ESPN splitting up Miller, Morgan?
There's a report in the New York Daily News that after 19 years of being paired on the ESPN Sunday Night broadcast, Jon Miller and Joe Morgan are going to be split up.
Getting Morgan -- who, the report suggests, doesn't have the greatest of relationships with Miller and isn't popular with his ESPN co-workers -- off the high-profile Sunday night game would be a good thing, but the article suggests that he'd be replaced with Rick Sutcliffe, who isn't really an upgrade.

Couple of thoughts
Who would actually be a good replacement for Joe Morgan, satisfying both fans of a player popularity and analyst/observer interests in the game?
Also, I can’t wait to get the FJM take. Is it fact, or a rumor?

I've heard Ripken smack down baseball truisms many, many times.
I’ve heard him say crap like “experience is overrated” and “strikeouts are just another out” and other such things.
In other words: DO WANT!

Who cares?
I mean, why should I, as a baseball fan, care whether or not ESPN has good national announcers or not.
I can see why I would care about whether the Rangers’ local broadcasts have good announcers, since good announcers mean good ratings and since good ratings means more revenues, and more revenues means more money that can be spent on the team, and that will (generally speaking) mean a better product and more wins.
But whether or not the national audience like Joe Morgan or not…why should I give a rat’s ass?

Well, I care...
…because I watch the Sunday night broadcast, which makes who is doing it something that has some meaning to me.

So you don't really care
Because I know that you really dislike Morgan but you watch anyway.

I don't like Joe Buck and Tim McCarver...
…but I watch the World Series.
That means I don’t care if they are replaced?
I’m confused by what your point is.

Are there any
nationally known color guys who would appeal to a ‘slide rule’ fan? I can’t think of one. Maybe someone else can.
Purely from an aesthetic POV I like Joe Morgan. If a guy can be found with a good broadcasting voice and was someone who would appeal to a ‘slide rule’ fan…that would be great.

There are a few I'm just happy with.
But plugging someone like Rob Neyer in addition to someone like Ripken would be great.

Neyer
Have you heard him speak?

Does he sound like
Tim Kurkjian? For some reason I always imagined him sounding that way.

It's seemed to me for a while that Jon Miller doesn't actually like Joe.
He seems to mock him very subtley on broadcasts pretty often, and I’ve seen him say things in interviews that just kind’ve hint at “I don’t really like this man.”
That said, I think Sutcliffe is actually worse than Joe Morgan. FJM is hilarious and all, and Morgan is senile, but, sad as it is, there is worse out there.

I really like Jon Miller...
It’s Morgan they should replace. With Harold Reynolds. Of course I’m sure he won’t be back at ESPN anytime soon.

Ahh...
for some reason when I first read that I saw Miller being replaced rather than Morgan.
Oh well, Sutcliffe is just as bad as Morgan.

Sutcliffe may be worse than Morgan
The substance of what Morgan is saying may be ridiculous, but at least he has a decent broadcast voice. Sutcliffe, regardless of the substance, sounds like a doofus.

replacements for Morgan
I like listening to Dave ‘Soup’ Campbell on the radio. Much like Morgan I don’t think he will appeal to ‘slide rule’ fans. But I’m only talking about having someone who is not offensive to the ear. I think Sutcliffe is a disasterous choice from an aesthetic POV. Of course I think Joe Buck is also awful yet he continues to be given FOX’s premium events.
I can’t think of any nationally known color guy who would appeal to a ‘slide rule’ fan.
I love listening to Jon Miller and I hope someday to hear him calling the World Series. Oh for the days when Vin Scully and/or Al Michaels called the World Series.

From what I've heard, Miller/Morgan might be the worst broadcast combo in baseball
Well, aside from the clowns that do the Angel broadcasts here in socal that is.
But anyway, news that they’re going to split those two up can be nothing but good. Joe is of course an idiot, and Jon Miller puts me to sleep – I don’t get to watch too many games on ESPN, but when I do I always dread listening to the combo of Miller/Morgan. I think their harder to take than Buck/McCarver, myself – Joe Buck may not know anything about baseball, but at least he does a decent play-by-play when he’s not fueling McCarver’s old grumpy fartedness.

Good!!
I think Jon Miller is the best in the business, but Joe Morgan is an idiot!!
I swear everytime I watch the broadcast, there will be 3 or 4 times that I have to cuss out Morgan because of something he says. Makes my wife hate watching baseball with me because I can’t get over it.
I would also like to see Harold Reynolds………..but I don’t see that happening!! Damn you Reynolds for being handsy!!
i like baseball too
