I don't want to go all overenthused
But this hire just might be the hinge that opens the Rangers door to general success.

If only Orel had talent to work with
He did a great job given the crap that was given to him.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I've always heard he is quite
fond of himself. Perhaps that has something to do with it…

TR on Maddux
This at the end…
The Rangers are still talking trades with other clubs and still have catching to offer. They would like to trade one to Boston for Clay Buchholz, but the Red Sox don’t want to deal him and are still waiting to see if they can re-sign catcher Jason Varitek. The Marlins need catching but are adamantly opposed to trading any of their young starters.
The Rangers may have some interest if the Rockies want to trade newly acquired reliever Huston Street .

TR's suggestion
that whether or not the Red Sox would be interested in a young franchise catcher (or at least the degree of their interest) hinges on whether they can bring back Varitek seems off base.

Varitek
I got the impression he’s a separate deal…just a free-agency chore, but one requiring their attention because they want him for a “mentor.”

Right
But if that’s what he’s trying to say, he said it all wrong.
