There is no agreed-upon way to write l33t, so it’s up to you whether or not to go with light l33t, medium 1337, hard |337 or even ultra |33¯|¯. In this entry, ‘l33t’ is used except when referring to medium, hard or ultra ‘1337’.

Family Guy for me
Simpsons is great, but Family Guy is amazing. There is nothing out there that will make me laugh that hard even if the episode isn’t one of the best ones. The Simpsons just doesn’t do that.
South Park is no longer on the same level as those guys. They’ve gone from jokes with some hilarious plots to just being preachy.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
this poll is biased based on nostalgia
if you showed an episode to someone who had never heard of either of them, I would GUARANTEE they would laugh longer, harder, and more often at Family Guy.
This poll is like asking a 40-year old if he’d rather marry Lynda Carter or Jessica Alba. Sure, some of them will say they’d marry Jessica Alba, but most of them will resort to their own memories of puberty and who was prominently involved at the time. Lynda Carter was hot THEN, and despite the fact that she probably is not now, they would probably have such vivid memories of her THEN that they would overlook how much hotter Alba is than Carter now. (Carter/Alba are just examples – feel free to use your own).
Yes, I grew up on the Simpsons. I initially refused to watch Family Guy, but as I did, it has taken over that soft spot in my heart I used to hold for the Simpsons. The Simpsons, by comparison, blows, and this is coming from someone who has seen almost every episode of both shows (I say “almost” because I’ve stopped watching the Simpsons). I suspect that most Simpsons fans who grew up on the show would not be as open to the Family Guy (again, I myself refused to watch it for a long time), thus skewing the poll results from what in reality is the better show.
Greatest Inventions Ever? 1. TiVO, 2. Boobs, 3. Baseball
I disagree.
Take an episode like King Sized Homer or Maximum Homerdrive or Homer to the Max or Bart Versus Australia or You Only Move Twice or one of the other classics and I think you’d find that the Simpsons can still hold its own.
And just because new episodes of the show are better (which is true… new episodes of FG are better than new Simpsons) doesn’t mean that the show itself as a whole is better.
Seasons 3-11 of the Simpsons are pure greatness.

Amen.
Exactly my point. Not only do the Simpsons have longevity, but there was a time there (I’d say season 4-11, but that’s not the point) where it every single episode was gold. You can’t discount that.
And while I don’t share AJM’s vitriol towards Family Guy (I think it’s alright), I would argue that every Family Guy episode is essentially the same.
"One man, five scoops." -- shroomer
I think since American Dad came out
the quality of Family Guy episodes has gone down. But I was a fan of the show when it first aired and still watch those episodes now on DVD or Adult Swim. To me, each one of those episodes are still gold. With the Simpsons, I just can’t find myself watching the same episodes and still laughing that hard at the same jokes. I still enjoy the episode, but its not the same for me.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

i can't believe South Park is still around btw
not because it’s a bad show but because I can’t believe that anyone watches Comedy Central. I can’t even tell you what channel it is on DirecTV.
While I admit I sought out the South Park episodes that I had heard about (World of Warcraft, parent chili, Guitar Queer-o, etc.), I don’t think I’ve ever even thought about making sure I’m TiVO’ing it.

I don't like either
I used to like the Simpsons, but their time has come and gone – I’m not sure exactly when they jumped the shark, but it had to be eight or nine years ago.
I can’t bear to watch Family Guy. First, talking babies freak me out. Seriously – I can’t stand talking babies. Secondly, I think the type of focus of their humor just annoys me – its like they took the annoying aspects of the Simpsons and amplified it. I can see why lots of people like it – I don’t though. To me, South Park is far more topically relevant and in its own way actually insightful.
Hit the nail on the head.
Family Guy has to be edgy.
South Park has to be edgy.
The Simpsons never had to.
GREINKE HO!!!!!
Seriously, would you care to expand?
Because if that is one of the dumbest things you’ve ever read, then I pity you.

Saying the Simpsons never had to be edgy
is retarded. Why do you think the show started out as such a huge thing? You think it was because people were shocked that everyone was yellow?
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
exactly
it was because there was a kid that would say “eat my shorts” and a father who would choke him openly.
The Simpsons had to be just as edgy…it’s just that, in retrospect, the edge has moved over the years to the point where the Simpsons don’t even come close to the current “edge”, making it appear that they don’t need to be edgy.
Greatest Inventions Ever? 1. TiVO, 2. Boobs, 3. Baseball
I disagree.
I think the fact that it was the first show of it’s kind… an animated, prime-time show about middle-class American family… was what made it appealing. Not the fact that it was “edgy.”
Obviously, the writing progressed and the envelope got pushed a little further… with each season that followed.
But, I still think the central theme with The Simpsons (in the early days, anyway) was about the family, and their everyday life struggles.
It wasn’t about trying to net the most laughs… which I think Family Guy and South Park try to do.
I don’t know why you would think that’s the dumbest opinion you’ve ever heard.
GREINKE HO!!!!!
yeah
I’m sure that a comedy cartoon never tried to be funny. Its amazing how much the Simpsons is being idolized by some here.

The Simpsons is just something I keep around out of habit, I really rarely enjoy the new episodes, although I love a lot of the classics.
Family Guy is extremely hit or miss, and it’s generally about 75% miss.
To me, the two funniest Sunday night shows on Fox are King of the Hill and American Dad, and it’s generally not even close… and it freaking blows that KOTH is ending.

agree with Simpsons seasons 2-8.
old school Simpsons was way more clever than Family Guy has ever been. So Simpsons has to get the vote. Unfortunately Family Guy is better now because the Simpsons have just tried to hang on way too long, like Brett Favre not wanting to retire (even though he is still decent). I wish they would just end it. I hope they bring back some of the old writers, like Conan O Brien, for the final episode. and it ’s Jebus

cut off at 10 for no reason. season 11 is way funnier than 10

You're right there is no reason for the cut off
I typically watch seasons 3-9 nowadays. I stopped watching regularly around season 10. Not stopped entirely, but just started doing other things on Sunday night instead and caught syndication. I’m sure 11 is funny. The cutoff is just my own thing.
"Relying on the government to protect your privacy is like asking a peeping tom to install your window blinds."
youre right 9 should have been included
season 10 is when the decline started. there were still some good episodes every now and then for the next few years though.
This question would have a lot more relevance 5 years ago
It is obviously The Simpsons, although I think they jumped the shark a few years back. And I’d like to take this opportunity to say some of you creep me out a little with your savant-like ability to quote every episode from 1994 verbatim.
Right now, though, I think it is pretty clear that South Park is the only one with any juice left.

Robot Chicken is fairly funny. My favorite current Adult Swim show, however, is the incredibly awesome Metalocalypse. It probably doesn’t hurt that I used to be really into death metal, so I get a lot of the inside jokes…

death metal. Are you talking like Necrophagist or Decapitated?
"Relying on the government to protect your privacy is like asking a peeping tom to install your window blinds."
Death metal
I guess if I’m going to be correct, I should probably say I was into grindcore- Carcass and Napalm Death, in particular.
I was also into really into Godflesh (not really grindcore or death metal, but had a lot of the same roots), Obituary, Pitchshifter (early stuff- their later stuff sucks), Entombed, and Sepultura. Some of that’s probably more properly classed as thrash or speed metal.

I’ve listened to some Napalm Death and Entombed. Good stuff.

AHEM
The year was 1999. A year where Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Owen Wilson were not huge stars. That year also saw a failed TV show which, directed by Stiller was just a one episode pilot in which Jack Black was the smartest man alive and who fought crime with the aid of his trusty motorcycle. This was no ordinary motorcycle, you see, as it had been imbibed with the spirit of his dead roommate, voiced by Owen Wilson.
That pilot was called Heat Vision and Jack

My opinion on these
is that they’re generally hilarious for the first few seasons, and then their bits become incredibly tired. I loved the first three seasons of Sealab 2021 (before Murphy’s original VA died). Same with Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
I don’t regularly watch Robot Chicken, but I’ve seen a good number of episodes because a few of my close friends love it. I don’t really think you can lump it in with the others because its segments range from very short (five seconds or less) on up. Many segments in the episode make me think “WTF?”, or just roll my eyes, but because of the nature of the show, it doesn’t really effect a hilarious segment later on in the episode.

Family Guy is funny, but since I am only 22, I hardly get all of the references to old television shows and movies. It is very funny at times, but the more recent episodes have been pretty stupid. Also, the cutouts are funny, but there is no continuity. Recent episodes seem to have moved away from funny character development and have more shock humor.
Simpsons is of course classic, but I think less funny than both Family Guy and American Dad.
And psh, American Dad is awesome. It has much better story lines than Family Guy, the characters are every bit as funny. Oh and it doesn’t have any character as annoying as Chris on Family Guy. I swear, Chris is the most annoying character on any show, ever.

The show started out rough, but from… probably the middle of the first season onwards, it hit a stride and is consistently the funnier Seth McFarlane show, and realistically, some of the best Sunday programming period, that being said, it’s not hard to beat recent Simpsons stuff, for the most part.
I’d take Lincoln Lover, Irregarding Steve, Bush Comes to Dinner, Meter Made, and Tearjerker over any 5 Simpsons or Family Guy episodes over the last 3 years.
I cannot choose between the two.
They’re both funny. There’s no question that Family guy rips The Simpsons off a little. But the humor is pretty clever if not very cerebral. The characters in The Simpsons are funnier.
But to all the people who think Family Guy sucks:
1. Chicken Fight
2. Peter’s theme music
No matter who you are, you couldn’t watch either without laughing.
The first chicken fight was so awesome!!!
Also the entire Willy Wonka rip-off was amazing.

Greatness, but even better was...

now
its family guy, the simpsons has been going down hill for 10 years and now is complete garbage, but from about 91-97 it was greatness. much better than family.
I'd say
Seth lost his touch a short time after Family Guy came back. The first three seasons were pretty good, parts of the fourth season were good (episodes such as PTV), the movie was decent and after that, it seemed like the episodes were kinda meh. A lot of the stuff seemed to be taking shots at others, rather than original material. The idea of the non-sequitur cutaways was a nice concept, but managed to grow old.
Simpsons hasn’t been particularly good since the turn of the millenium, but the old ones were amazing.
The reason I say Simpsons
is because Family Guy has some pretty random flashbacks. I’m not saying they’re not funny, its just some of them make absolutely no sense at all.

A few others have said this as well...
I liked Family Guy in its original series run, before Fox canceled it. Granted, I haven’t watched those episodes since they aired, but there you go. The Simpsons is a landmark TV show.
At some point, The Simpsons writers either ran out of stories for the characters’ archetypes, or became stopped trying to write for the characters’ archetypes. I really think this happened right around the time Futurama hit its stride. Futurama rides the fence between Family Guy’s consistent absurdity and The Simpsons’ archetypal character writing.
My biggest problem with the current run of Simpsons episodes is that the series started out quite realistically. Even in the later good seasons (say, seven on to whenever it jumped the shark), the stories revolved around characters playing themselves, albeit in increasingly unrealistic situations. I caught part of this past week’s Simpsons episode, which included Ned and Homer running around Springfield like characters from mythical Chinese martial arts movies. Really?
A few people mentioned that Family Guy really started heading downhill while American Dad was starting up. Groening started Futurama in 1999 and it was canceled in 2003, which (to my tastes) corresponds to The Simpsons decline in quality. This makes me wonder if it isn’t too much of a creative strain on the writers to have two similar series going at once.
I'm very surprised...
Family Guy has more votes than the Simpsons. I’m a South Park guy personally, but I grew up watching the Simpons and really liked it when I was a teenager. I voted for it for that reason alone. Family Guy isn’t bad, but it’s not in the same league as the Simpsons.

Family Guy
I’m a total fan of randomness, so that show really speaks to me and makes me laugh a lot. But I really love the Simpsons. Even the episodes coming on now are funnier than most of what’s on TV.
That said, I couldn’t vote for one or the other. They both make me laugh. The most important show is The Simpsons. It’s already in the history books. They’re not in the same league, no. But they’re both funny!
