Could the Tigers be a potential fit for a trade?
Here is an interesting post from mlbtraderumors.com where a writer tries to predict the Tigers off season. Of course it includes a blurb about Texas maybe being a potential partner for a trade. The Tigers need a SS and a veteran catcher(according to Jim Leyland).
"The Tigers could also look to the Rangers for a shortstop. They have Elvis Andrus and Joaquin Arias in the pipeline, as well as Michael Young, whose five-year, $80MM extension just begins kicking in for 2009. To get a catcher and a shortstop from Texas, I would imagine, wouldn't happen without the inclusion of Rick Porcello."
Let the discussion begin. If I remember correctly, Mr. Porcello was someone that many people wish was drafted by Texas. We needed a highly touted pitcher that could possibly make an impact within a few years at the major league level. However, that didn't happen and we drafted both Blake Beavan AND Michael Main before Rick Porcello was even drafted.
If I were the Rangers, I'd be intriged with that name if the Tigers were willing to talk. I might even give them their choice of catcher. SS is a different story because you have Elvis who is less than a year away before he make a debut and Arias hasn't exactly shown that he can man SS. Young wouldn't be taken unless we kicked in some cash because the Tigers want to get younger, not older.
I'm actually torn about it really. Lets say the Tigers want Tea and Elvis, do you do it? Or Salts and Elvis, do you think Detroit does it? Do you see Leyland trading for maybe two experienced players like Laird and Young?
Realistically, what package do you see both teams agreeing on? Discuss.

Porcello
I don’t think his name was ever mentioned in the link Adam provided that morning…

It was in the comments, many of them.

Interesting
If Porcello’s name was mentioned, I would definitely be interested. If we are willing to take on this Boras client, then Andrus and Laird would start my package and probably have to include two more prospects including an arm.
That would be some rotation down the line… Holland, Feliz, Beaven, Main and Porcello. Whew!

We're a fit for them
but they’re not a fit for us. You don’t get Porcello without a huge stud, and they really don’t have guys at the next tier that we’d want. Maybe Bonderman is a fit, I don’t know. But I don’t think that any of their under control long term types are.

That is true
and I’m not saying getting Porcello is feasible, but Maybin and Miller were traded last year. So I can see them getting desperate and saying f- it and trading Porcello for a decent Ranger package not involving a “huge stud” if it helps the teams needs. Young/Salt/Poveda for Porcello. I think they’d do that. Even if we have to throw a little cash in. This is a team still thinking WS and that trade would significantly help them next year.
Fire Todd Dodge. Seriously. 42-10 to FIU? Come on.

but they were traded for MIGUEL CABRERA
not elvis andrus, gerry laird and a bunch of prospects as well
young/salty/poveda for porcello would not get it done – they already have renteria, guillen, santiago, etc who can play SS
what would they do? move FOTF to 2b? (not a bad idea for another team) but the word is they are trying to cut 20-30+ mil from their salary…how would adding FOTF do that?

If the goal is to cut salary
Then it makes no sense at all for either side.

for either side?
trading michael young makes a ton of sense if the rangers want to shed salary

I can't imagine Porcello
could be had for something like Tea/Elvis. It’d have to be more than that I think.

We didn't draft Porcello for a few reasons
The impression I had was that the reasons were he wanted $7 million in small, unmarked, consecutive bills… and he wanted a major-league contract. The signing bonus has been paid so that wouldn’t be an issue, but he still has a major league contract while having never pitched an inning above high-A.

Irrelevant
He’s more than enough talent to justify a 40 spot.
They’re just not going to trade him.

+1 there
hes always had the talent, but the question is who would give him a 40 man spot out of HIGH SCHOOL

Would rather explore...
….something like Salty/Arias/Poveda for Bonderman. Flashes of brilliance but littered with inconsistency….but would be an upgrade over any starter in the current rotation

Wouldn't touch him
Bonderman has been out since June with the same condition as Blalock. If Hank can’t throw from third to forst after recovering, then what kind of pitcher would Bonderman be next year.
I would only take him for a discount, not a Salty/Poveda/Arias package.

Background
For what it’s worth, he’s long been a personal favorite of some notables here, hence why he’s in the middle of this conversation. Definitely a big gamble, I agree.

Big Gamble

Different kind of gamble. Both of those players had shown in 2007 that they were probably going to be nice players for several years before their team lost control of them. The gamble/risk was more in what you were giving up in each case than that you could get next to nothing from the guy. With Bonderman, when I call it a gamble, I’m referring to the fact that this is someone with a known, fairly serious injury, who is close to free agency. You stand a decent chance of getting zilch out of the guy. On the other hand, you also stand a chance of getting a #2 starter.

Well why not stand pat at just a Laird for Bonderman,
I mean how much value is Laird really gonna bring back.

Oh
if you could get Bonderman with just Laird, I think you’d jump all over that. There isn’t enough bang for Detroit’s buck there, though.

Blalock
His inability to throw is not, I think, so much TOS related as it is issues with his shoulder.

How long did it take Kenny Rogers to recover from that same surgery?
by Inkara1 on Oct 6, 2008 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Seems like he had it in the season, and pitched well the next season.
So, as those things go, it was a quick recovery. I remember being shocked how fast he recovered after basicly getting a rib cut out.

Leyland
has also said that he wants an “experienced catcher”.
