Olsen, Willingham to Nationals
The Marlins have reportedly dealt Scott Olsen and Josh Willingham to the Nationals.
Going back to Florida? Emilio Bonifacio, P.J. Dean, and Jake Smolinski.
I got nothing. Maybe zywica can shed some light on those guys.

Win for the Rangers cause they don't get Olsen.
Willingham, I know he’s been up and down but he still has the potential to be pretty damn good. I don’t know, I think FLA would’ve done better by dealing them individually.
Fire Todd Dodge. Seriously. Back to Suckville with a loss to FLA ATL but whatever, SUCK IT WESTERN KENTUCKY! 1-9 baby!

wait
Olsen as an ace? seriously? Everything I’ve heard has that guy as a #4 or #5 guy on OUR staff!!

Well
Their supposed former ace is in our minor leauge system now.

Wait
He’s still in the system? He seemingly dropped off the face of the earth after being signed, did he have one of those season-ending injuries?

He was injured again (or never fully healed).
John Patterson (the man in question) was released. He’s a free agent.

Interesting...
good news for the Rangers. Most of us didn’t want any part of Olsen.
Plus you have to figure the reason they dealt Olsen to the Nats is because they couldn’t get one of the Rangers catchers for him. I would have thought that Olsen and Willingham could have got the Marlins more than that.
Now what are the chances that the Marlins would still look at moving another starter for a Rangers catcher though?

Just glad he's not a Ranger
The thought of Olsen in Arlington was a scary thought. Glad he’s not coming here.

Uggla
Im assuming this means Uggla is moving off 2B?

Packages
Based solely on baseballcube numbers I would compare that package to one of Duran, Beavan, and maybe Tim Smith?

Take that back
How about Duran, Boscan, and Osuna or Lawson?
Thought Smolinski was an OF first and misread Dean in short season rather than regular A ball.

Duran, Boscan and Matt West
perhaps. Dean is intriguing, but this is still a huge steal for the Nats.
Olsen was not worth Salty, but he is still a young lefty who pitched 200 innings with a 1.3 WHIP last season, so all this relief around here that we “avoided” him is laughable.
by clark on Nov 10, 2008 7:29 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
He's not good at baseball. Like at all. I don't care how many innings he threw or what hand he threw them with. And WHIP largely influenced by defense/luck.
His peripherals are terrible and have been trending down. Plus he’s apparently quite the asshole.
The chance that he could turn it all around and be a good player isn’t worth the considerable downside in this case, imo.
So that’s why I’m relieved we “avoided” trading any of our assets to get a sucky ballplayer we’d then have to devote starts and innings to next year.

defense and luck
He must be lucky then because the fish are the only team close to as poor as us defensively

yep
i don’t get why everyone is so happy when:
1) JD is smart enough not to give up a C for him
and
2) We should have made that trade with similar players.

I trust him.
I don’t want to waste a rotation spot on that useless bag of suck.
The chances he turns it around are too low to bother with, imo.
I’d rather see what Hurley, McCarthy, Nippert, Harrison, Hunter, etc. have than spend a bunch of time watching Scott Olsen prove that he’s not very good.

I don't consider any of these guys serious prospects
though Smolinski and Dean both have something about them that is intriguing. Dean put up great numbers in the NYP and is pretty athletic and projectable. Smolinski held his own offensively in the SAL, which is not a bad thing to say about a 2B/3B in his first full year of pro ball.

this package
would perhaps make sense for one of the two, but for both? this is ridiculous.

Bonifacio
Wasn’t he the guy dealt to the Nats in the Rauch deal. I thought he was supposed to be super speedy, but with a questionable bat. I believe the A’s were interested in him at some point.
by Excel Hearts Choi on Nov 10, 2008 7:19 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, that's him.
Kinda a bleh package for Florida. I mean, Olsen is a pretty bleh pitcher, but he might be well suited for Washington. Willingham, though, is pretty good. Bonifacio has a questionable bat, although Dean has posted some nice numbers in short-season A ball. All and all, I’m just glad Olsen isn’t a Rangers.

Hopefully this allows us to go after their better pitchers
Assuming they still want a catcher, they can’t insist on us taking Olsen.

what the hell
that’s all the Nats gave up? That is an effin crappy package of prospects. I probably would have game up something similar for Olsen.

hmm, i dunno...
how about Kennil Gomez and German Duran for Scott Olsen.
Forget Willingham.

I think Arias
is the closer comp for Bonifacio. Bonifacio is defense/speed oriented, and Duran might be able to hit. Gomez is a solid comp for Dean, good one.

lol, i just guessed on Gomez
Sounded right at first; looked up their numbers…very similar.
And basically the same age and size.

Speaking of Gomez
Michael Main told me that Gomez is the most exciting arm he has seen who isn’t named Feliz or Holland. Pretty crazy.
Another interesting thing about Gomez is that he can throw in the mid 80s left-handed.

Is it safe to say he’s in full-season ball next season?

Gomez?
Gomez was already in full season ball when his year was cut short due to an injury. If he returns to 100%, there is no doubt he will pitch in full season ball again in ’09.
I think it’s possible that he starts in Hickory and moves to Bakersfield as the year progresses. Of course, all of this depends on his health.
by jparks77 on Nov 11, 2008 9:55 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Silly question
Would he ever be able to employ that LHP delivery during a ML game?
Sort of like Padilla’s 50 MPH lob toss, just to throw ’em for a loop, every now and then.
For instance, if it was 0-2, or 1-2, I would try to throw that mid-80’s LH stuff out of the zone, just to fuck with people.

Citizen Olsen
Remember that time Scott Olsen punched his teammates and kicked those cops.
“…after fleeing from police following a speeding violation. He fled for about a mile, at which point he stopped at his home and sat in a plastic chair in the front yard. When police arrived and tried to arrest him, he kicked at the officers who then used a taser to subdue him”

Hahaha
It’s almost like you can follow his thought process, because it’s so simplistic.
1. Oh shit, cops … run.
2. Fuck it, I’m tired and they’re going to keep coming after me. Oh, my house. Oh, there’s a chair. Fine.
3. Fuck, they’re back already? Hmm, I’ll comply … *KICK * KICK * KICK *. I’m going to jail anyway, might as well make ’em earn the arrest.

I would have paid that for Olsen alone, but getting Willingham makes it a steal for Washington.

I think they went through
the exercise of trying to match up some Marlins pitching with one of those two and just couldn’t find a match – at least so far. I don’t think that this deal does anything to preclude that potentially happening. The Rangers didn’t seem very interested in Olsen, and the Marlins seemed pretty dead set on moving him, regardless of whatever else they were going to do to clear salary.

I wouldnt have been opposed to olsen for a low price
I certainly agree hes far from an ace.. but uh.. our rotation still sucks and im sure various injuries would have opened up plenty of chances for the young guys as they always do. Or if they didnt things might be going alright.
Of course, while Im not celebrating that we didn’t get him.. im not exactly upset either, so whatever.
