OT: Tuesday Night Music

With their being no World Series game tonight, and a lot of baseball news kind of stagnant until the offseason actually begins, I figured it was a good time for an off topic post.

Any recommendations for some recent albums?  Personally, I've been listening to the new Ryan Adams & The Cardinals album Cardinology a lot, and think it might not only be my favorite album of the year, but also the best thing Adams has ever done, top to bottom.

How about upcoming concerts?  I'm seeing R.E.M. this weekend, with Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs, Mars Volta and a few other bands supporting.  I'm really excited, as R.E.M.'s one band that I've wanted to see for years, but it's just never happened, before now.

And on one final note, something that I think a lot of you out there might dig, MTV is in the process of putting up it's entire video catalog at mtvmusic.com.  Might as well put it somewhere since they don't play them on TV anymore, but even in it's beginning stages where a lot of shit is missing, there is just a TON of music there.

Not like their early stuff, but there’s some gems on there (Crawl, I Want You, Cold Desert).

It was the crumbiest live performance I’ve ever seen. I hate them now.

Orlando, same tour.

Maybe they were just awful that night, but my god were they awful. Everything so soaked in shitty reverb and noise that no one in my party could tell one from song from another. They all just sounded like ambiguous shitty wall of noiseness. I was pissed and bored, cause it’s boring when you can’t tell what songs are being played. Only show I’ve ever left early.

Some of the songs, like Every Valley is Not A Lake and Welcome to the Occupation are excellent. But, some of them (Avalanche in B, I’m looking at you) can be tough to get through because of the lead singer’s falsetto.

My 2008 Favorites

Which haven’t been discussed here yet that I could see, in no particular order, but I’ll bold my top choices (only 2008 releases):

Lightspeed Champion – Falling off the Lavender Bridge
The Walkmen – You & Me
British Sea Power – Do You Like Rock Music?
MGMT – Oracular Spectacular
Sigur Ros – [long title in Icelandic that is impossible to type on my keyboard]
Wolf Parade – At Mount Zoomer
French Kicks – Swimming
Los Campesinos! – Hold on Now, Youngster…
The Last Shadow Puppets – The Age of Understatement
Cut/Copy – In Ghost Colours
Fleet Foxes – Fleet Foxes
M83 – Saturdays = Youth
Of Montreal – Skeletal Lamping
Islands – In Arm’s Way
Headlights – Some Racing, Some Stopping
Bloc Party – Intimacy
Portishead – Third
The Raconteurs – Consolores of the Lonely
The Cool Kids – At the Bake Sale
Girl Talk – Feed the Animals (it’s free!)
The Black Keys – Attack & Release

by FuturePants on Oct 29, 2008 9:17 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Excellent choices

Not sure on Girl Talk though, I find that particular album kind of exhausting to listen to. Can we just stick to a melody for a minute?

I’m glad someone else is a Lightspeed Champion enthusiast. I really like their music videos and would go as the singer for Halloween if anyone in the world might recognize me.

Good list...

I have been totally enjoying Do You Like Rock Music? and You & Me of late.

I think At Mount Zoomer is pretty underrated as well.

Also, I can’t wait for MGMT to put out a new album if only because I’ve played Oracular Spectacular so much in my car that the disc no longer works. Plus, I’m a sucker for follow-ups.

I enjoy almost all of those immensley

…except BSP. Man, they are too generic for me.

by Apes and Androids on Oct 29, 2008 12:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

BSP

I think their first album, The Decline of British Sea Power was a special rock album; very very good. Do You Like Rock Music? is good, just not as good as Decline. I can see why you can say that Decline is a little generic; it doesn’t bust down a lot of walls, but as far as bands doing rock music right now, they do it very well. And even if first blush is a little generic, I think Decline is an excellent album.

It sort of reminds me of Okkervil River’s from last year, The Stage Names. First couple of listens it seemed a little thin to me, but the more I listened the more that album impressed me. Same with DYLRM?

by FuturePants on Oct 29, 2008 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well...

and also, with Okkervil River, it was just impossible for them to follow up Black Sheep Boy with something as amazing. I would say BSB is one of the best albums of this decade.

So, I didn’t even know Portishead was coming out with a new album until I saw it in Hastings. It’s been forever since I even thought about that band.
