Thursday a.m. stuff
Let's see...
Jim Reeves has a column up on the conditioning program for pitchers, although a lot of the column is of the "back in the old days, pitchers pitched complete games and didn't touch a baseball in the offseason until February because they had real jobs in the winter" variety...
And that's about it, it appears, this morning...

Peavy
Really underwhelming if this is true…

Go Strangers.
Escobar and Hernandez
They are both pretty good.

Do you prefer this package to Matt LaPorta?
Actually the first thing comes to mind is your original idea, which of course included the contract extension. This is not comparable. If Peavy’s true value is “ace”-level, all you can assume is the no-trade made the bidding totally sideways.

seriously?
they are both solid ballplayers, but this is a guy who people suggested we should empty our farm for. the key thing to me is they AREN’T PITCHERS. I admit we don’t have a direct comp to Escobar, although Andrus could be there after next season, and I think Borbon is probably ahead of Gorkys. so let’s say that evens out.
Then look at the pitching in the deal. Blaine Boyer?!?! The article insinuates the most positive thing about him is his durability, noting his number of appearances. I would say Josh Rupe would trump him, easily. And then Charlie Morton?!?! He was a nobody until a strong winter league appearance in 2007 and a strong start in AAA in 2008, but then he got rocked in the bigs as a 24-25 y/o. Tommy Hunter would easily trump him.
So, for a package of Andrus, Borbon, Rupe, and Tommy Hunter, we could have landed one of the best pitchers in baseball.
Peavy
one thing you have to consider is his no trade clause. that likely diminished the return a great deal because he has to agree to waive that clause which ruled out the rangers and probably other teams with a strong farm system.
all in all this isnt a steal for the padres but i’d bet its the best offer they got for a team peavy was willing to go to.
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
exactly
that no trade clause killed them. early on a report floated around that said the Padres received a strong offer that was killed after Peavy vetoed it. I would put strong money on that being an offer from the Rangers, and I would put stronger money on that offer, when compared to this offer, making Kevin Towers a sad panda.
Players Working
I remember an HBO thing about A-Rod years ago where he went and had dinner with, I believe, Willie Mays, and they were talking about baseball and whatnot, and it being the offseason, A-Rod asked Mays what sort of conditioning he did in the off season. Mays was like, “What did I do in the winter? I worked.”
Brandon McCarthy
This conditioning camp sounds like it is mostly lower body, so why in the hell does McCarthy’s hurt finger keeping him from participating? I keep hoping that McCarthy will turn things around because I hate envisioning Kevin Williams reenacting “Deliverance” on Jon Daniels, but I am afraid McCarthy’s vaginitus will ultimately prove too strong for our collective hopes and prayers.
“Squeal like a pig, Jon, squeal like a pig!”
Add one more thing to the list:
“I can’t explain how guys would come into spring training and play themselves into shape and be able to do what they did,” Daniels said.
Smile when you call me Beat Weed!
I couldn't miss out on this
The Danks deal is turning out to be so much worse than the Chris Young deal, in large part because we only had to watch Eaton alternate between sucking and sitting on the DL for 1 year – with McCarthy, we are going to be stuck watching and reading about this shit for God-only-knows how long.
And this line cracked me up, but it also sucks that the media is picking up my schtick as McCarthy. It was more fun before everybody started doing it.
Brandon McCarthy was expected to join the group sometime this week … oops, this just in, McCarthy hurt his arm lifting a glass of red wine during his recent trip to Europe and will be sidelined for at least the first three months next season.
Just kidding. I hope.
I don't hate everything. In fact, I think LSB is just groovy.
