WRONG!
Best draft in MLB!
On the strength of 1b Justin Smoak’s (1st Rd.) surprising slide to Texas in the first round, the Rangers willingness to spend the money to keep LHP Robbie Ross (2d Rd.) away from his commitment to the University of Kentucky, and exceptional debuts from LHP Tim Murphy (3rd Rd.) and RHP Joe Wieland (4th Rd.), and 1b Clark Murphy (5th Rd.), the industry’s leading trade publication ranked the Rangers draft class the best in baseball.
Woo-Hoo!

I loved the comment in that thread
about how stupid JD was to overpay for Smoak/Ross/Beavan/Borbon/Holland, sign Bradley, and trade for Josh.
I know the odds of it being a hose are probably huge, but I like to think it’s an honest to god post about someone being pissed off that those guys are (or were, potentially, in Bradley’s case) in the organization.
Overpaid?
It looks to me like the sTRangers paid just about where these guys are performing – and, where they’d performed leading up to the draft. Smoak, the 2nd best power bat in the draft falls to the sTRangers at 11 gets paid like the #4 or #5 pick… sounds about right to me.
Same for the other guys. The team just paid for value and will get their money’s worth in the long Haul…

Misrepresentation on my part
I think the remark was about breaking slot, rather than overpaying, per se.
Still, hilarious in either its failure to be genuinely funny or the overt brain-deadness of the post.
Nevermind
It’s pretty clear exactly who wrote the post in question.
i would have drafted friedrich or schlereth, both lefties who will be pitching stars for many, many years.
it is WAY more difficult to trade for pitching than hitting- the twins finally gave in and regret it more than anything- other teams took note and won’t let the same thing happen to them. NO ONE wants to trade the next garza for a hitter, that’s why you DRAFT PITCHING IN THE FIRST ROUND, especially when you have one of the worst pitching staffs of all time and already have a potent enough offense.
Might as well type in his IP address.
Good god

I think I’ll just quit reading withleather. So tired of the same shtick. Wasn’t good to begin with.
Nothing pithy here. Please move long.
Yes
If only because I seem to become more obsessed with everything Rangers related with each year that passes.

Personally
I find this World Series far, far more interesting than the Red Sox / Rockies (yawn). I think the Red Sox may be one of the most boring teams in baseball to watch – they really aren’t that different from the Moneyball A’s, except with actual good players.
There is this mentality in the national media that the fans only care about the Red Sox, Yankees, and Cubs because those are the only teams those people know well.

A sports comedy blog that’s never been funny?
Yah, I quit reading it a long time ago and have never once regretted it. I highly recommend it.

A little Short of the Mark...
Josh was the sTRangers’ player of the year, but, it was just released that he’s the AL’s Player of the Year, too.
Way to go, Josh!

Are things different now?
I just read about how Uncle Milt showed up at Josh’s LA book signing and said he wanted to remain a Ranger. We’ve heard about how players showed up at a press conference Josh did earlier this year, Ian asking him to go to lunch, etc. Then contrast that with MJH’s recount of how disfunctional the organization was a few years ago.
Could there be there be something beyond the numbers? Could the orginization be gelling?
Since we’re supposed to talk amongst ourselves . . . .

I wonder if Meno
had heard some of these “dysfunctional” stories before he started opining that Buck was making a power play on Fuson.
I don't think it was any real secret
Which is why it made me so nuts when a few folks derided those suggestions as a “conspiracy theory”.

Galloway...
I usually don’t read Galloway’s stuff, but today I did. In his article, he refers to Bill James “Young Talent Inventory” (apparently a ranking of MLB players under 30). Galloway talks about how there are no Rangers in James’ top 25. Does anyone know more about these rankings or why guys like Kinsler and Hamilton would be left out?
http://www.star-telegram.com/sports/columnists/randy_galloway//index.html
I'm gonna guess...
…that James is based on the one of the coasts and doesn’t even realize there’s a middle in this country.
Hamilton would be Top 5 in any valid list and Kinsler would certainly be in the Top 25… wouldn’t ya think?

Well
Bill James knows that the Royals exist. He has Joakim Soria above Evan Longoria. And apparently the Royals have the 5th most under 30 talent of any organization.

I think we can all agree now that Bill James has jumped the shark…
To achieve his "Young Talent Inventory," James first eliminated from the list all players who were 29 years old in 2007 or older, to give a definition to "young talent." Then he used two widely used statistics—"runs created" for position players and "runs allowed" for pitchers—as the basis for comparison. However, James made several adjustments and then took into account how many years the player has left before he is 33 years old.

Basically both are excluded because of how his metric is determined. No big deal, bith shold be on there next year with a good chance of Davis as well.
