Yankees get Nick Swisher from the ChiSox
The Yankees have picked up outfielder Nick Swisher from the ChiSox.
Apparently, in exchange for minor leaguer Jeffrey Marquez.
Marquez is a 24 year old RHP who was a first round pick in 2004, and who BA didn't include in their top 10 this year. He had a rough season in 2008 and doesn't strike out a bunch of guys.
Unless there is someone else of significance going to Chicago, this looks like a salary dump, to me.
And just a season after the ChiSox gave up Gio Gonzalez and Ryan Sweeney to get him.
Bleah.
UPDATE -- The full deal:
The Yankees traded infielder Wilson Betemit and minor league pitchers Jeff Marquez and Jhonny Nunez to Chicago in exchange for the switch-hitting Swisher and minor league pitcher Kanekoa Texeira
Picking up Betemit isn't bad. Nunez also didn't make the BA top 10 list for the Yanks.

Yeah
Like I said in the FanShot deleted, I was part of the crowd that didn’t like the trade for Chicago. I ended up backing off my initial reaction because I believed they could get value back for him if they fell out of contention. Problem is, they were in contention and this is no where near what they gave up for him. Why would they sell so low on him? Has to be a salary dump, but it wouldn’t surprise me if more players ended up going over.

The Yankees have acquired first baseman Nick Swisher and Class AA right-hander Kanekoa Texeira from the White Sox, according to major-league sources.
The exact players going back to the White Sox are not yet known, but sources say the White Sox will be receiving two minor leaguers and one major-league reserve. ESPN.com is reporting that Yankees Class AAA right-hander Jeff Marquez is in the deal.

Is Toronto satisfied with their catcher situation? The blush of youth is gone from Curtis Thigpen. It’s doubtful they want a Max Ramirez, with Snider probably getting DH ABs, and Saltalamacchia is close to overpaying. Stark says they want more pitching.

If there’s any doubt about Andrus, Cecil would require discouraging scouting reports.

With Swisher, Nady, Damon and Matsui in the mix for their COF-1b-DH positions they’re pretty much set.

CC’s the best pitcher to hit the free market since the Unit went to AZ back in the day. (Not counting Clemens since tat was a whole ’nother sort of drama.)

Swisher, Nady, Damon and Matsui
My guess
Swisher: 1B
Nady: RF
Damon: LF
Matsui: DH
Obviously, Swisher is not going to be their biggest position player acquisition of the offseason. So far, that lineup looks pretty underwhelming, but if they add Tex or Cameron, things could look very different and brighter for the Yankees.
by chrisR on Nov 13, 2008 7:19 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs

I wouldn’t say freaking good.. I mean it has the chance of being a real solid, smart lineup as a group, but also the potential of being pretty underwhelming… If you include Posada, that’s 4 players that are at least 35, and a struggling Nick Swisher.

.294 .370 .424
That is just not too hot from your four big offensive positions, period. Maybe Damon keeps it up and the other three kick it up by about 100 OPS points each next year, but just based on what they did for NY last year and how old they are, bleh.
by Brett Perryman on Nov 13, 2008 9:54 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I think it's pretty reasonable to expect Nady to be a little better than he was with them, imo.
Though his Pitt numbers were prolly a bit inflated. Somewhere in the middle is what I’d expect.
Swisher is a really good bet to rebound, imo. H ewas jerked in and out of the lineup by the uber douche and asked to play CF, which was a comical move for a guy with his skill set. He kept his BB% at the same strong levels as before even as he was struggling and I just don’t see him posting another ~.250 BABIP. I’d bet on .240/.360/.460 next year. I hate the guy, but he’s a pretty good TTO player when he’s right.
Matsui can hit when he’s healthy, period. The big question there is health. I’m betting that if they do the smart thing and DH him the majority of the time he’ll have better luck staying in the lineup.
And Damon looked rejuvenated last year. I know he’ll come down a little cause his numbers last year were a little too BA driven, but he’s still got some good baseball in him.
The big problem to me is that they don’t have a true RF. Nady’s not good out there, Matsui’s knees are no good, and apparently Swisher’s gonna be the 1b. However, no matter what at least it’ll be a defensive upgrade from Abreu out there. He was the worst RF I’ve seen in… well, maybe ever. And he used to be pretty decent, iirc. He just all the sudden started taking dumps in the field. Who knew.

Bronson Arroyo
MLBTR just had a bullet point about the Rangers interest in Bronson Arroyo. This is not the first time we have heard this. He is signed through 2010 w/ an option for 2011 at about 12 per year. His numbers, if translated to the AL, would look a lot like Millwood and Padilla. But he has pitched 857 innings over the last 4 years, so he is durable.
Very vanilla, if you ask me.

I love this trade for the Sox. I love this trade for the Rangers. I love this trade for the Yanks and Nick Swisher. Now could they find any way to get Girardi fired and Guillen hired? Wait, that level of douche-ness would almost make me feel sorry for the Yankees and their fans.

Dont think so
Salty, Borbon, Hunter and Vallejo is my counter-offer
the preceding post was a great success.

I think Greinke is worth significantly more if you given a chance to resign him to a long-term deal. Without a deal in place, I’m not sure 2 years of Greinke is worth more than the deal you just proposed. Greinke for 5 years is probably worth giving up Andrus + the package you mention.
I really like Greinke, but I think I might look at players like Bonderman and Sonnanstine first. They might put up comparable numbers while costing significantly less.

Did I miss something?
This deal isn’t far off from the one I proposed.
Davis, Saltalamacchia and Hurley.
You save one more player, and keep the better gloves (Borbon, Andrus).
If that’s not enough, flip them an expendable corner outfielder… something KC desperately is seeking (Cruz / Boggs / Mayberry).
Also, why would KC want Borbon? Don’t they have DeJesus locked up?
GREINKE HO!!!!!
by oc on Nov 13, 2008 8:33 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Dejesus is a butt terrible CF'er. He is to CF defense what Matt Kata was to 3b defense. If they had anything else behind him he'd be a LF'er by now.
And I’d take Chris Davis over Borbon and Andrus any day of the week and wouldn’t think twice.
Davis is beast, the kind of elite bat you dream about. No trading him, please.

the padres get for peavy, then i would offer something less than that.
from what we have heard of the current offers, this would far exceed that, so no.

which would you rather be in the division for the next 6-10 years?

CC’s a big muscley mountain beast of a pitcher.

like everybody else
I’d much rather have Teix in the division than CC.
But scenario I’m really hoping for is that they miss out on both those guys and sign K-Rod for huge money.

CC
They always have the pitching that is able to shut us down. I’d rather see them tie themselves up to a huge deal for a pitcher than to get some much needed offense.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

If they continue to
have the pitching that shuts us down, we’re not going to beat them, like we haven’t. We need that to change.

that change will come
by not allowing that crappy offense to score on us.

but I do think he eventually follows fellow former tribe teammate Bartolo Colon in having a short career.

they’d only be four down with the ball and 1:10 left. Oh well.

Dirk
would the Jazz trade Brewer, Millsap, and AK47 for Dirk?
Face it Mavs fans. This team jumped the Shark in the 06 game 7 against the Spurs, which will be the greatest moment in Mavs history for many more years. Time to move on.
by clark on Nov 13, 2008 11:15 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Why would you want to do that deal?
If you’re trading Dirk you want cap room + picks or cap room + a young guy with potential. Not a pu-pu platter of decent players, one with a huge contract.
And if you’re gonna blow it up now be prepared to absorb the stomach punch that will be NJ getting our top 3 pick in ’10. The Jason Kidd was and remains one of the dumbest moves ever because of that second unprotected pick. Seriously, Cuban. WTMF?
No, I think you gotta give it a little more time at least.
If they’re still shitty after 20 or 30 games, then you talk about blowing it the eff up. And it’ll hurt. Here’s hoping Dirkles goes somewhere where he can win a title and then bitch slaps Stern at the trophy presentation while screaming “Ich bin ein Dirk Nowitzki!” then storms off the court never to be seen in America again. Cause mother fuck David Stern, that’s why. I’ve publicly announced that I’m going to dance on his grave when he dies. I’m gonna post the video on youtube. It’s gonna be a hit.

i'm not talking about tomorrow
but seriously. this team isn’t going to “turn it around” in any real respect. they are a veteran team that came out of the gate flat. they aren’t going to gel or improve over the course of the year.
Plus, I would say Millsap and Brewer are better than decent players. And you could add a first round pick or two to even it out. Or perhaps you could replace AK with Okur and Korver or Harpring.

My dream deal.
Hope that Oden and Aldridge don’t play well together (which they will).. Then trade Dirk for Aldridge and Raef Lafrentz.

Dude Aldridge
is not enough of a return for Dirk. I don’t know why you would think that

Yeah, that’s a nice temporary return…

That it’s as good a deal as you can get.
Which is why I wouldn’t trade him.

I don't think Aldridge is enough for Dirk
But his proposal works simply because of the math. Trading in the NBA is more about making the money work than who you get back. With Dirks huge contract and Aldridge still on his rookie deal it will take a Raef type contract to make it work.
