Holiday to the A's
Per Jon Heyman at CNNSI, the A's have traded for Matt Holliday. No word yet on the details but Heyman says it is done.
Here is the link: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/baseball/mlb/11/10/heyman.holliday/index.html
Heyman is now saying the A's are "closing in on a deal." So, I guess it's not done yet, but I have to admit, I don't really get it either unless they get a window to sign him.

Holy Crap!!!
I really hope the A’s traded a lot.
He only has a year left on his deal.
So probably not.
I guess they think they’re going to contend next year? I mean, Boras is his agent so he’s not going to re-sign unless they offer him crazy money (and it’s the A’s so that’s not likely).
Interesting stuff.
Brett Anderson
And package with him is borderline overpaying.
One-year rental.

You gotta factor in the money saved, too.

Actually
Street would make sense to be in the deal, along with a 1st baseman of the future for the Rox… so Street, Barton/Carter, Eveland.
Street, Carter and an Eveland-type pitcher (maybe not specifically Eveland) sounds about right.
That’d be an interesting deal.

Waaaay too much, imo.
Remember this an expensive player on a one year deal who has a 3-year road OPS of around .850.

Really interesting move here...
No way they resign him, right? How big of a package?
I’m confused
At this rate, he’ll be throwing 107-110 by 2012
For them it makes sense
depending on how much they gave up because he will probably be a type A and net them two draft picks after next year and will fill a huge hole in their pathetic outfield. They have a deep farm so unless they gave up a ton it makes sense.
But
they almost always do the exact opposite with guys approaching free agency. The only way it makes sense is if the price was absurdly low.
by Brett Perryman on Nov 10, 2008 1:44 PM CST up reply actions
Not always...
They basically traded for Damon and Dye because of the draft picks…
Wow.
Not much else to say until the particulars of the package come in.
I’m not a big Holliday fan, but he’s still pretty good.

damn...
that makes the A’s a lot more intimidating this year. though if they lose him next year when the rangers are hopefully really ready anyway, I guess its not so much of a big deal.
regardless obviously I hope the price was high.
the preceding post was a great success.
Also
This could lock up that #1 farm system spot =p Assuming they gave up at least one top guy.
the preceding post was a great success.
bright side
The Rangers should have the undisputed #1 system in the minors.

The vibe I'm getting from AN is that it's a bad deal regardless of who they gave if they don't re-sign him.
I just don’t see that happening. Boras is Holliday’s agent and I highly doubt he’ll let him re-sign (with Oakland in particular) without testing the FA market.
Beane
Is he gambling that he can get more in return trading Holliday next July than he’s giving up now?
check that
I was thinking it was the “Holliday”-sounding Jays pitcher.
Now I’m really confused about what the A’s are doing here.
Crazy
You may be right, but that sounds like crazy talk. I don’t think playing in Oakland is going boost Holliday’s value for a deadline deal.
by Jack Nicholson 1974 on Nov 10, 2008 2:04 PM CST up reply actions
He may feel
that with their pitching and the relative weakness of the AL West, they may be one big bat away from competing……. if not, trading him next July is always an option.
I don't see how
he would be able to get equal value for 2 months as opposed to a full season if he figures he’ll be able to trade him in July.
That sounds like when the Rangers trade someone away and everyone says that they’ll just resign him in the offseason, but that never actually happens.
Of course he won't get equal value...
He is trying to compete. He will net -1 prospect for a chance to compete.
I have NO idea what he's doing
I gotta think that he believes he’s selling high on somebody, maybe Carter or Huston or both.
At this rate, he’ll be throwing 107-110 by 2012
if Jon Daniels had done this deal
I would be extremely nervous right now (waiting to see who he parted with).
Greatest Inventions Ever? 1. TiVO, 2. Boobs, 3. Baseball
I would call for his head
if he acquired another outfielder, especially one this expensive and uncontrollable.
At this rate, he’ll be throwing 107-110 by 2012
Seen lots of reports
Huston, Greg Smith, Carlos Gonzalez seem to be the most frequently listed
At this rate, he’ll be throwing 107-110 by 2012
Gallagher's
name has been thrown around a good bit, too
At this rate, he’ll be throwing 107-110 by 2012
If those are the names...
That’s pretty workable.

per rosenthal
Ken Rosenthal chimes in…WHAT?!?!
The A’s are close to acquiring left fielder Matt Holliday from the Rockies, according to major-league sources.
The players the Rockies will receive have not been decided, and the deal likely will not be finalized for approximately 48 hours, sources said.
Over the weekend, the teams discussed A’s outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, left-hander Greg Smith and reliever Huston Street, according to one source, but it is not known if any or all of those players will be included in the package for Holliday.
Holliday will earn $13.5 million in 2009, then become a free agent.
The A’s are not acquiring him with the intention of flipping him or even trading him in July. The team is in position to increase its payroll to as much as $80 million, and plans to contend next season.
To that end, the A’s also are targeting free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal to be their leadoff man. Furcal is drawing interest from about 10 clubs, according to his agent, Paul Kinzer.
The acquisition of Holliday could help persuade him that the A’s are serious about competing.

Keith Law really likes Donaldson, so that’s something I guess. I almost think that it was more about what Beane wanted than who he wanted. He got one of those cheap, potentially viable starter types like he got two of in the Haren deal, a 2B, which he seems to be collecting, a catcher that they like, and, well, a Murton.
I think it’s going to be a Hudson on his ledger though.

Harden
I read it as an injury contingency move.
The player’s been healthy — he’s a great stretch-run pickup — but how long will that run?

If those are the names being throw around
doesn’t everyone think JD did better in the Tex deal?
I'm undefeated in fights. Have I been in any? No. Thats because people know my f'ing status. Don't mess with the elite. - Miles
Absolutely
and not even really close. Andrus, Feliz, Harrison is a better package… Salty and Beau added is just sick
At this rate, he’ll be throwing 107-110 by 2012
Different players, different situations.
Teix had an extra half year on his contract left, he was a significantly better defensive player (albeit at a less valuable defensive position) and he didn’t have the label of “Coors engineered player” hanging around neck.
Rangers hitters have the same label
for hitting in Texas.
Holliday's Home/Away OPS splits are pretty crazy.
Tex actually OPSed 983 on the road (as opposed to 791 at home) in 2006, and there was only a ~50 point spread between Home and Road in 04. Admittedly, he did have a Holliday’s like spread in 05 though.
The extra time matters
but Holliday is a good defensive player and TX hitters definitely have a stigma
At this rate, he’ll be throwing 107-110 by 2012
Well
I think you have to give kudos to JD for knowing that trading Tex with 1.5 years left instead 1 probably upped the return.

Holliday
he was not safe. The Padres got robbed.
Fire Todd Dodge. Seriously. Back to Suckville with a loss to FLA ATL but whatever, SUCK IT WESTERN KENTUCKY! 1-9 baby!
Trade
ESPN is reporting that Greg Smith and Bret Anderson were both under discussion. Well, duh! If I’m the Rockies I try to get the most pitching I can possibly get.
Strange move by Billy Beane, though. He doesn’t usually give up anything significant for one-year rentals.
The package is now supposedly
Street, Gonzalez and Greg Smith.
Not bad at all
I think the Rockies are getting a nice group of players in return.
As for the A’s, they have plenty of in-house replacements for Street. And they badly need a right-handed power bat.
Wow

Why?
.242 / .273 / .361
I wish our division rivals would load up on players like that.
I don't hate everything. In fact, I think LSB is just groovy.
Odd
Since Holliday just mentioned that he wanted to be traded to a contender. Mostly I’m saying that people don’t normally look at the As and think “perennial contender.” I’m guessing there was no no-trade clause (hell, I’m not even sure if you can get when signing contracts to avoid arbitration).
Nothing pithy here. Please move long.
So
does this move put them ahead of the Rangers as far as next year is concerned?
Fire Todd Dodge. Seriously. Back to Suckville with a loss to FLA ATL but whatever, SUCK IT WESTERN KENTUCKY! 1-9 baby!
I still don't think so
It looks like they are giving up at least a few pretty good Major League parts in this deal.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
I think so
I don’t have their full offensive lineup laid out in my head, though. But they won’t miss those three players much if at all and did add a badly needed good bat.
by Brett Perryman on Nov 10, 2008 2:58 PM CST up reply actions
Close
Although the Rangers only finished 3.5 games ahead of the A’s, the Rangers were killed by injuries. On the other hand, considering A’s had only one player slug above .400, Holliday should provide a good boost to the offense while not giving up any critical part.
Nothing pithy here. Please move long.
Sure
But I’d say the Rangers had a lot more injuries especially to the pitchers.
Nothing pithy here. Please move long.
I'm curious how many runs they lost by not having Chavez for so long
Admittedly, I’m sure it wouldn’t be enough to take them from third to second place…
Probably about as many as we lost with Hankles out for so long.

Kinsler
losing him at the end of the season (maybe could have had MVP numbers but for that), Uncle Milt being in and out all year, Young playing with a broken finger, basically every pitcher being out. Look at this list:
http://mlb.mlb.com/team/injuries.jsp?c_id=tex
Nothing pithy here. Please move long.
Oakland had a few big names go down too
Oakland’s list: http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/team/injuries.jsp?c_id=oak
I think they were really counting on Chavez, Sweeney and Thomas to keep the offense going.
I don't think those three
compare with Kinsler, Bradley and Blalock at all. Chavez hit .240/.306/.446 in 2007 and obviously was just awful while he was playing in 2008. Sweeney hit .286/.350/.383 while playing primarily in a corner. And I don’t know how we can say that they counted on Thomas when he started the year as a Blue Jay and was just picked up off the street during the season. And when he did play he was .263/.364/.387. Those three were barely replacement level for their positions, while the three Rangers were much, much better (and were all-stars in two cases) performers for theirs.
