A new poll -- catchers
Okay, folks, time for a new poll...and this one is an easy one...
Who do you believe will start the most games at catcher for the Rangers next year?
Not who should...who will, at the end of 2009, have the most starts there?

I think
we need # 38 on the greatest Rangers of all time
because he hasn't even reached his peak yet, up until this point, he just did it on talent. - Ron Washington on Josh Hamilton
Well...
The real problem with the poll on the hottest female supporting character from The Simpsons is that it’s missing the two hottest characters, twins Sherri and Terri. Am I right people?!!!
Republican or Democrat? You mean I have to pick just one? But what if I love violence AND hate liberty?

If it's Gerald Laird
its another nail in JDs coffin.

Why?
What if TT and Salty are both traded for young ML ready pitchers and we sign a veteran backup and let Max grow in the minors while we decide if he is a catcher or a DH?
I agree if TT or Salty is with the team next year and Laird gets the most starts then something is wrong but your blanket statement is a bad one IMO

I don't believe its possible
to get a young, ML ready pitcher for TT AND Salty, let alone or. Or if you did get one, it would most likely have a 5+ ERA for Texas.
Folks seem to think that teams are just excited to go up and trade their top starters away.
I doubt we get a big time impact player for any of them, so we might as well trade Laird, who has the least upside left.

Not necessarily one for one
But each could be the centerpiece of a trade for a young ML ready starter. Just off the top of my head Florida and Cincy come to mind as teams who have young Ml ready pitching and could use a young catcher. Im sure there are others but im not really in the research mood right now.

And Varitek suuuuuuucks.
…that is unless you, like the Boston homers, want to spout off about his “intangibles” and “leadership.” They like to ignore his .220 average and .672 OPS. and 74 OPS+
Luckily, Bill James is not such an idiot as the remainder of the RS Nation and hopefully realizes they have to get a catcher. I still want some Buchholz.
Man, looking at the stats, JV was worse than I thought this season. Then again, his OPS+ over the last 3 seasons has averaged 87.
But he's so...
…leader-y with all his great leadership-ness.

Crap, Well I Did
I think the Rangers make a big play for Bucholtz and the way to get him forces a trade of Tea rather than Salty. I think that BOS is not as high on Salty as some of the articles out have suggested. I think they will be after Tea (and then some) and for Bucholtz you have to pull the trigger.
I think Laird is starting catcher and Salty is in AAA for several months. Then Salty takes over but doesn’t end the year with more ABs.
I do hope to be wrong. But if I am right and Laird is the winner because we got Bucholtz, then I will be thrilled.

No
No Salty at 1B. If you aren’t going to have him catch, trade him.
And no Davis at 3B.

My vote is for Teagarden
I’d rather have Salty or Max, but I get the feeling this organization loves them some Teagarden and will give him and his dreamy eyed plussy-plus defense every chance to succeed here long term.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
Those are very similar...
…to my reasons for voting Teagarden.

Max's Bat
is ML ready now, but I’m not sure his glove will ever be. I think they moved him to C too late. At most you have one more year to teach him to C in the minors before he starts becoming a little long in the tooth for the minors. I’m not sure its enough time, as weak as he looks back there.

Meh
I prefer great bat/passable defense catchers to passable bat/great defense catchers.
I think Max could be a passable defensive catcher if given a shot.
If your Cayhillian view of him is correct and he can’t be passable back there… then I don’t know. He really loses a lot of value if he has to move off catcher cause he’s too short to play 1b and too slow to play LF so he’d pretty much be dh-or-bust.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
He looks pretty terrible to me back there
but I’ve only seen a few games. Maybe I caught him on off days.
Although I suspect its just a lack of time by him behind the plate. According to BR, he has caught 212 games in his Pro career in the majors or minors. I just think it may be a little late to convert him to a catcher and even get him up to average defensively. I think DH/backup Catcher/backup 1B might be the best place for him.

Put it this way
Laird is starting only if Tea is traded.
Salty’s third string right now. If the team’s content to keep Max at C, he’s fourth.
Nice to read EG’s notes on Felix at DMN blog. Appears he’s still coming along.
Go Strangers.
Curious - why are you voting for Tea?
Is it because you think Salty will be traded?
Or is it because you think Tea will beat out Salty for the lion’s share of starts due to his play?
I voted for Tea...
…because I expect a Salty trade, either in the offseason or during the season.

Tea
He’ll start over Salty because he’s kicked his ass at the catcher position. A Salty trade wouldn’t be necessary just going by the numbers.
Here’s hoping Saltalamacchia has enough value to fetch a proper return, though.

Tea
because I think Salty will be platooned coming back from injury, or worse, traded at a low value point. They’ve dicked around with his development thus far and I don’t see the situation clearing up in a good way unless they allow him to compete for the starting job, while trading Tea at a fairly high point.

Because I feel that he's the best defensive catcher
And I think that will overshadow any of his offensive deficiencies. I think Max should be kept as a backup catcher who plays 2 times a week at C and the rest at DH. Laird and Salty should be traded.
I don't see Wash...
…or any other manager really, playing his backup C at DH on a regular or even semi-regular basis.

True but...
…baseball managers are loathe to move away from certain philosophies. Not DHing your catcher is one of them.

A slightly different reason
For expecting Laird to be the 2009 starter. He may not have the trade value that JD will want or accept, while Salty may and Tea probably will. I do see Teagarden gradually ascending to first string catcher, but a part timer to begin 2009. A lot depends on whether or not Bradley is retained to DH. If so, Max begins the year in AAA.
Not so much deduction, as reduction. Who IMHO stays, versus who goes.

Max
I really really wish he would start the year in AAA Bradley or no Bradley. because I hate the idea of having your backup catcher as your DH full time. And if we put Max at DH now we completely diminish his potential trade value. Hell even having him as the backup catcher/DH reduces his trade value enough that you wouldn’t want to trade him. Ultimately I think Max’s destiny with the Rangers is as a trade piece ala Matt LaPorta. He won’t bring back a CC but if we keep him at catcher, even in the minors, and he continues to rake, which he hasn’t exactly done yet above AA, then he can be the centerpiece in a trade during the year. With Smoak and Davis in the pipeline who look to be the longterm 1B/DH combo we could get a haul for Max in a few months.
