Marlins send 1B Jacobs to Royals for RHP Nunez

The Marlins were shopping Jacobs because he was due a big raise in arbitration. In exchange on Thursday, they got a right-handed pitcher who was 4-1 last year with a 2.98 ERA in 45 relief appearances.

Nunez has a 9-7 career record.

Jacobs is a career .262 hitter the Marlins acquired in a 2005 trade with the New York Mets. He hit 32 home runs and knocked in 93 runs last season, both career bests.

And thank Science for that.

I hear the Grink a whole whole lot, but I don’t want to trade Davis.

At all.

Pretty

Decent move for them (KC), I’d say.

No I get it.

I just don’t think Nunez is going to turn into Volquez.

It’s a decent move.

BABIP

His BABIP was extremely low without much changes in his groundball/line drive/flyball percentages. He was unlucky. I like this trade for the Royals. Nunez was lucky and Jacobs was not.

Have you seen his OBP?

Gregory (KC): Keith, why do you dislike the trade so much for Jacobs? We already have two set-up men in Mahay and Ramirez. We also don’t have any pop in our lineup, don’t you think that Guillen will get some better pitches due to the protection from Jacobs behind him rather than Gordon? Kila is still a year away and I hear Butler will probably get traded.

SportsNation Keith Law: (1:48 PM ET ) Because Jacobs is horrible. He’s a bad offensive player. I don’t believe in lineup protection anyway, but even if I did, his presence in the lineup is not going to scare me into pitching to Guillen. I’m thinking, “Hey, automatic out on deck, good times!”

I think

You and oc are misreading what I said. I said it’s a pretty decent move considering what they gave up. Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s just my first impression.

by brettgardner on Oct 30, 2008 12:54 PM CDT up reply actions

earlier Klaw comment
They gave up a decent relief arm AND they’re going to pay Jacobs arb salaries when Kile Ka’aihue (of whom I am no huge fan) is sitting right there and could provide equal or better production for free. To say nothing of Shealy or the out-of-favor Billy Butler. It’s just a bad move for KC, and hey, a free reliever for Florida.

When the numbers are skewing as bad as Jacob’s, at his age, I’d rather be on Florida’s end just in terms of medical knowlege.

Nunez is also younger.

I think Dayton Moore got his nose tweaked…

Maybe.

We’ll see, I suppose. I just don’t trust Nunez to turn into anything too special.

do you think jacobs is 100 ops+ guy next year?

That’s right around his average, so why not.

by brettgardner on Oct 30, 2008 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions

royals fan here

Nunez is nothing special. Decent but not elite as Fox sports reported. Spends time on the DL every year. Moore has been able to pull people off of the scrapheap and build a decent bullpen. Nunez will most likely be replaced with Rosa, who has his own injury problems, but with alot more upside.

by gordonrules on Oct 30, 2008 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the argument should be

Maybe KC is happy to get even Jacobs for him, but I think the Royals could have gotten more for Nunez. People like to overpay for relievers with shiny numbers.

by JBImaknee on Oct 30, 2008 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Now that Jacobs has went to the Royals

Would the Marlins be intrested in Chris Davis for Nolasco? I don’t advocate trading Davis unless he can fetch a stud pitcher.

Probably not

Gaby Sanchez is likely to take Jacobs’ place. He’ll probably provide better production than Jacobs for less money.

an even better prospect one stop behind him in Logan Morrison.

right

and even if that weren’t the case I don’t see FL trading away Nolasco.

I'm not surprised

at all. He’s a shadow of his former self and that’s a lot of money. Plus, the two teams are splitting the buyout, so it’s only costing them $2M.
