One driveby post for the night.

Rosanne Barr has company. Tied now for the most miserable rendition of the national anthem ever heard.

Carl Lewis-esque

Patti LaBelle sucks, always has sucked, and always will suck. Whoever decided to let her butcher the anthem should be kicked in the taint.

American Dad is worse

At least family guy has Stewie, who at times can make up for the rest of the show. But overall, I agree Family Guy is a beating.

He’s also had 456 IP in the bigs and all his periphrial stats suck, even in what has been his career season. What I infer from that is, he is actually not that good – so I’ll just agree to disagree here.

holy cow

I hadn’t heard the name ‘Charlie Kerfeld’ in quite some time. I remember him from the mid-80’s Astros. I was living in Tucson back then and at that time the Tucson Toros were the AAA team of the Astros. I actually have Kerfeld’s autograph on a number of baseball cards. Probably not worth much. The guy had one pretty good year (1986, the same year Mike Scott helped win the NL West by throwing a no-hitter against the Giants. He then went on to win 2 games against the Mets in the NLCS, and finally winning the Cy Young).

What happened to Glenn Davis was pretty sad.

Here.

After Scott threw his no-hitter, a reporter asked Mets catcher Gary Carter what he thought about Scott. Carter responded, “It’s the consensus around the league that Mike Scott cheats.”

Years later, Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden said, “Actually, we knew that Scott was scuffing the ball, but the umpires were letting him get away with it. And that made him impossible to hit.”

More.

by Adam J. Morris on Oct 26, 2008 10:24 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

so

you have a problem with scuffing the ball.

But not with steroids? Or do I misunderstand your ambivalence to steroids?

Just curious. I don’t have any problem with scuffing. But if you get caught you should expect to pay the consequences.

by Hubris on Oct 26, 2008 10:26 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   1 recs

Both are illegal

And people do both anyway.

For some reason, scuffing the ball is seemed to be okay if you don’t get caught, while using PEDs is something that should get you banned for life.

by Adam J. Morris on Oct 26, 2008 10:31 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This doesn't really confirm

that Scott was scuffing the ball. It quotes two highly biased sources (two Mets players) saying that he did scuff the ball. It also quotes several (also highly biased sources) saying he didn’t scuff the ball (or not saying anything).

Now I want to know if he was scuffing. It’s a pretty amazing feat to not get caught considering he was checked a number of times, if memory serves.

by Hubris on Oct 26, 2008 10:31 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Some of the best pitchers

were scuffers, or used lube on the ball. There are a lot of guys who swear that Maddux doctors balls.

I say more power to em. In baseball, if you ain’t cheatin, you ain’t tryin hard enough to win, and its only cheatin if you get caught.

You know, in some way the Phillies clobbering the Rays like this should give us hope

Because we’re a much similar team to the Phils than the Rays. We’re a big offensive team in a bandbox ballpark – this give you an idea of what we could do with just a decent rotation and a good bullpen like the Phils.
