Tuesday a.m. stuff
Evan Grant has some notes up this morning about free agents Junichi Tazawa and Dayan Viciedo, and says the Rangers are "monitoring" both situations.
Grant also says he has a crush on Molly Erdman, something he has in common with Ben.
Jeff Wilson has some comments from Jarrod Saltalamacchia, clarifying that he wants to stay in Texas.
That seems to be about it right now.

Salty...
Seems like this is a HUGE off-season for him. In a few ways…

You could say the same thing for any number of players
Brandon McCarthy, Jack Benoit, and BGL come to mind.

True
It would be nice to see all of those players take a step forward.

Payroll
So Grant thinks the Rangers have about $6 to $7 million to use this offseason. Previous to this estimate, Grant says that the Rangers need to let Bradley go, trade Blalock, or trade Cat if they are to make a serious offer (around $7 million) for Tazawa.
I am not understanding this too well. If the Rangers have $6 or $7 million to spend, why do they need to trade or not resign a player in order to make a $7 million offer to a Japanese pitcher? Am I to understand this as the initial $6 or $7 million is to be earmarked for free agent relief pitchers?

I think
He’s speculating that the Rangers want to potentially sign a 3bmen (like Crede) and/or a RP, which they wouldn’t be able to do if they exhaust their budget-room on one starter. Plus, signing Bradley clearly puts them over their expected budget.

Casey Blake
I guessing the Rangers make a run at Casey Blake to play 3B. He’ll probably want a 3 year deal but the Rangers might be able to talk him into a 2 year with a vesting option for the 3rd one.
Signature! I don't need no stinking signature!!

3B
one year players is all we should be looking for
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

I think two is viable
I’d like to give Andrus as much of 2010 as he needs.

I'll give you that
But I think its more likely MY moves to 3B before the season rather than midseason. Which means either start of 2010 or start of 2011. I don’t want to keep Andrus down until 2011 personally.

from the boston globe:
Texas Rangers. The Rangers need pitching and have catching to deal, which makes them the ideal trade partner for the Sox on this year’s market. Quite simply, there is no better fit. Texas has four catchers on its 40-man roster – Gerald Laird, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Taylor Teagarden and Max Ramirez – and one major league evaluator recently suggested that the Rangers would be willing to deal two of them (so long as Ramirez is one of the two).
That leaves Laird, Teagarden, and Saltalamacchia as the centerpiece of any deal.
Clearly, if the Sox wanted Laird, they could easily get him. The defensively skilled Teagarden (who is also blessed with power) and the hyped Saltalamacchia are more desirable targets that will cost more, though Epstein and his baseball operations staff understand the difficulty in finding good young catching. If the Red Sox ever were to give up a top pitching prospect like Clay Buchholz, Michael Bowden or Justin Masterson – the last is unlikely – this is precisely the kind of deal that would inspire them to do it.
So why hasn’t a deal been struck yet? As every executive likes to say at this time of year, there are a lot of “moving parts.” If the Red Sox can upgrade their offense significantly on the free agent market, they can make a lesser trade (Laird?) and keep their pitching prospects because the rest of their lineup would allow them to carry a mediocre catcher. At the same time, if the Sox lose on someone like Mark Teixeira, the cost for Saltalamacchia or Teagarden could go up.
i found it interesting that he singles out Masterson over Buchholz as the guy they are least likely to deal.

Molly Erdman...
didn’t recognize the name, but the face rings a huge bell…the kind of bell that makes me want to get up and punch the TV whenever those commercials come on.

Camp "survival of the fittest"
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-rangers-ryansinfluence&prov=ap&type=lgns
Three months before spring training, a select group of young and upcoming pitchers is participating this week in a conditioning camp where the message is clear: Every pitcher will have to get stronger and be in better condition.
"We’re going to take the approach that whoever comes out ahead, whoever makes it through, is going to make the team," strength and conditioning coach Jose Vazquez said Tuesday.

CJ wanted to pitch in winter ball? That would be awfully fast and a tall order, no ?
