OT: Thanks Veterans!
To any other fellow Veterans out there, retirees, or if you're currently serving whether it be active duty or national guard/reserves. Thank you very much for your contribution to this great country of ours. It's been a while for myself (12 years) since I finished my term in the US Army, but I personally know the sacrifice it is to leave all of your loved ones behind and from the bottom of my heart I truly thank you.
Happy Veterans Day!

Inane historical fact question
Does anyone know where our military was ranked globally prior to the bombing of pearl harbor in total tonnage?
by Michael Cave on Nov 11, 2008 10:37 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
haha
We were 17th in the world behind Argentina and then within a year (due to mechanizing our economy) we were number one. This is what I get for doing my undergrad history thesis on military theory and history haha. GO USA!! Thank you to everyone that has served and is serving.

6 great years.
I was repairing avionics on B-52s that were flying from Barksdale to Iraq, dropping off 50k lbs. or so of “Fun”, and flying back to the USA without ever touching the ground during the 1st Gulf War.

Lucky guys.
Beautiful plane.
Wow, how random is that! That video was shot at Andy South, it’s the only runway long enough for a B-2/B-52. I spent 2 months a few blocks from where that video was shot…odd.
Oh yeah, also that affair with the Guamanian aerobics instructor…yowza, was she smokin’! :)

Well, not me personally obviously
But my Dad was a Navy Corpsman attached to 3rd Marine Force Recon in ’Nam in ’68. He got detached into the thick of Hue as soon as he got in-country, then spent the rest of his time on the ground doing recon missions and the like until he was badly wounded in an RPG blast. After he recovered from his injury they transferred him to the air wing where he spent the remainder of his tour as a ride-along corpsman in a P-2 Neptune based out of Thailand.
Anyway, just thought I’d brag about him today. He’s still got 6 plates and screws in his back thanks to that RPG – doesn’t like it when I brag about him, but he’s always been a hero to me.

Italy was the best.
We spent 3 years in Aviano. The people were so nice and we had a wonderful landlady who taught us so much. I loved the history and sightseeing (Rome, Venice, Pisa, the Vatican, Naples, Milan). The Air Force had a remote site down in southern Italy where I got to spend an entire summer living in a bungalow on the beach and even got to bring my family. Best summer ever.
The worst was Yemen. Dirty, nasty, scarry shithole. A place where the scum of the earth go to hide.

Happy Vets day to my Dad
He’s 83 and still kicking. He served in the Navy in the duece ( WW2 ). He was on the aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill the day they got hit by a suicide bomber and 360 men died. 4 of his 5 brothers also served and one died in the Battle of the Bulge. My grandmother was never the same.
What a debt we owe to the hundreds of thousands who have served over the last 200+ years. Thank You Vets!

To everyone who has served. And thanks to everyone who takes a moment to show their appreciation. And especially to my brother, who completed a military career and is disabled.
