OT -- Some pics from Galveston during Ike
As I've mentioned, my in-laws live in Galveston. They were there during the hurricane and took some pictures, which I thought were pretty interesting. So I figured I'd share...you can see some after the jump...
This was the Strand in Galveston, before Ike even hit. The flooding was from the storm surge in advance of the hurricane.
Same thing...
Flooding on the Strand in the midst of the storm.
The next day.

Issac's Storm
Anybody else read that book? The final picture is basically how I visualized Issac’s Galveston. Surreal.
I read A Weekend in September and loved it
Have you read that one? Is the other one better?

Whoever built that house in that last picture
I want them to build mine
It's still standing......
but would you want to use it now?
I think...
Bolivar peninsula is three islands now. So commutes would be a bitch.
"I know you're a bit dense but no, it doesn't. Obviously lying isn't a problem for me."
I heard the lady that owned it on the phone....
interview on CNN I think. Anyway, she said they built it to withstand a Cat 5. Now she wished they hadn’t.
Galveston
I live in Galveston and went down for a couple of days to check on my place. I was lucky, didn’t get a drop of water because of a shopping center in front of me despite living a block from the ocean, but the rest of the island still looked like a complete warzone.
Seawall Blvd is looking relatively decent again. 90% of the restaurants and shops on that road that survived the storm are open for business again (albeit with reduced services of course… since there’s still no drinkable water/working phone lines etc…), but beyond the seawall the whole island is still trashed. Nearly every house had all their belongings lying outside. It’s really like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I really doubt the island will ever fully recover from this.
It’s a shame that because of the financial crisis the media has completely forgotten about Ike’s devastation.
Galveston
This makes me really regret having not been back since I was a child. We vacationed there several times when I was a kid, but i never went back in my adult life.

Personally I think it’s the third Morris brother. The one no one knows anything about.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
the one they keep chained up in the attic
and feed him buckets of fish heads?
