No Gregg for Texas?
Marlin closer Kevin Gregg was supposedly a possible trade target for the Rangers.
That doesn't look like it is the case anymore, as Ken Rosenthal is reporting that Kevin Gregg has been traded to the Cubs, where he'll be a setup man for Carlos Marmol.
It will be interesting to see what the return for Gregg is, as the package the Marlins got for Scott Olsen and Josh Willingham was rather underwhelming.

Ceda
And that’s a pretty good get for the Marlins. Hes got closer potential and will probably end up at least as a setup man. I’d take Ceda over what they got for Olsen and Willingham.

Gregg
Could this be the Cubs acquiring arms to flip for Peavy. I had heard they were trying to involve a 3rd team to get the pitching SD wanted. With Hoffman leaving could this be the Cubs acquiring a closer to flip for Peavy?
I know about the Atlanta rumor but hadn’t read anything definitive on that yet.

why would the padres
want one year of a solid but not spectacular reliever? The Padres would have presumably valued Ceda well above Gregg. I don’t think the Cubs are in on Peavy that aggressively. Sweet Lou certainly doesn’t think so. I think this is the Braves bidding against themselves, and the Padres whispering about the Cubs to raise the stakes, as I think the Cubs may have moved on (although I have read the Cubs initial offer was better than reported).

I was flipping past UPN or KDFI or some other off-channel
and I happened upon an episode of Walker: Texas Ranger. He was undercover in a prison (as a prisoner, of course), and was listening to his mark talk about his beginnings as a criminal. When the mark was done talking, Chuck Norris looks up and says, “My childhood was fine. I just like to kill.”
I want THAT as my Walker: Texas Ranger ring tone.

When I was in Little League
instead of a trophy one year, we got baseballs signed by Chuck Norris, true story. The badge he wore on Walker was a Dalworthington Gardens badge, which is a little town surrounded by Arlington. One of my coaches was good friends with the DWG chief of police who knew Chuck.
So yeah, I own probably 1 of 15 baseballs in this world signed by the great Chuck Norris.

ESPN Rumblings and Grumbligns
WHAT THEY NEED: Starting pitching. And also starting pitching. In addition to starting pitching.
FREE AGENT WHO COULD TOP THEIR LIST: Ben Sheets.
HOW THEY’LL SHOP: As a team that has opened its very own Catchers “R” Us outlet, the Rangers won’t have to dip into free agency to fill all their pitching needs. They have plenty (of catchers) to trade for at least some of it. But there isn’t any source for arms they won’t investigate. And Sheets, a real-live Dallas native, seems like way too perfect a fit — other than the fact he has made five visits to the disabled list and missed 40 starts over the past four years. If he’ll take a short-term deal, the Rangers figure to charge hard in his direction.
I long for the day when we don’t need pitching.

How about
Signing Sheets for three years and a nice option for a fourth.
Signing Johnson for two years with a nice buyout.
Signing Wood to be a closer. leaving Wilson and Francisco as 8th inning guys.
Trading Padilla to the Mets for Heilman.
Trading Millwood and Laird to the Reds for Bailey.
Then a rotation of Sheets, Johnson, Bailey, Harrison and McCarthy/Feldman.
Just trying to be creative.
I WANT TO WIN IN 09 while staying the course with the kids. C’MON JD YOU CAN DO IT!

Great thoughts
But I don’t think Johnson would come here. He’s screwed us over before. And, I don’t think the Mets would do Padilla for Heilman. I don’t know, for that matter, if the Reds would do the deal you proposed.

Sheets, Buchholz, Milwood, Padilla, Harrison
McCarthy, Feldman, Hurley and Hunter – ready and waiting
even with Jack, Ceej and FX2 closing us down, that’s a staff that – combined with our offense – should win 90+ games.

is unsure if he wants to pitch past 300 wins evidently
which is part of the reason AZ was up in the air about him

You really think..

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 13, 2008 3:23 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Give him a Millwood type contract
with vesting options if he’s healthy (eclipses 170 innings pitched)
by JBImaknee on Nov 13, 2008 3:33 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Good thought
4th year at 17.5 if he pitches 480 innings over the three year contract.
Maybe offer a TWO year option for a 4th (17.5) AND 5th year (20) if he pitches 525 innings in the first three years. (175 a year)

I'd be shocked if he took that

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 13, 2008 3:47 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
This is what you said to me also.
But I don’t understand. How can he expect a 5 year guaranteed deal when he has missed so many starts in the past due to health concerns? I’ve seen some places projecting he signs a 2 year deal (not that I believe them).
Millwood signed a deal that had IP modifiers on it, why wouldn’t Sheets who is much more of an injury risk?
by GhettoBear04 on Nov 13, 2008 3:54 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Sheets might settle for less than we think.
I doubt it, but this alludes to him settling for 2 years potentially.
Again, this would shock me, but if we throw a couple mill on top of the 2 year deal that others are offering, that would be a low-risk bargain.

Compare it to the Schmidt contract and he might.
Schmidt was older, worse at baseball and his medicals were even more dire than Sheets’ from what I can get from the info being passed around.
I think it’s crazy, too.
But never underestimate what people will do for an “ace”, even one with serious medical issues.

I think Schmidt is the reason he won't get that contract.
Darren Dreifort is another example, although, he didn’t even have the track record when he scored that big 5-year $55MM deal to stay in LA.

Adding Sheets, Buchholz and Wood would be a pretty decent winter.
That would be enough to buy some time to let the kids get the AAA experience and possibly help by August or September. Very intriguing.
I think Johnson WOULD entertain coming here for the $10 million he got last year.
At least we know he CAN pitch in the American League. :-0

Sheets, Wood, and Johnson
as FA signings is unrealistic. I’m still not sure Sheets is realistic on his own, but there are some signs that point to it being, at least, a possibility.

I don’t think they will make many more moves. I really can’t imagine why they would want to deal Nolasco at this point, unless they are having serious payroll issues or they are blown away by a huge offer.

Maybe we forget the long-term FA's
Lets just sign Johnson and Wood for the rotation and bullpen, then overpay in a trade for Buchholz and the chips fall where they may!
Rotation in 09: Johnson, Buchholz, Millwood, Padilla and Harrison. Hurley, McCarthy, Hunter and Feldman ready for injuries and spot starts.
Rotation in 2010: Buchholz, Harrison, Hurley, Hunter and Holland.
wish we could fit Beltre in this scenario to strengthen 3rd base!

So is Wood done in Chicago?
Everything I’d heard had him pegged as being solidly back with the Cubbies.
Now there’s a closer I’d be interested in throwing down on, assuming the price is right.
Sign me the F up.

I want in on that then.
This is the first FA closer I’ve wanted us to pursue. K-Rod and Fuentes and Hoffman did nothing for me. I want Wood. Wood, FX2, Jack Benny, Ceej and Mad Dog would make really happy as the back end of our ’09 ’pen.
Make it happen, JD.
Any thoughts about what it’d take?
Would 3/33 get ‘er done? Or more? I haven’t been paying attention to the closer market before now cause it didn’t interest me at all.
