Thursday a.m. stuff

Cole Hamels is pretty good.

Also pretty good is Mike Hindman's Q&A with Jon Daniels this morning at the DMN Rangers blog...too much good stuff to try to excerpt, so be sure to read the whole thing...

I'm not sure if the person doing the headlines at the DMN yesterday isn't familiar with baseball, or just has football on the brain right now, but I found this story on the new coaches to have a weird headline:

Texas Rangers hire two assistant coaches

Assistant coaches?

Jeff Wilson says the new coaches -- Jackie Moore and Dave Anderson -- are expected to help improve the team's defense.

Tony Massarotti mentions in his blog at the Boston Examiner site that the Red Sox that the BoSox tried to trade for Gerald Laird last offseason, and continue to be in the market for a catcher.

I like this

From Hindman’s interview, JD says:

We’ve got some targets in that area [meaning Greinke, Cain, Nolasco, etc.] but those guys don’t come available too often. Can we make a deal without including one of those guys? Don’t know. Depends on the club and who they’re interested in, but I have a hard time imagining that we would trade any of [Feliz, Holland, Main or Perez].

Yeah, lots of good stuff in there

Don’t know how much is posturing, but I liked this too

MJH: If a rival GM called you up today and offered you a promising young starting pitcher who has already gotten his feet wet in the big leagues for your top lefty prospect Derek Holland and a young power reliever like Warner Madrigal, would you be tempted to pounce on that offer and if so, why?

JD: No. I don’t think so. That’s not where we are right now. We’re pretty committed to our own guys and the way we are going about developing them.

by thedudeabides on Oct 23, 2008 9:52 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

to say nothing of this

MJH: Put differently and more directly, are you going to be more reluctant in the future to trade the prospects that YOUR system has drafted and developed for someone else’s prospects or young big leaguers in the future because of past deals like the Chris Young and John Danks trades?

JD: Yes. We’ve made some evaluations in the past that we’d approach differently now. I think that it’s less likely now that, on a close call, we’d make a judgment that someone else’s young pitcher is better developed or prepared than our own young pitcher. That’s not hard and fast — there are always exceptions and we’re open to improving any way we can. But I know what you’re getting at. It energizes the entire system to see a Matt Harrison or an Eric Hurley contributing for the Texas Rangers and there’s value in that. We’re working hard to get to a point where it means something special to be a pitcher who came up in the Texas Rangers system and contributed to winning baseball in Arlington.

by thedudeabides on Oct 23, 2008 9:53 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't see how Harrison and Hurley are similar

Harrison came over and spent less than a full season in our minor league system. Hurley was drafted by us.

Nolasco was pretty terrific in 2008

and he got better as the year went on.

In the last two months of the season, he posted 77.2 IP, 61 H, 8 BB, 82 K, 0.89 WHIP, and a 2.78 ERA. (5-1 record). That is a K/BB ratio of over 10.

He was pretty solid in 2008, and he got significantly better as the year went on.

Not exactly.

If you disagree with mjh, he takes his ball and goes home because he feels nobody appreciates all the hard work he puts into an article.

He is a good writer and knows Ranger minor league baseball very well (nobody screamed louder when JDanks was traded for Vagisil McCarthy) but his weakness is in not allowing for other opinions that disagree with his…especially when he’s wrong.

If mjh ever conquers that weakness, he could become one the DMN’s shining lights given how low that bar presently sits.

Or it could be...

…that, like Chan Ho Park, he didn’t have any health problems until he came to the Rangers and his new pitching coach starting monkeying with him.

Or it could be that the ChiSox knew all along that McCarthy was 15 seconds from breaking down, and thus were going to try to unload him on anyone that winter, and were just fortunate to find the one team that was willing to take him.

I find the former more likely, personally.

Japanese Team Pursuing Nelson Cruz?
By Tim Dierkes [October 23 at 10:10am CST]

Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker passes along a Sanspo.com story. Apparently the Hanshin Tigers plan to aggressively pursue Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz this winter. Cruz had an incredible 2008, both in Triple A and a month with the Rangers. It figures that they’ll pencil him in as next year’s starting right fielder rather than sell/trade him to Japan. A year ago, Cruz could’ve been had for little.

My crazy imagination

Some people here may have already heard about Junichi Tazawa, a very highly touted Japanese pitcher who is yet to be drafted by an NPB team and is telling them to not draft him so he can shop himself to MLB teams as a free agent.
Now, could we reach some sort of Incaviglia-esque agreement with the Tigers where they draft and sell Tazawa to us for Nelly? I know it would be frowned upon by both leagues but are I don’t know if there’re any rules that prevent that from happening.
And yes, I know it sounds crazy.

IIRC

1 > players have to agree to a league to league trade (dbacks did it earlier this year trading a 1b for an indy league pitcher)
2 > no way that nelson cruz agrees to that
3 > whoever signs the guy may get shunned by future japanese players. this is a situation where having cogburn (pacific rim scouting director?) would be helpful maybe? id def see what someone like aki thought about it

it just would have to be agreed upon by both players i think

but i am pretty sure there MIGHT also be a problem where he would have to be posted and such

Basically...

The rumored package of Hanson, Schafer, plus one of Johnson/Escobar is utterly ridiculous and well out of line with what we’ve seen pitchers traded for the past couple of years…

Says if that’s what the Padres are expecting in return, even considering recent returns for comparable pitchers and the perceived injury risk, Jake Peavy will stay in San Diego.

by N41D on Oct 23, 2008 2:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's good to hear

That means we can offer a lesser deal and probably still be ahead of everyone else.

Obviously it doesn’t mean we’d get him but it’s worth a try.

by Coolbean04 on Oct 23, 2008 2:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

ESPN is the gay anyways.

He analyzes some of the previous trades made for pitching and then has this to say about what the Padres can expect.

The team acquiring Peavy would get something similar to what Arizona got financially in Haren — three years of control at below-market prices — but they’re not getting the same pitcher on the field. Peavy missed time this year with elbow trouble after notching a career high in innings in 2007. When he did pitch, his strikeout rate was down, his walk rate was up, and his home run rate was back up after being exceptionally low in 2007. His velocity was about normal, sitting 92-93 mph on the four-seamer, a few miles per hour below that on the two-seamer, but his slider didn’t have the same bite. He uses the slider often, which isn’t good for the elbow, and without that as a primary weapon, he’s not going to be as effective.

Peavy has also benefitted tremendously from his home environment. Petco Park is one of the toughest places in baseball to hit a home run, good news for pitchers like Peavy who don’t keep the ball on the ground. In fact, Peavy has allowed far more home runs (81) in his career on the road than he has at home (47), despite throwing 95 more innings at home. And that’s before we consider the soft competition that he’s faced, between the National League and the weak offenses in the NL West.

All of this puts speculation, like that reported by Joel Sherman of the New York Post on Wednesday, into some perspective:

The executives spoken to say they anticipate a Braves package being built around pitcher Tommy Hanson and outfielder Jordan Schafer, who both peaked at Double-A last year, plus a middle infielder, either shortstop Yunel Escobar or second baseman Kelly Johnson.

That package includes Atlanta’s top pitching prospect (Hanson), an established big-league middle infielder (Escobar or Johnson), and another of Atlanta’s top five prospects (Schafer). It’s completely out of line with the prices paid for other top-flight starters in the past two years, including the most directly comparable deal in Haren, in which the A’s took bulk prospects over established major-league players. And that’s before we consider the questions about Peavy’s elbow.

If San Diego is looking for that much big-league and prospect value in return for Peavy, odds are he’ll still be a Padre at Christmas. The Padres have an opportunity to move quickly here as the lone seller before free agency brings a flood of high-end pitching, as Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe, Ryan Dempster and Oliver Perez will all be available without requiring teams to give up any prospects at all. If the take from Sherman’s sources on the asking price is accurate, the Padres will have to lower their demands to get a deal done — and Padres fans should lower their expectations as well.

re:

And that’s before we consider the questions about Peavy’s elbow.

That right there is the reason I don’t want us anywhere near Peavy this off season. The guy’s health issues scare the jeebus right out of me.

If they’re giving him away, then that’s fine. I’ll assume some health risk. To paraphrase an oft-used quote from the Wire: “I’ll take any mother f——-ers ace starter if they’re giving him away.”

But no way am I selling off any important part of our future to get him. No way, Jose.

More on Peavy from KLaw chat
Ross (CA): Yesterday Callis said he would prefer Cain over Peavy. How do you feel about that, and could you explain why?

SportsNation Keith Law: I’d agree with Jim. Peavy’s elbow problem + all those sliders are a concern. The drop in his peripherals this year is a big concern. And while he’s signed and therefore under control, the deal ain’t cheap. Cain hasn’t had any injury issues, has three years of control left (without a lot of wins, which will hold down his arb awards somewhat), and projects to improve. He’s not perfect – control is maybe a 45, and his ballpark is almost as friendly as PETCO – but that’s what I meant by taking a shot on a young arm.

How should we read in to this?
MJH: Is Davis at first, Metcalf at third and Hank at DH an option for opening day, 2009? Or Hank at first, Davis at third and someone else at DH more likely?

JD: We’ve whiteboarded both scenarios. We certainly want to upgrade our defense, so you can read into that what you want.

I almost feel like there has to be a better 3B/SS scenario out there somewhere.

Here are the +/- numbers at short among free agents with a positive number. (Age in parenthesis.)

Cesar Izturis: +19, +14 over three years (29)
Omar Vizquel: +9, +36 over three years (42)
Craig Counsel: +6, +24 over three years (38)
Nomar Garciaparra: +4, +5 over three years (35)
Willie Bloomquist: +2, +5 over three years (31)
Orlando Cabrera: +1, -9 over three years (34)
Rafael Furcal: 0, +10 over three years (31)

Adam Everett was a +41 two years ago at the end of a run of several straight historically great years, but he was a -1 this year. He’s 32, but another player I’d be interested in.

Also, I listed Nomar but there’s no way he can stay healthy enough at short anymore.

I have a soft spot for Vizquel. If he came really cheap (and MY moved), I’d actually be fine with having him for a year or two.

I like Wilson better, but Izturis is a free agent. I think it’d be a good idea to explore both.

Although I didn't realize until I looked it up that

Izturis is a switch hitter and hits much better against lefties which could help the lineup out.

klaw stuff
Mike A. (RAB): Hey Keith, would you rather pay through the nose for Peavy, or give up a lesser package for a guy like Scott Olsen?

Keith Law: I’d probably prefer to target the younger guy with upside, although Olsen’s makeup issues make him less than an ideal target.
Philip, College Station TX: KLaw I know Rangers questions aren’t in style this time of year but… HOW have the rays gotten this far so fast? The Rangers have been terrible for as long as i can remember? Are they ever winners with John Daniels or for that matter Tom Hicks?

Keith Law: The Rays focused on run prevention. For years the Rangers focused on developing hitters and tried to solve their run-prevention problems through free agent pitchers. Now the Rangers are focused on building it from within – there’s a huge wave of pitchers coming and a few plus defenders among their top hitting prospects, like Andrus and Borbon. In other words, it looks good.
J. P (Toronto): Where would Bryce Harper go if he was eligible for next year draft?

 Keith Law: #1 overall.

kid is 16. SIXTEEN!

Ryan (DC): Really… Bryce Harper would be drafted over Strasburg?

Keith Law: I’m saying I would take him over Strasburg. 16-year-old catcher with ++ arm, polished bat, and power? His skill set and polish are a more scarce package than a potential #1 starter.
Brett (Mount Prospect, IL): Madison Bumgarner or Jarrod Parker?

 Keith Law: Parker

damn. first time ive seen this before. but IIRC he thinks alderson > bumgardner as well
