The expanding ads problem on LSB
Okay, folks, I know there's been an issue with some of the ads lately. We just got the following email from our tech folks:
Hey everyone,Some of you might have received reports or experienced yourself these
top banner ads that expand over your content without you even rolling
over them with your mouse. We are getting a relatively high volume of
complaints via our support form and are well aware of the issue.
Currently, we're working with Federated Media, our advertising
partner, to track these ads down and remove them. We have been since
early last week. However, the reports from users continue to roll in.
One thing that will help us quite a bit are screenshots. Please send
them to support@sbnation.com if you see one of these ads. If someone
contacts you about the ads, ask them to do the same.thanks,
Trei

Firefox and AdBlock Plus
That’s all you need to know.

Does adblock slow down your computer at all?
I haven’t had any problems as long as I use firefox really, but after seeing people rave about adblock over and over I’m curious. The last adblocker I had (norton or something) really slowed me down.
Just say no to Scott Olsen.
Nope
if anything it runs smoother because it’s not trying to load all the ads.

The only thing I've noticed
is that since I’ve installed ABP my running copy of Firefox is taking up much more memory than it used to. It’s running at about 75Mb which is way higher than it ever use to run. It’s not slowing my PC down though fortunately I have an almost brand new laptop, but on older machines I can see that it might cause some issues.

I had a feeling that the first post here would be something like this.

That's my solution and is why I was like, "What expanding ads problem?"
I don’t mind ads, per se… I mind “rich media” ads that make a lot of noise or get in the way of what I’m trying to read, either by expanding ads like have been here or ads that cover up most of the screen and have a hidden “close” button. (The videos on the right side of the ESPN.com pages are also annoying, mainly because they automatically start playing.) I also don’t like ads on separate servers that go down, making it so the ads don’t load and the whole page will stall out while waiting for ad.doubleclick.net or whatever server.
I would venture to guess a lot of people think like I do and that has led to the popularity of ad blockers in the first place. If the ads weren’t so annoying or potentially damaging to the computer, and if the ad servers didn’t sometimes go down and cripple the rest of the internet, I probably never would have downloaded adblock plus in the first place.
Agreed
Internet marketing got way too ostentatious and annoying. I wouldn’t mind some ads, either, but they’re too intrusive so now I just block every damn last one of them.

Dangit
I had one of these smoosh me out this morning, but I didn’t think to take a screenshot. They are right: these ads are extremely irritating.
And Firefox is my least favorite browser in the history of browsers. What a piece of garbage. /rant
Obligatory:
Try Opera with a custom Hosts file: super fast browser with no ads.

what are you using instead?
Any browser, ever made, on any system, for any reason whatsoever. Such is my hatred for Firefox.

ok
you’re not using any browser ever made. that would be weird. what browser are you actually using regularly

Combo
Sometimes IE, sometimes Chrome. I’m not complaining about what I use, I’m complaining about Firefox, and in comparison to any browser, ever made, Firefox is the hands-down worst of all.
chrome
that’s just silly.
so is IE but I could at least see why some people might think IE is better. no reason to think chrome is better though.

Chrome stinks
You can’t do anything with that program. It’s only useful feature is it’s independent tabs, meaning if you have something in one tab crash, it won’t take down the rest of the browser if you have multiple tabs open.
Just say no to Scott Olsen.
Yeah, that shits annoying
Crash one, crash all.

I haven't had any issues with the ads but I thought this was as good a place as any
to post this one particular ad that is always up here at LSB. Something seems a bit fishy…
Is there merit
In going from morbidly obese to grossly obese?

I would say so
Probably die a few years later. I’d say “at least that ad’s being realistic” but then you clearly have two different women that aren’t even the same race, haha. Kind of amusing.

Huh??
What is the point of taking screenshots??
The ads expand…..end of story!! No need to document them for evidence and stuff.
If someone doesn’t believe it’s happening, just go to this website…..duh!!
i like baseball too
it's to try to figure out which ads are doing them so they can be removed
they aren’t going ot remove all ads, just the ones that expand.

Firefox + AdBlock Plus makes LSB look like this

I'm undefeated in fights. Have I been in any? No. Thats because people know my f'ing status. Don't mess with the elite. - Miles
Command + shift + 4 which gives you an icon to select what you want to take a picture of and it saves the file to your desktop
Comman + shift + 3 takes the whole screen I think.

Consider my new setup
to be Firefox + AdBlock Plus.
