BTB on FIP+ for the A.L. West

BTB has a post up that looks at the FIP+ of each A.L. West team.  What jumps out at you about the Rangers is that Kevin Millwood was better last year (in terms of FIP+) than you would probably expect, and Harrison, Hurley, Feldman, and Padilla were worse.

One caveat here...I think that the three year park factors that are being applied understate the hitter-friendly nature of TBIA (mainly, I think there was a bit of an aberration the previous couple of years that makes TBIA look more neutral than it really is), so I think the park-adjusted numbers may not be quite so bad as they look here.

The numbers have been fairly consistent

What aberration do you see that makes RBiA more hitter friendly than the numbers say?

Probably the fact that

The 2.53 home runs hit per game at the RBiA in 2008 was tied with the Rogers Centre (Toronto) for the fourth highest rate in the AL.

Top 5 AL ballparks in HRPG in 2008:

US Cellular (CHW): 2.68
Camden Yards (BAL): 2.56
Comerica Park (DET): 2.54
RBiA (TEX): 2.53
Rogers Centre (TOR): 2.53

To give you an idea of how big a number that is, 6th is Yankee Stadium at an even 2.00, and 7th is Tampa Bay’s Trop at 1.89. Furthermore, there’s only one park in the NL with a HRPG rate higher than the RBiA’s 2.53 – the Great American Ballpark in Cincy (2.59) – so that would tie us for the 5th highest HR rate in the majors.

So yeah, just based on how much the ball flies out of the yard I’d say the RBiA is pretty hitter-friendly.

Wait a minute, I F'd that up

The Rogres Centre has 1.53 HRPG, not 2.53. So forget tied, the RBiA is all alone in 4th place in the AL and 5th in the majors overall.

teams that hit a lot of homeruns will skew their parks' totals, though

you HAVE to compare HRs at home to HRs on the road. when your lineup has as much power as the Ranger’s does, they’re going to hit HRs no matter what park they play in.

He wasn't as bad as his surface numbers would indicate...

…but he wasn’t as good as his FIP would indicate either. Also, Mendoza with a 91 FIP+? WTF?

by jcir454 on Oct 27, 2008 11:39 AM CDT up reply actions

He's a solid LAIE, though.

Maybe even a LAIE+.

I guess I’m just tired of people talking like we should dump Millwood off on anyone willing to take his salary to make room for the Padzillas and FFACTH’s of the world.

He’s a LAIE on a team where we desperately need LAIE’s.

Yep, a team with all #3 starters would be a vast improvement over what the Rangers have had recently and a playoff contender with the 2008 run production.

aren't innings-eaters

supposed to eat innings?

170 innings a season isn’t a LAIE, much less a LAIE+.

What would you ask Nolan Ryan: "... as a former pitcher, what would you think about having a useless lug standing out there behind you."

Then I'd tell him that useless lug’s name is Michael Young. -- lonestarJesus

Who was #1 in IP for the Rangers?

It was Padilla at 171.0, so if we could have a team full of 170 IP dudes, it would be an improvement.

Sigh.

Your shtick is boring me at this point.

We get it. You hate everything and everyone sucks.

It's not schtick

You made a gross error and I corrected it.

Kevin Millwood is not an innings eater.

Park Factors

I wish more work would be done in this are to fully understand park effects. My gut tells me that Arlington is hitter-friendly — but I hate it when people just assume it is and I have not seen a good explanation for the neutral numbers of the last 3 seasons on the B-Ref site. Adam, any theories about the nature of the aberration?

i'm really curious as to the B-Ref numbers, too

if you go look at ESPN’s park factors, you’ll see a different story (they only have one-year factors, but you can easily see a trend, or even get technical and average them yourself). and ESPN just takes the simple, mostly-correct route: (HRs hit and allowed at home)/(HRs hit and allowed on the road). ideally you’d correct for innings or plate appearances, but, yeah.

A request

For people that are newbies when it comes to new acronym-ized stats, it would be really helpful and informative if front-page (and diary) posters gave quick parenthetical explanations of the acronyms they use. Or at least link to their descriptions so we don’t have to go hunt down what the hell you’re talking about. :)

We did this a while back

and also included some LSB-specific references. I agree that this should really be linked on the front page somewhere.

If the posters...

…take a couple extra seconds and link to the individual explanations every time, then a random wanderer onto this blog won’t have to scramble to find out what the heck is being discussed. Guaranteed to increase viewership and general stat understanding and engagement.

You should be so lucky!

I know you’re opposed to people having fun on here, Debbie Downer always seems to show up when people are having a good time to try and piss on their parade. The problem as per usual is that you’re pissing downdraft of the wind…so go dry your emaciated ass off!

What’s it like to be the Amy Winehouse of LSB? Now go do some more drugs so that you can deal with your sad reality!!!

I actually take back what I said last night. Truely.

If something doesn’t have to be said, don’t say it. This is something I take issue with… none more frequently than with lonestarJon and his unnecessary and usually unfunny pictures.

But, calling me Amy Winehouse is pretty lazy. I have better work ethic and actually contribute something other than the obvious.

If you get that.

Amy Whine House you are truly a legend in your own...

stoned out mind. You take issue with a lot of things, noone bitches on here more than you that’s for sure. So what you’re saying is that you should be the arbiter of what should and should not be said or what pictures should be posted on here? Should we all start sending our pics and posts to you first for approval before we post them? You are such a joke. Has it ever occured to you that maybe some of the pics or things that you say may not meet the approval of some of us? Like when you mention for the 1000th time that you just took a dump or smoked a bowl or had a sandwich. None of that was funny the first time and it sure as hell isn’t the 1000th time.
It’s about tolerance, of which you have none of. If we can put up with your non-stop whining and bitching they maybe you can put up with a pic that LSJ posts that doesn’t meet your high standards, or that Spurdynasty who I think does an amazing job..gets “bullshit recs”, or that 80% of all GDT pics are ‘just terrible". or that Rodney is a wuss like me. Well this wuss could kick your ass in record time and then I’d rub your soiled panties in your obnoxious face so don’t get too cocky. You’d look like olive oil standing next to me…trust me I’d make quick work of you you whiney mamby pamby drug addicted dweeb.

Yes, I should be a moderator.

And, I haven’t mentioned anything about weed, sandwiches or shits in months… but, keep trotting that out there if it makes you feel more muscular.
