Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

OT: Music

In the spirit of LiamP's brilliant idea for a FanPost, I figured that maybe we could switch the focus from TV to music.

Using the blueprint laid out by our good friend Liam, here are the questions:

1.  Name 2 bands/groups/artists that you absolutely cannot live without.

2.  Name 2 bands/groups/artists that your friends listen to that you absolutely do not understand the appeal of.

3.  Name 1 band/group/artist that you watch that more people should listen to.

See what I did there? I just changed the words. If it ain't broke...

Here's my answers:

1. Ben Folds Five (notsomuch Ben Folds the solo artist) and Kanye West

2. Linkin Park and Eminem

3. Ray LaMontagne (if you're in a chill kind of mood)

I read that they wrote Jeremy

about a kid from Richardson High School who killed himself in front of his class. I knew it was a dark song, but didn’t know it was about something that happened 5 minutes from me.

Pearl Jam is a really good band

I think, anyway. Their worst record may have been their first one, although I haven’t listened to everything they’ve done since. My favorite one is Vs. Yield was okay, and the last record they put out was good too.

They don’t get any airplay on commercial radio because they don’t play the game. I heard them ONCE on Sirius Left of Center. Once. So I guess they’re not hip anymore but they’re still good.

by Black Francis on Nov 13, 2008 5:40 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Go see them live

They haven’t been to Dallas since 03, but they put on an incredible show. I’ve seen them 6 times since that Dallas show, going to 4 different states. They literally play their entire catalog in addition to about 20 covers. They never play the same setlist twice so each night is a unique experience. Plus, you’ve got Matt Cameron on drums since 98 who is probably my favorite drummer (Not best, just personal favorite).

I am the motherfucking shore patrol, motherfucker! I am the motherfucking shore patrol! Give this man a beer.

Minus the Bear...

is awesome. Not only because Highly Refined Pirates is one of my favorite recent albums, not only because “Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse” and “Get Me Naked 2: Electric Boogaloo” were like anthems for the middle of this decade for me, but mostly because they named their songs things like “Monkey!!! Knife!!! Fight!!!” and “Thanks for the Killer Game of Crisco Twister”.

by ghostofErikThompson on Nov 13, 2008 3:23 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Have you listened to their newer cds?

Menos el Oso & Planet of Ice? Those have some good jams too, although Highly Refined Pirates is my favorite.

They did a 3 song encore after playing for over 90 minutes, and closed with Absinthe Party. It’s one of my favorite songs ever.

Sugar

That was the band that started my conversion from metalhead to alt-rock fan- I had no idea that alternative bands could rock out until a friend turned me on to Sugar.

I still like my alternative music fairly heavy (Tool, Isis, Pelican, Jesu, Toadies) but I also listen to a lot of spacy and beat-driven artists as well, like Bjork, Massive Attack, Portishead, and Sigur Ros.

I’ve also been known to listen to some old-school rap, particularly Public Enemy.

...and

…I said that as a person who knew Todd and Lisa back in the day. Played basketball with them and went to Fort Worth Fire games with them. I like Toadies and especially loved their live shows. Best thing they ever recorded was a short EP called “Y’r Cute”. They were branching off but got into record deal turmoil.

And I’m not afraid to admit here that I like a few Coldplay songs. Derivative isn’t necessarily bad if you’re good at it and put your own ideas into it.

I think Todd is the only one left

Original guitar player left a long, long time ago. Didn’t know him that well anyway. Todd’s kind of a weird guy. He could get in some dark moods. Lisa’s no longer with them, I read. They have a new record coming out that’s supposed to be good, but I haven’t heard it.

by Black Francis on Nov 13, 2008 11:12 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Toadies/Pixies

I’ve heard a lot of comparisons between the two. I will admit to not having listened to a lot of Pixies stuff, but what I have heard didn’t really grab me.

I have a couple Toadies stories as well- Lisa used to work with my roommate, who played guitar in a local band called Elysian Fields. I only met her a couple times, but she seemed pretty nice. I also got high once with Mark Reznicek after a Shudder to Think show…

Boards of Canada is (are?) really chill.

Great reading/relaxing music.

But Sigur Ros… I really enjoy certain songs, but I always get the feeling that they should be better than they are, if that makes any sense. I always end up being frustrated when I listen to them cause it should be a masterpiece but instead it’s just kind of pretty good. Or something. It makes sense when I think it in my head brain anyhow.

See them live.

Sigur Ros and Radiohead are hands down the best live bands I’ve witnessed. I dragged a couple of friends (who weren’t rabid Sigur Ros fans by any stretch of the imagination) with me to the Bass Hall show the last time Sigur Ros rolled into town for the Takk tour. Both of them left begrudgingly admitting that it was the best gig they had been to in a long ass time.

Caught Radiohead

in Vancouver a few months ago on the University of British Columbia campus. It was about 64 degrees and somewhere between a drizzle and a light rain the entire show, which was nice because I’d bought some nice herbals from an urban shaman earlier in the day. For the encore, which was Paranoid Android obv, the sky opened up. “Rain down on me”. Unreal. Of course I was pretty high, adding to the overall effectiveness of the coincidence, but WOW. Great show.

PRE-fuckin-CISELY amigo.

I pretty much only read to BOC, I can’t handle anything with lyrics while I’m trying to digest other words. I’ve tried Sigur Ros and Gotan Project to see if a foreign language is any better, but Icelandic is so foreign it interests me and Spanish is so familiar I strive to figure out what they are saying. BOC is nice and chill, no words, just music. Love it.

Check out Gotan Project, too. It’s electronic tango music from Argentina, really smooth sounding. My Spanish teacher is an uber babe from Buenos Aires and she turned me on (to them)

U2 Hatred

You guys aren’t talking about old U2, are you? Like Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum era stuff? To each their own, but I don’t see how anybody could not like their 80’s stuff. That said, I could barely get into that record with “The Fly” on it and everything else after that is pretty underwhelming as far as I’m concerned.

But when they recorded those tracks in Memphis for Rattle and Hum…that was a Rock n Roll band right there.

One of my favorite tracks, of all time, from any band. Holy God is that a good song.

But No Cars Go? Really? That’s your favorite from Neon Bible? Huh.

by FuturePants on Nov 13, 2008 4:31 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No, it's not my favorite...

I was asking because I have noticed that Rebellion (Lies) and No Cars Go were to two songs that my non-Arcade Fire fanatic friends always respond to the most.

My favorites off of Neon Bible was Intervention and My Body Is a Cage.

by ghostofErikThompson on Nov 13, 2008 6:08 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not my fave either, but it's a darn good song, and you're right that it's prolly the poppiest, most easily accessible song on the record.

Honestly it’s gotten to the point where I have an instant distrust of anyone who says that Arcade Fire isn’t one of their most very favorite bands.

I can’t help myself.

I swore I’d never be one of those hipster douches who judges people by their choice in music, but if you’re not down with the Arcade Fire there has to be something deeply wrong with you and I don’t want to hang out with you cause you probably molest kittens or enjoy sucker punching the elderly or something equally nefarious.

Yeah...

This will sound really pretentious but I honestly think Arcade Fire has a good chance of being THAT band for our generation. That one band that just continues to put out unbelievably great music that will stand up years and years from now.

They have a very good chance of really being looked upon fondly far from their time.

They're Good.

And by that I mean very, very, very good but I don’t know that I’d go that far. A lot of it’s not their fault. Indie rock has been relegated to, well, indie rock. The masses have never heard of Arcade Fire. To be a band for a whole generation even jocks and cheerleaders have to at least know who they are.

The music industry has eaten itself.

Well...

that I can agree with that. They can’t exactly be a Beatles, Stones, U2, REM or Springsteen without a lot more people hearing them.

I think though, if they keep putting out albums like their first two they have a chance to breakthrough into that spectrum. I think they are that impressive.

Yah, I've seen it. It's nice. Brings back some memories.

That Ginobili 3 pointer was probably the single most back-breaking moment in my life as a sports fan. I thought it was o.v.e.r.

My reaction at the time was… unpleasant.

Cool video, though.

Although to be fair you could use that song to score a video of Brian Thomas using his thesaurus words to describe how great the boxing scenes are in Million Dollar Baby and it’d probably still make for a good watch. That song is just epic. And, like GOET says, it’s crazy performed live.

Sure, some of that stuff is really good, though it's not anything I go out of my way to listen to or anything.

I’m talking about the stupid overtly-sexual-in-an-unclever-way kind of stuff they play on the popular music station they always have on at the gym.

Ooh girl I’m gonna work you all night looo-aw-ooong! With my genitals, oh, yes-yes GIRL!” It’s never clever at all. The whole appeal of it seems to be that people are talking about having sex. (OMG!)

And there’s never a good rythm or beat and the singer always thinks it’s clever to throw in a little gratuitous voice manipulation to make it “hip”.

I want to hunt down whoever likes those dumb songs and face punch them until they cry.

The Beatles

I’ve tried listening to an album or two. It’s just one of those things that flew over my head.

I’d like to blame my parents for not bringing me up on them, but the truth is, they were never big fans themselves.

My dad had Latin records, Motown, funk, soul… My mom was into Television and the Dolls.

I've never found...

…any substance in any of the Beatles music. Perhaps I’ve been too stubborn to give them a fair shake, but I just don’t understand the love for them.

"Hello win column..."

by rangersfan34 on Nov 13, 2008 5:34 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They were incredible

Threw a lot of convention out the window, and still made it sound great with awesome melody. The lyrics are sometimes a bit cryptic, but they’re good lyrics in most people’s opinion. Lots of talent in that band for sure. And I’d argue that there’s a ton of substance, but not everyone’s going to like them. There are people who don’t even like Johnny Cash. I don’t get that, but whatever.

by Black Francis on Nov 13, 2008 5:37 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Maybe I've never familiarized...

…myself with enough with their music, but I just listen to them and think that so many other bands have had a sound and style that was more my taste. To me, the Beatles just don’t have anything that makes me go “wow, that was a great song…”

I know I’m pretty much alone in this thought process, but I just don’t get their hype and I probably never will…

"Hello win column..."

by rangersfan34 on Nov 13, 2008 6:05 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No substance?

I don’t get that criticism at all. I don’t see how anyone could do anything but meekly say it’s not their thing regarding The Beatles. Anything else is really analogous to bashing Debussy or Beethoven for lack of substance. Just doesn’t make sense.

by brettgardner on Nov 13, 2008 6:02 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't proclaim to know their catalog...

…all that well, so “substance” might have been a poor choice of words. But come on, “We all live in a yellow submarine…” That’s just silly nonsense…

Again, maybe I’m missing something and I should give them another chance, but I really just don’t get the fascination that so many people have for them.

Of course, I’ve also always said that I’d like a song that advocates killing my mom and raping children if it had a beat that I could bob my head to, so take my Beatles criticism with a grain of salt…

:-)

When I hear something like that

It breaks my heart a little.

Yellow Submarine is the worst piece in their catalog, and really just a gimmick. It’s not even remotely representative, so please for the love of all things holy don’t make your judgment based on that song.

How about...

“Strawberry Fields Forever…” Another one that makes zero sense to me as a song of substance and comes off as very gimmicky.

Throw some “good” songs my way – I promise to give them a listen. Maybe I’ve just become warped by the ones I’ve been exposed to the most. Perhaps I’ve missed a great thing and never really realized it…

A word

I’m not a big fan of Fields, but I know lots of people are. For me, it’s hard to contextualize it since I was born nearly 20 years after it was released, but it’s a rather groundbreaking sound. Nobody could touch the combination of orchestration and melody of that song.

A few of the most frequently recommended by others:

A Day in the Life
Dear Prudence
Eleanor Rigby
Across the Universe
the Abbey Road medley

I’d really just say listen to Sgt. Pepper’s and Revolver in their entirety and you’ll be doing yourself a big favor, even if you don’t end up liking it.

Anyway, I heard the story on NPR yesterday. I think the show was The World if you want to find the podcast.

Thanks...

“A Day in the Life” – very cool. I know this song, just never knew the title of it. (That should give you a pretty good idea of how stilted my Beatles knowledge is…) I think of this one as the musical equivalent to Kubrick’s “2001”… Crazy, out there stuff, but in the end you’re left to think, “hey, that’s cool shit…”

“Dear Prudence” – awesome song. Of the five, definitely the closest to the style of music that I care for…

“Eleanor Rigby” – commented below. Solid song.

“Across the Universe” – not my thing at all. Way too mellow.

“Abbey Road medley” – musically it’s very solid, just not something I could listen to over and over. The “Polythene Pam” part does the most for me, but it’s mostly a hodge-podge for me. Nothing terrible, but nothing great either.

Now I just have to make time to listen to “Sgt. Pepper’s” and “Revolver”…

Thanks for the education. Still not a fan, but I have a greater appreciation for them now.

I don’t know if it’s intentional or not, but you’ve got a gift for making some of the largest things (semi-trucks, traffic jams, etc.) come across as miniature versions of reality. (Your “A Fake Day at the Beach” make me think it’s intentional, but that might just be coincidence…) I don’t know how people do what you do with a camera, but you’ve got some skills, my friend…

If the wife didn’t handle the finances, I’d totally lay down some coin for some of your work.

I appreciate that.

Thanks.

Some of the photos you refer to were just long lenses and small apertures. One was with a real tilt-shift lens that I borrowed. Some are done that way in post-processing, but it’s not easy to do it well so I’m glad to hear you like it.

The “Fake Day at the Beach” was a shot of a huge model railroad. I cannot take credit for building the model, but if I had time I would definitely build models and shoot them. I used to do that stuff in college.

I don’t sell my work, but I actually talked to a friend of mine who’s a painter and we’re considering a show for charity. I used to have stuff in galleries pretty often but it’s been a long time and I don’t have much interest anymore. For charity I might, though.

Thanks again.

I would highly recommend listening to

The White Album in its entirety.

I was once like you, too. I didn’t understand how a band who sang “She Loves Me” could be the greatest musical act of all time. Having read your comments, my musical tastes are obviously a lot more calm than yours (I’m a prog rock-era Genesis fan, if that’s any indication of how snotty and obtuse my musical tastes get).

Listening to Rubber Soul made me wonder if I’d missed something. Listening to Revolver and Sgt. Pepper’s made me doubt their greatness, but still respect their place in musical history. Listening to The White Album blew me away. I’ve listened to lots of music in my life, but nowhere near enough to say this as an expert, yet… I cannot fathom an album being more diverse than The White Album. To include the precursors to heavy metal (Helter Skelter) in the same album as a doo-wop sendup (Happiness Is a Warm Gun), along with classics like Revolution 1, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and Blackbird would be an absurdity in modern times.

And none of those tracks come close to the pop-rock suicide that would be Revolution 9.

I guess you could say I’m something of a rabid fan now.

Substance with the Beatles

When I met my wife years ago she said the same thing. When I got her to invest time in them (or, shall we say, she learned that I listen to them and she’d have to deal with it), she grew to love them.

The Beatles took many different forms in those 7 or so years of playing. Personally, I think that all of their forms were amazing. Each album is a masterpiece on its own – the balance of contrast and flow from song-to-song even on the earlier simpler albums is unmatched in most albums by other bands. On later albums, like the White Album and Abbey Road, its just unbelievable. I don’t think you can appreciate “Octopus’s Garden” unless you have just heard “Oh Darling” and are about to hear “I Want You”

The key is you have to listen to the albums. If you just listen to the hits on the oldies stations, you’ll get bored by them. That isn’t to say those hits aren’t good songs – its just that they are hard to appreciate when flanked by the Beach Boys and Diana Ross.

I’m a fanatic, so I’ve listened to all of their recordings, in the order they were released, several times, from Love Me Do on up through Let it Be. I think of album sides instead of single songs, since I first listened to all of the albums on LP.

Appetite for Destruction

Have you ever listened to that record with headphones on? The guitar playing is really remarkable. Very reminiscent of early Aerosmith and sometimes the Stones.

The beginning of the end was when they got that fancy drummer who used to play with The Cult. He was okay with them, but couldn’t do the kind of rock that Guns did.

And when Izzy Stradlin split there was nothing left to salvage. Slash was always a great guitar player but the band was never as good after losing him.

Though, I would say, it is often to discredit the Beatles. The shame of it all, besides the fact that they WERE a gimmick, the Monkees did actually have some talent in that group.

by ghostofErikThompson on Nov 13, 2008 6:15 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think it's because their music is so simplistic

Coldplay copies U2 as well. They love to do entire guitar solos on the B-string like the Edge….granted, the Edge is greatness, but I still don’t like U2.

It’s funny how all the big ‘college’ bands over the years all blew big time for me….U2, Coldplay, Pearl Jam, Counting Crows, and especially, the Dave Matthews Band (the antichrist). If any of those bands’ songs come on the radio, I immediately go into a fetal position.

However, listen to this. The Highwayman. There are four guys that sing one verse each. 1st is Willie Nelson, second is Kris Kristofferson, then Waylon Jennings and finally Johnny Cash.

Honestly, Johnny Cash has the best pitch of all of them (Willie Nelson doesn’t count since I think he just farts around).

Check it...

I was like 7 or 8 years old when I first heard that album.

I was riding shotgun in my dad’s pick-up truck, and we were driving down a deserted highway as the sun was going down.

And we were listening to the title track, and as Johnny Cash’s voice kept fading into the background… where he sings “I’ll be back again… and again… and again.. and again…” … until his voice drowns into the synthesizers…

…Scared the hell out of me…

I know perfectly well why my father put that tape in… for the moment… and that’s one of my first recollections of being moved by music.

Like others said, Johnny Cash gained a lot of popularity after Walk the Line came out which is annoying to others that have liked him far far longer than that. If they listen to Johnny Cash and enjoy it enough to buy it or enough to tell their friends, even if they are posing, it is better than just being closed minded enough to stick with top 40/college rock stuff.

Gotta agree with BG here

Just because annoying people start to think somehting you like is cool means you have to stop listening to it? That’s insane.

The thing about those people – and we all know who they are – is that “what is cool” is random – it isn’t by definition bad. So it’ll eventually overlap with your tastes eventually.

The musical elitest concept

I think people have a natural inclination to want to be the first to “discover” an artist, or to “understand” the music on a level deeper than the inevitable mass appeal.

From my experience… I found a lot more people saying they were Johnny Cash fans after Walk The Line was released than before.

Surprisingly, if you say anything about his work with Rick Rubin or even something as dated as The Highwaymen, you’ll get a lot of blank stares.

I try not to be the elitest I used to be, and I understand the flip-side of the argument… that if the music is good, and touches a lot of people… then it should be appreciated regardless.

But you can’t deny the fact that people like to drop Cash’s name because it’s fashionable to do so.

A lot of people see Cash as a “rebel” when I see him as one of the most distinctive voices in all of music…

GREINKE HO!!!!!

by oc on Nov 14, 2008 12:26 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I guess

I just don’t care what other people think nearly so much.

Whether it’s The Beatles or Miranda Lambert, if people dig something, that should be good enough.

For instance, I know people who are upset that some video game company is releasing an all-Beatles game soon, saying that it will “ruin” them. This is getting out of hand. The Beatles are the most commercial band of all time.

Same with Johnny Cash.

Unless you’re actually the first person to hear an artist, you’re jumping on the bandwagon at some point. You and I weren’t alive in the Sun days to hear the beginning. So we appreciate the artist or music for one reason, and others may appreciate it for others, but I fail to see how one is better than any of the others.

I guess I’m just a guy who doesn’t care about people using names, music, or anything else to fit in or connect with other people. That seems natural to me.
