Giving away the new Josh Hamilton book
So, the publishers of the new Josh Hamilton book have sent me a free copy to read and review.
I haven't done that yet (for those who are interested, I'm currently reading Anathem). However, I plan to in the next week or so, and to post a review.
The publishers also, though, have offered to make a few copies available for free to readers of LSB.
So this week, we're going to do some things to select folks to get free copies.
Today's contest, if you will, is easy...if you want a free copy, say so in the comments, and give your best explanation as to why I should decide that you should get the book.
The best response, as judged by me, wins.

sTRanger Fan since Day #1 Gets the Book... !
Plus, I’m the first to reply to your first message!
I’ve been watching / listening to the sTRangers since 1972 when I stumbled across their first game on WBAP 820 way out just NE of Lubbock, TX.
I’ve seen those guys with Great Potential (George Wright, Ruben Sierra, David Clyde) derail themselves with egos that prempted their careers.
I’ve seen those guys with Little or No Potential (Geno Petralli, Scott Fletcher, Michael Young) turn themselves into serviceable-to-good Major League players – in Arlington.
I’ve seen trouble makers (Lennie Randle punched out his manager, Frank Lucchesi; Mark Teixeira stifling younger players advancement; Jose Canseco) trotted out onto the field because they were Players.
I’ve seen collegiate Herculeans (Oddibe McDowell & Pete Incaviglia) have not-so-spectacular careers in the Big Leagues in Arlington.
I’ve seen us lose more games than I can count and win more games that should have been losses than you could believe.
…and, I liked Lennie Randle… Lucchesi probably got what he deserved – he never should’a followed Billy Martin, anywho…
If at first you don't succeed, try the outfield! Ed

A reason
I’d like a copy. To read, as one who has a kind of faith, but is cynical about demonstrations of outward Christianity and those who publically profess transformations because of belief. And more importantly, as one who would pass it on to an 18 year old granddaughter who persistently chooses wrong paths and is wrecking what was great optimism about her future.

I'm not sure I should be so fortunate to receive the book for free...
but it’s been years since I’ve finished a book. I start a new one every few months, then get caught back up in work, TV and the girlfriend. It’s pathetic, and I want to get back to reading and sharpen my brain again. I think this would be the perfect book, as I am fascinated by Josh’s story, and I can honestly say that even though I haven’t slipped to the level he was at, I have had my share of self-inflicted problems that I can’t seem to shake, and I could possibly benefit from reading his point of view.

Well I want to tell you a story. I had this girlfriend for like 2 years. For my birthday in September, she bought me a Josh Hamilton blue Texas alternate jersey. Very cool. I’d like to wear it all the time and just party, but she dumped me a couple of weeks ago. So I’d like to associate Josh Hamilton with something other than getting dumped, and hopefully, reading this book can rehabilitate my opinion of the jersey to the point that I will actually want to wear it. Don’t let a jersey go to waste.

I should get a free copy
because my sister and her kids are staying here with me, they’ve been here two months and are staying at least a another two weeks and are driving me up the wall. I fear that I may have bald patches soon from pulling my hair out, and that may look all sexy on men like Sean Connery, but for a woman it is the kiss of death, nobody wants to marry Lucy Chrome Dome. Not that I can invite a guy over without the little ones playing 20 questions. I love my nephews but living with them makes me want to tie my tubes, and smack my sister around for a good half hour.
So you see, this situation is threatening my follicular health, dating life, sex life and future reproductive prospects, not to mention that I might go to jail for sister-on-sister domestic violence. In order for me not to commit Hari Kari, I need to read about someone who has been through worse. I think this book fits that bill.
Thanks for listening.

I should be the chosen one
Because my universal infinite awesomeness is superceded only by that of Josh Hamilton. Two such entities are bound by the same energy within this dimension. Clearly I should learn as much as possible about my synergistic brother so that I may prevent dimensional annihilation. Because I have yet to write have an autobiography, it is squarely on my shoulders to ensure a safe existence.
Plus I can read good!

Live in Galveston and suffered Hurricane Ike’s devastation as well. I’ve had to go back home and live with my parents until the end of this month when school starts.
I don’t have a single good novel with me right now and I need something to overcome the boredom I’m facing. Sure I should be studying because I have a midterm the first week I go back to Galveston, (which I’ll be out of class for 39 days before then), but who really wants to study the same thing for over a month.
Plus this little “vacation” is destroying my real summer vacation. As of now if October 20th is the real startup date I’ll only have 4 weeks for summer. Plus they’re taking a week away from Christmas break as well.

My thought
is that I would best be served by the book in that still being young and in high school, I think it would provide me with some insight as to how to fight the temptation to do drugs and to always fight to accomplish your goals no matter what adversity rises in your way. Josh Hamilton is like a Phoenix, he was knocked down several times by adversity and drug use, among other things, but he continued to fight through and ultimately succeeded and that, I think is a lesson that we can all learn from.

Young Life
Used Josh’s story for a Young Life (high school outreach ministry organization) talk to eighty or so kids on opening day of this season. My main point to the kids was that he was a success story, regardless of how he would perform this season as he had so turned his life around through faith. As the season progressed, I kept them up to date on his progress, happily announcing his winning of AL POM for April and May. But his performance at the Home Run Derby was what got the kids attention. I received so many text messages during the course of the first round (that I unfortunately missed live), most of which are unrepeatable here…hey, they’re high schoolers.
Just looking forward to next season, and what it holds for Josh and the Rangers. And I would love to share the book with the kids.

Well
today is my 22nd birthday (October 6th) and I am spending it reading about a hundred pages of torts, contracts, and civil procedure. As a lawyer yourself, Adam, I’m sure you can sympathize with the amount of monotonous reading a 1L like myself must encounter everyday. Reading something a little more gripping than federal statute and case law sounds very appetizing.
I have also been a Ranger fan since my entire life, even as I have been forced to relocate to Manhattan for school. I have read your blogs, posts, and ideas from the time I was 14 and you were just known as Meno on the ESPN board.
With all that said, I gotta agree with Gossamer- selling the book on ebay and giving the money to charity might be the way to go.

because she knows only 2 Rangers and little else about baseball, one is Nolan Ryan, because he is the king of Texas and all he did here as a ranger caught her attention in the early 90s, then this year when i gave her the Sports Illustrated to read Josh’s Story she wanted to know more about him, then after seeing him in the All star game HR Derby (she does not watch baseball at all, ever) but this event she watched, i even recorded it for her, as far as I know she has not heard of this book, i would love to have it to give to her. thanks

gift for dad
If I were to be given a copy of the book, I wouldn’t even want it for myself. I would give it to my dad for his 50th birthday, which is coming up in January. My family’s been wanting to do something for his 50th, but none of us are doing that well financially. I wanted to take him to spring training, just for a weekend, next spring, but I don’t have the money to do it. I wrote a book and sent it to a book contest, and if it wins I can afford the spring training trip. I would honestly rather have that than the book (which would be my first), and writing is the path I’ve chosen in life, but I love the Rangers. My dad loves the Rangers. It was kind of our first thing together, and it kind of took awhile.
So if I can’t take him to spring training on the prize winnings from a book contest, then I want to at least get him a good Rangers book for his 50th birthday. He certainly won’t have another.

I would love to a copy of the book.
My children and I have been in a circle ride in fighting to keep their father alive. He has health problems now due to the heavy drinking done for many years. As we all know the repeated circle, one quits for months at a time and then falls off the wagon. He loves baseball, football, basketball, etc., and has picked up reading a lot more to keep his mind off old habits. This book would be extremely insightful to someone who could relate to the story and leverage it as tool for motivation and encouragement. I believe Josh Hamilton is an inspiration to all for what he has triumpt in his personal and professional life.

Josh Hamilton
I am a huge baseball fan and a huge Rangers fan. When i heard we were getting Hamilton i was excited. I knew his past and thought he wasted his talents but after i heard of his recovery it was an even greater story. This story will help my faith in God and walk with him closer and will share the story with other people
