I think Joe Buck is a fine play-by-play announcer

For football games.

But if I where the CEO of FOX, he would not ever, on any occasion be allowed in a baseball broadcast booth, much less the world series. He seems to know less about the sport than Tim MacMahon.

I vote for a 5.

Joe Buck, Tim McCarver, Joe Morgan ... hmmm...

Just doesn’t look like Fox has much to offer in the way of quality MLB Game Calling.

Buck isn’t bad – he just isn’t his dad. His dad would rate about a 42.8 on your scale. His dad always offered historical insights into what was going on along with the play-by-play. Joe just calls what he sees and banters with whomever is in the booth with him. Maybe if they’d put Bob Uecker in the booth with him? Hmmm…

Tim McCarver is so far up Derek Jeter’s butt (which really becomes apparent when he calls YankMe games) he’ll never see the light of day again.

Joe Morgan is just boring. He has knowledge, but his delivery really stinks.

Some didn't, but I also liked...

Joe Garagiola… his humor wasn’t obnoxious or contrived and he had a good knowledge of everyone involved in the sport.

I’d listen to Vin Scully, too. He always sounded like he enjoyed being at the game.

Buck doesn’t bother me.

McCarver is a total moron. He lost me forever during the allstar game when he said he thought Manny Ramirez hit better low and away than the onscreen graphic indicated, and when pressed by Buck, McCarver said flatly that the statistics were incorrect. Yikes.

Joe Morgan is an idiot – we all know that, but mercifully he doesn’t really say much during games. He just kind of sits there like a sound void. And when he talks I totally agree that he is really dull.

None of them are as bad as Chris Berman, my personal most hated broadcaster. Man, does Berman suck in every facet. He is not only one of the least knowledgeable people, but he simply relies on his used up catchphrases to gloss over the fact that he has no idea what he is talking about, and loves to inject pointless, confusing, and sometimes offensive commentary.

my vote is for bob uecker

"Hey, I think it's easy for guys to hit .300 and stay in the big leagues. Hit .200 and try to stick around as long as I did; I think it's a much greater accomplishment. That's hard."-- Bob Uecker

I hear a lot of complaining about Buck

but I like him pretty well. At least he doesn’t get into the clownshoes routines that Lewin typically does.

What would you ask Nolan Ryan: "... as a former pitcher, what would you think about having a useless lug standing out there behind you."

Then I'd tell him that useless lug’s name is Michael Young. -- lonestarJesus

by tricer on Oct 28, 2008 11:09 AM CDT reply actions

Absolutely.

I think its interesting how wide the spread is on the poll results. I guess I’d have to call the consensus a 7 on Buck, and I doubt that Lewin would do that well.

One big difference

No one is asking Lewin to call the World Series.

by Hubris on Oct 29, 2008 12:07 PM CDT up reply actions

That's true

But they do ask him to do 150+ Rangers games a year which is much worse IMO.

Went with 2

Can’t stand him. I was extra harsh considering who his father is and that he basically admits he doesn’t watch games unless he’s calling them.

Buck doesn't bother

me all that much. I gave him a 7. The person that really bothers me to the point that I want to stab ice picks into my eardrums is McCarver.

Same here

Buck is fine so long as he isn’t being preachy. McCarver is by far the worst announcer in baseball – I don’t much like Joe Morgan, but I prefer him any day to Tim McCarver.

I voted 1

mainly because he seems to be more into himself than the game…

also because he is incredibly quick to jump out and criticize people

I thought he deserved bonus points last night

for calling out the umpiring. There aren’t many PxPs out there anymore who dare take on the league.

Me too

I don’t like Joe but I don’t have any hatred for him. He’s a 5 and that’s totally insufficient for baseball playoffs. Personally, I liked Buck Martinez and Harold Reynolds during the playoffs.

Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

i lost what little respect i had for buck...

after listening to this interview on the herd:

http://awfulannouncing.blogspot.com/2008/07/joe-buck-admits-he-rarely-watches.html

this just pisses me off to no end as someone who wants to get into the business hearing how he takes for granted the great lifestyle he has and has pretty much been handed everything he has b/c of his dad

by studcrackers on Oct 28, 2008 1:44 PM CDT reply actions

I give him about a 4 in baseball.

And maybe about as high as a 7 in football. He use to be better in baseball, though he was never great.

Also: I think his father was overrated.

From Wikipedia

I didn’t realize he’s only 39 years old. When he started broadcasing FOX football games in 1994, he was 25. There’s no way he would have gotten that gig without his famous last name.

He is good for football only

He tries to make the game seamless, and well that makes sense for football because it fits well with the way that football is played by downs, but I feel like he really saps the energy out of baseball games. It’s almost as if he builds no tension whatsoever, and instead just sort of talks out the game. I’ve noticed that Vin Scully does that, but he does it well. Joe just really takes energy out of the game.

Buck would be okay if he were doing regular games. But this is the playoffs and World Series. If your ‘A’ team is Joe Buck and Tim McCarver then you simply aren’t trying very hard.

I live in L.A. and I enjoy listening to Vin Scully (like any normal human being). Charile Steiner is also good. I’d rather hear either of them call the World Series than Joe Buck.

FWIW, I don’t think Joe rates more than a 6 for football either. I find his style to be ‘droning’. He’s almost monotone in his delivery. He rarely displays any passion or excitement for what he is covering. Contrast that with a really great play-by-play guy like Al Michaels.

I like Buck just fine

Admittedly, I don’t watch much baseball on Fox anymore (I have seen about 1 inning of the WS) but he seems ok to me as a PBP guy. Now, he also seems like a giant douchenozzle but if the question is strictly limited to his job then I go with a 9.
