OT:  Television

Three questions for you guys to answer.  This is somewhat inspired by the ongoing Family Guy / Simpsons debate.

1.  Name 2 shows that you absolutely will not miss right now.

2.  Name 2 shows that your friends watch that you absolutely do not understand the appeal of.

3.  Name 1 show that you watch that more people should watch.

Here are mine:

1.  The Shield and 30 Rock.

2.  Family Guy and Heroes.

3.  Top Gear (UK).

Dexter

Dexter Is on my list, but this new season has been boring me. I’d list the handful of annoying plot points but don’t want to spoil it.

Season 1 great. Season 2 maybe even better.

funny because i thought season 2 was a little bit of a let down.
so far i’m enjoying this season.

too hard to pick just 2.. thus extra info.

1. Lost and House
2. Eh I dunno. Saying reality tv is just too easy =p
3. Life, an nbc crime show. Not because its amazing, just because the main actor is very good, the show is pretty good, and ive never talked to anyone who has seen an episode.

here is my DVR’s season subscription list, pretty generic: lost, house, entourage, life, prison break, my own worst enemy, pushing daisies, the venture brothers, mythbusters, the office, 30 rock, colbert report + some sports things.

heroes is still on there but I havn’t watched it since the first 2 episodes of this season, pretty sure im just going to delete all the episodes on there.

i usually watch family guy on hulu.com for some reason at random intervals.

looking at what people have listed.. i really want to watch dexter and the shield but i never run by the channels that have them so i just never picked up on them. should probably buy the dvds. but obviously im watching enough tv as is =p

the preceding post was a great success.

I also watch too much TV :(

My old friend on Sons of Anarchy’s real name is Taylor Gibler.

His stage name is Taylor Sheridan.

Can’t you just picture the conversation with his agent:

Yeah. Umm. Well, the thing is, we were thinking that your last name kind of…umm…how should I put this…makes people conjure indelible images of turkey guts…and…consequently, we were wondering if maybe, and we suggest this with all due respect, and the purest of motivations, you might be open to considering changing your family moniker to something…shall we say…just a wee bit less nausea-inducing…?

No offense.

My favorite part of that show

was how when it looked like the show was getting canceled they ended season one with the escape not working out and them all being captured and with the love interest proclaimed dead by paramedics, but then when they got brought back for a second season they just expected you to take a dumb pill and accept that, “No, what are you talking about, they got away” and that “Oh, the paramedics must have made a mistake or something… she was still like only a little dead and they, erm, brought her back to life or something”. They didn’t even offer any explanations. They just went on about their business. I know a dead love interest when I see one, Prison Break!!!

heh I take it you didnt watch season 3

because if you think they killed her off and brought her back in between season 1 and season 2, you havnt seen anything.

spoliers 0.o
the actor left the show for season 3, so they had her killed by being decapitated as punishment for trying to rescue them. linc sees her head in a box. then when the actress apparently wants to come back for season 4 they say that she actually escaped (and then made contact with noone for some reason) and the villain staged her death to cover up her escape, and all linc saw was A head and didnt get a good enough look to identify her (even though he was alone and could have gotten as good a look as he wanted and seen it wasnt her at the time).

but anyway season 1 didnt end with them captured.. they were still being chased. i think police were right behind them and in reality they would have been caught, but they wernt actually in handcuffs or anything. I think they just kind of teleported them a little farther away from the police to start season 2, cant remember exactly.

i dont remember how they ended sarah.. but wasnt it just some drug overdose.. not really 100% dead. now obviously it takes leaps of faith and logic, and the show continues to do so constantly and is really a pretty silly show all around in that way, but it wasnt anything definite.

prison break has almost lost me at various points but always gets decent again just in time to keep me watching.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DSheppard on Nov 12, 2008 8:11 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You're correct that they weren't totally captured.

The plane took off without them and they were totally boxed in by about 500 cops, but you’re right that I guess they could have made it away on foot. I mean… There’s no way, but at least you’re right that they weren’t like in handcuffs or anything.

But, iirc, the chick was actually dead. The paramedics showed up, one of them took her pulse and then looked at the other guy and shook his head, followed by them pulling a sheet over her head. She was DEAD, man. Then they brought her back. I watched the season 2 premier all the way through hoping for an explanation and when I didn’t get one I stopped watching, which wasn’t a big deal cause the show was only mildly entertaining. It was just something I had netflicked and sort half gotten into.

I think they hyped Fringe up a little too much myself

It’s a good show, one of the few I have to catch every week right now… but they haven’t really done a good enough job of developing the major plot lines, (like the underlying conspiracy that we keep being told is there, but still know nothing about.)

My picks

1. Hard to pick just two, but I’d go with The Shield and Dexter, just in terms of the ones I look most forward to each week.

2. American Idol

3. Sons of Anarchy

Others I highly recommend: True Blood, Sarah Connor Chronicles, Pushing Daisies, Damages

Any of those could have substituted for my two picks in #1, along with SOA, which has just gotten better and better each week. There have been some Shield crossovers as well- Jay Karnes (Dutch) plays an ATF agent, and Kurt Sutter (Margos Dezerian, the Armenian hitman from Season 3) is the show’s creator.

Other shows I watch: CSI, CSI Miami, Law & Order SVU, Heroes, Dirty Sexy Money, Fringe

Fringe hasn’t really grabbed me, but there’s nothing else on in that time slot, so I’ll give it a few more weeks. Heroes stil has a lot of problems, but it’s been better this season. CSI Miami is simply a guilty pleasure- I freely admit it’s an awful show.

That show is addictive

I had virtually no interest in when they were hyping it this summer. I gave it a shot strictly b/c of Alan Ball.

But you have to have watched it from the beginning. I was watching Sunday’s episode last night and it struck me that I would have changed the channel with an eye roll in about 10 minutes if I didn’t have all the prologue. But I am hooked.

And the theme song is perfect, too.

I’m so geeky for Stella I don a fake mustache for one day of every class I teach. Hell, I even wore one when I presented a paper at a conference earlier this year—to demonstrate a point I was making, mind you.

Stella was hilarious.

It definitely has a niche audience (i think it’s the same people who liked shows like Strangers With Candy), but that is a show I can watch over and over with the same amount of laughter.

Yeah...

I could probably write an angry worded thesis about how badly FOX fucked up handling that show. Now, it’s easy to say that it could very well have never gotten a large enough audience to justify its expensive budget. However, FOX screwed up in every way imaginable in getting that show the audience it deserved and really gave it no chance.

It was greatness in the making.

1) Rescue Me and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia

Phoebe and Ross were the worst characters on that show. Phoebe literally added nothing and Ross was annoying most of the time. Joey, Chandler and Monica were all funny. I think...

that the show is about a familial closeness that many of us wish we had but don’t, coupled with a dysfunction that many of us find all too familiar. In that way, it was relatable, with a quirky setting that was somewhat endearing and a gimmicky dramatic element (the dead people opening) that could be cloying at times. And it was a little too in-your-face with the manlove.

I'm sure

You’re right about that, to be perfectly honest.

But the difference, I think, is that I can acknowledge that and not be pissed off at you. Any mention of your flaws and you immediately label me some young doe-eye with no basis for having an opinion.

That’s to say nothing of the fact that when you did respond to anything I had to say, it was some smarmy personal attack bit.

I’d love to have substantive debates with you. You’re not interested because I’ve hurt your feelings, and that, to me, is worse than any image problems I may have.

No...

it’s not that I’m uninterested because you’ve hurt my feelings, because you haven’t. I’m uninterested because you are incapable of carrying on a discussion in a rational way. You invariably go into petulant child mode.

And, yes, your youth and inexperience are a factor. I’m sorry, but that’s the case.

I’ve chosen not to discuss things with you, and you’ve responded by replying “dumbshit” and “shut up” and other very mature things. And I’m in the wrong for pointing out your immaturity?

But wake up friend: you’re not old. You’re 30. There are pieces of dogshit outside my apartment right now that are older than you.

I know you love to rub my face in it, but it doesn’t stick.

And it seems odd to me that I’m able to carry on rational discussions with so many other people here without going into some childish petulant mode. Maybe it’s you. Maybe not. I don’t really care. You can keep ignoring me if that suits your fancy. I’ll continue on in my way, as well.

Am I the only one who thinks she's the worst actress on the show?

I was really excited they got a name actress to headline the show, but I just can’t dig her acting at all. Still love the show and all, but she’s outclassed.

The gay hustler cook drug dealer guy is my favorite.

Oh, and Eric the vampire sheriff of sector 5 (or whatever) is pretty sweet, too. Though I think that’s still lingering man love from his excellent role in Generation Kill.

I think she kind of sucks in this role and haven’t been overly impressed with her in any of the other shit she’s done as an “adult”.

Her accent pisses me off and she adds no depth to the role, imo.

But it’s not like she’s a show ruiner or anything.

And another person mentioned Mad Men.. This show, while predating me is absolutely wonderful. The characters and everything that surrounds them is captivating.. if you arent watching it, rent the 1st season tonight

I don't watch network television

1. Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares (BBC version) and Iron Chef America
2. Everything out there. I’ve never seen any portion of Lost, House, etc.
3. America’s Test Kitchen on PBS.

As I’ve bitched about this before, but when I switched to DirecTV for the baseball package, they promised local channels but lied. So I don’t watch ABC/CBS/NBC/FOX and I don’t really miss it (I’ll hook up rabbit ears if some sports event is on the Girl and I want to watch). All we really watch are sports, cooking shows, Daily News/Colbert, reruns of Seinfeld, the Office, Family Guy.

Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

Here's the thing

It’s actually informative. If you watch any show on Food Network, it takes about 2 episodes before someone invariably explains what a chiffonade or roux is (over and over). Look, I know what that crap is – tell me something I don’t know. Americas Test Kitchen is cool because it doesn’t just tell you how to do things, but how to do them better (and I like the equipment corner).

This all came out really gay, huh?

There is a lot of good tv on this fall

So much so that my netflix queue has been pretty lonely.

1. Entourage, The Shield, Mad Men (season 2 has been a letdown, but please people, no spoilers, I have 2 episodes left), Its Always Sunny.
2. Almost all reality tv, and espec. Idol & Dancing w/ Stars, 24, House, and most of the crapola on Network TV.
3. Californication, Masterminds, Frontline, True Blood, Sons of Anarchy, Gangland, My Boys. But emphatically Californication. It’s as good as anything on TV.

Oh, and my old high school drama buddy has a supporting role on SOA. He’s the reform-minded, young upstarty, so tight he squeaks when he walks deputy sheriff. The writers don’t give him a lot to work with, unfortunately. Pretty cliched character.

Oh, and I’m not a fan of PD. No surprise it’s getting canceled. I always appreciated what they were trying to do, but never enjoyed a single episode. The whole thing just smacked of effort. Sucks for Lee Pace especially. He was the shit as the brother on Wonderfalls.
