OT: Texas/OU

I know it's only Tuesday (Wednesday Morning), but it's about time to start the thread. Both teams look very good early in the season against weak competition. Colt McCoy looks like Major Applewhite reincarnate, and OU looks unstoppable on offense. It's a battle of top 5 teams with Mizzou looming for Texas. What I want is not only predictions, but explanations as to why your prediction will come true.

I say Texas 27-17

McCoy is playing out of his head right now, and Muschamp has the defense rolling. The biggest question is UT's running game, but I think that they can get it done by committee (Yes, I'm a Homer). Thoughts?

It would really help if the 'Horns can pull the upset since I'll be in Austin for UT/Mizzou on the 18th.

Aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrggggghhh!!

That’s my favorite noise in the world to make, and I make it one day a year on the second weekend in October when I’m almost (read: totally) blacked out and the Horns score an effing touchdown. Well, I actually make that noise a lot now that I think about it. It’s just the noise I make when I’m hammered and awesome things happen, and I’m in a situation where acting like a caveman is appropriate (read: borderline acceptable). Like at football games, and after you beat someone at shotgunning a beer, and when homeless people ask you for money downtown.

This year I will not be in attendance for the first time since 2000, as I will be on a cruise in Cozumel with my girlfriend. </ slightbrag > I’m attempting to go radio silent until I return stateside on Monday, fly back to the casa, not look at any computers/cellphones/newspapers/etc and watch the game like its real time. How isolated are cruises from news sources? Is it reasonable for me to survive ~60 hours after kickoff w/o hearing an update? Damn it, I really think the ship will be full of fat older rich Texans that won’t be able to shut up about the game in the casino. I, too, will be at Mizzou… and I want it to be for the #1 spot in the country.

As for the game, I agree about Muschamp… and I love that he looks like a D coordinator. Screaming, sweating, violent hand motions, intense looks of rage… he scares me. Our D is flying around like they haven’t since ‘05, and I think he’s a big part of it. Sergio and Orakpo are bringing pain, and our secondary has played very well with the added pressure from up front.

Running wise, I’ll be very surprised if Ogbonnaya doesn’t get the bulk of the carries. None of the young kids have done anything to distinguish themselves, and Oby is a veteran, smart, well rounded back that you can feed the rock to and be confidant he will not drop it. His hands are also the best of the RB core, so he should play a pretty big role in the passing game as OU will bring heat like nobody we’ve seen this year and Oby is a steady check-down option with the ability to bust a big one.

The x-factor is I haven’t seen OU play this year, so I’m not sure how each team’s strengths/weaknesses match up. OU always comes to play vs. us, so I’m not expecting anything different. And I don’t think there’s any way we keep them under 27.

Colt’s healthy, and when healthy he’s shown he’s a hell of a QB. Let’s hope we can keep him that way all year… no more embarrassments against the aggies in November. Anyway, I expect a hard-nosed battle and hope everyone comes out of it healthy… I don’t want to see any more season’s derailed like Blaine’s was.

McCoy has improved dramatically, and Texas’ line play is better than I expected, but they don’t have the skill players or defensive secondary (experience). OU will win by two touchdowns.

waitwaitwaitwaitwait

You mean Colt McCoy is coming through that door (i hope you meant “down that tunnel”)? Like he did in 2006? As a freshman? When Texas won 28-10? Whew, thought you may have forgotten about that.

As for the great Bob Stoops, he would never not have his team prepared for a game now, would he? He sure didn’t in ‘01 vs OSU when all he had to do to make the Big 12 championship was win? 13-16 anyone?
Or in ’02 vs. an unranked A&M (with fresh qb Reggie McNeal)? 26-30. Or vs. OSU again? 6-35. Both unranked opponents
’03 do you remember the embarrassment at the Big 12 championship vs. KState?
How about not even getting off the bus in ’04 vs. USC in the national championship?
Last years’ Fiesta Bowl was the same situation, getting rolled by WVU.

My point is not to dog on Stoops, as I believe he is one of the 5 best coaches in college football. However, saying Tx problem is Mack Brown is just ridiculous, and loses you all merit in my mind. The days of benching Applewhite for Simms are far behind us, and since those days I’ve been very impressed with how the Horns show up week in and week out. The A&M games the last two seasons were direct results of Colt being so banged up he shouldn’t have been playing, but you’ll never get that kid to show weakness.

Texas has won 6 of our last 7 bowl games under Mack. We’ve had 7 straight 10 win seasons. SEVEN. OU doesn’t have that. USC doesn’t have that. Longest active streak in the nation, baby. Don’t discount Mack, this isn’t 2004.

Coaching, to me, is an advantage decidedly in Oklahoma’s corner.

Texas now has Will Muschamp

Which means that for once, the coaching advantage would seem to be in UT’s corner. I’ve never seen the D so fired up and with such good play coming into this game.

Never said it wasn't

I’m setting the record straight for “underachiever fits him” re: Mack. As Mike Gundy would say, "THAT’S NOT TRUE!!’

OU has never not shown up for a game vs. TX, but they have a laundry list of blowing games they SHOULD win that just seems to get ignored when early October rolls around. Every October Stoops is like the greatest coach in the world, yet almost every Nov or Jan his squad either blows a “gimme” game or gets embarrassed by someone with comparable talent. 55-19 vs USC is pathetic and embarrassing, would have rather seen Jason Campbell and Auburn that year get their shot. Losing to Boise State in a BCS bowl is embarrassing, I don’t care how good people think Boise was or how much trickery was used… losing in a BCS bowl to a mid-major is unacceptable if you have the talent OU does. Your team has had a month and a half to get healthy and prepare.

OU treats games every year like the other team is gonna roll over and die because they are the big bad Sooners, and it comes back to haunt them. That is coaching and preparation.

Decent coach? Underachiever? Give me a break. 7 straight 10 win seasons means your team consistently shows up to play, week in and week out. I’m tired of all this “Mack Brown sucks” shit. There are MAYBE 5 coaches in all of div1 football you’d rather have. Carroll, Stoops, Mack, Urban, Tressel, and Saban can have arguments made for #1. That means worst case, Mack is 6. Decent coach my ass.

I have had WAY too much coffee today. I need to dump, leave campus, smoke a bowl, and I’ll be back.

OU wins 38-14

reasons:

1. mack brown’s gets to conservative in these games and plays it safe which tx cannot move the ball that way
2. OU o-line and d-line are better than tx
3. TX has not played anybody and have not been tested
4. and lastly 4 guys that will win the game for OU Demarco Murry, Jermaine gresham, sam bradford, and manuel johnson, tx has nobody to stop them.

future prediction.

texas goes 1-3 in their next four :

loss-ou in dallas
loss-missouri in austin
win-Ok state in austin
loss-tech in lubbock

I have a question for you guys, or anybody watching ESPN

So who plays in the “red river rivalry” because I have never heard of that bullshit. Do they seriously have to go that far?

They changed Missouri/Kansas from the Border War to the Border “Showdown”

I mean how far is it going to go, “Friendly engagement?” “Slight Conflict?”

by SaltyGoesYard on Oct 8, 2008 9:01 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   1 recs

It pisses me off.

The Border War was not only a badass name, but it reflected what actually happened between Kansas and Missouri. They fought a freakin’ war! What’s so caricatured about that?

Ok... here's my prediction... take it with a grain of salt.

I think UT has the overall better special teams and defense due to Will Muschamp and an AMAZING front four, but OU gets a slight (and I mean SLIGHT) advantage on offense due to their established running game via DeMarco Murray.

UT’s lack of running game (established running back) will hurt them tremendously here if someone doesn’t step up because that is OU’s defensive weakness. I think the key will be if UT’s front four is able to really put pressure on Bradford throughout the game, because we all know what happens if the guy has time to stand in the pocket and throw the ball (and with UT’s defensive backfield’s inexperience, that could be uglier than usual in this game).

On offense, Colt McCoy can’t be the lead rusher for UT, and must be mistake-free in the passing game, as OU’s front four will pressure him and the linebacking core for OU will force him to rush for less yardage than he is accustomed to getting. Ogbonnaya/McGee/Johnson/Whittaker are the keys for UT’s offense to roll, or fall flat on their faces. Colt cannot make a mistake throwing the ball, or UT’s confidence is lost and so is the game.

UT has to make a big play in the game somewhere on special teams (big return, blocked kick, etc.), and can’t allow Bradford to pick apart the secondary with ample time to throw, and MUST establish a ground game in the first half, or OU will take this one.

My prediction: OU 31, UT 27 (And I’m going, so I hope to God that I’m wrong)

by utlonghorn24 on Oct 8, 2008 9:44 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You're dead-on on a couple points.

The game, to me, comes down to UT’s D-Line vs. OU’s O-Line. Whoever wins that battle holds a major, major advantage.

UT’s got to find a run game, and not just for this game. Mizzou has shown the ability to stop the pass whenever there’s no run game established (see: Nebraska), and you can’t allow a team like Tech to load up against the pass.

Special teams are also key to this game. Both teams have very good offenses, both teams have good (not great) defenses, and the difference might be in special teams. OU’s been very, very shaky on special teams as of late (allowed kickoff return for a TD vs. Cincinnati, big returns vs. TCU).

by ghtd36 on Oct 8, 2008 9:49 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreeeeeee

But, you can’t say that since Mizzou stops Nebraska’s passing offense they can stop TX. Not the same talent.

And Jesus Christo… EVERYONE STOP TALKING ABOUT TECH. They are around the top 10 every year until they enter real play vs. real opponents. That offense is always sexy, come talk to me when they fix the D.

Agreed on your UT/Neb. comparison.

However, it’s sorta like comparing OU’s performance against Baylor and UT’s against Colorado to the other rival. Just not comparable. You basically just have to look at what you have talent-wise, because that’s about what you can expect in this game (barring injuries). This game always seems to bring out the best in both teams, especially in the last 4 or 5 years.

It was a joke.

Posting pictures about how our QB is a wuss and bashing UT with everything you’re saying (and being the first person to do anything of the sort), qualifies you as having started it.

If you wanna joke in fun or whatever, that’s fine, but quit making your sole purpose in life (along with far too many of your fellow Aggies) bashing and cutting down UT. Get a life, grow up, and talk football or go away. Please.

wished inj on anybody. the pansy comment did not come from the tu v. a&m game it came because he is weak (did he fix that last off season? yes) but jevan sneed a qb from a 4a school (and has a better arm) (and knocked off florida) would be better for tu.

as for mcgee i have not looked at stats but i think he was hit a few more times than mccoy was last year and probably the year before that as franchonie miss used him in an option offense (which messed up his arm) when he was tearing up highschool defenses passing the ball

hmm

i am still not sure i ever compared texas A&M to tu

as well i have never said that a&m has had a better football program since they started playing.

so my comments were all an opinion (which i think this site is for) on how i think texas is over rated. the thing is that since everybody knows i am an aggie they think i am mouth texas just because they are texas acutally i enjoyed watching the game the last 2 years but i will admit (might be the only aggie that will) that tx v. ou is a bigger rivalry.

am i a fan of tx no!
am i a fan of ou no!
do i root for big 12 teams when not playing against one another yes!

so all the longhorns look into the mirror and realize that if you were not worried about this game you would not be so upset.

as well i wish a&m had mack brown as a recruiter not a coach though.

I think they do it as just one more thing to piss us off.

And it works. Because it’s stupid, childish, and it shows how A&M’s chief goal in their existence is to make themselves look “better” than UT, when in reality, they do just the opposite. GROW UP AGGIES.

FWIW...

The UT band (which I was in the year I attended UT) uses the “BTHO” phrase at the end of every practice, and in many of the drumline cadences that are used when marching to/from the field at both home and away games, parades, etc.

I don’t know who used it first, but I do know that we use it A LOT.

At any rate, I think he hasn’t responded because we’re right. It’s annoying and I’m hoping he’s ashamed, as all his fellow Aggies who use the “tu” crap should be.

hello my longhorn friends

i am hoping for a close game tomorrow so the game is fun to watch. After spending time on burntorangenation.com i have changed my views a little on what i think the score will be so instead of 38-14 i will change that to 38-24 OU.

its been a busy couple of days at work so sorry to disappoint yall with no response.

and yes it is fun to annoy longhorn fans (utlonghorn24) its all in good fun i have saved this fanpost and hoping i get to pull it out on thanksgiving day for when a miracle happens.

Sorry to inform this will be my last post on this topic and i will be on lower greenville watching the game at stans blue note if anybody would like to watch the TU v. OU game.

or if anybody knows of any other good place to go let me know. and if i was in college station this weekend i would be at the chicken (trident)

My 2 bits

Texas wins this game, but by no more than 3 points.

McCoy faces real pressure and Greg Davis refuses to call anything but screens. McCoy forces at least one over the middle for an INT that leads to points for OU.

If Fozzy is cleared to play, he gets 75% of the carries, otherwise Johnson. Chris Ohimgonnabangya may be named the starter, but I doubt it lasts more than a series or two.

Bradford gets Bomar’d at least once.

Muschamp’s defense sticks with a long-time UT tradition of only getting beat on 10 yard post routes. The secondary isn’t that great, but I think they’ll do an adequate job covering the deep threat.

OU’s running game is controlled, though I wouldn’t be surprised if they have at least one 30 yard running play. Adjustments will be made afterwards.

I say 31-28 Texas.

by chief on Oct 8, 2008 4:48 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Haha...

Bradford getting Bomar’ed would absolutely make the $150 I spent on my ticket WELL worth it.
