OT: The Mavs

So they blow another 4th quarter lead tonight to the Magic and lose 102-100 after leading going into the 4th. What the heck is wrong with this team? They are now 2-7 and O'fer at the AAC. They absolutely suck right now. Personally, the horrible, horrible Jason Kidd trade is going to screw this team for a while. 2 first round picks and giving up Devin Harris is hurting more than anyone thought it would. They have no depth off the bench, except for Gerald Green and he hardly ever plays. Can they get it turned around or are the Mavs now a lottery team? Discuss.

Do you not want to be a lottery team?

Why be the 8th seed and lose in the 1st round?

by tyd3311 on Nov 14, 2008 10:14 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Valid point

but I’d rather see a good team than risk being a lottery pick and wasting it like the Mavs always seem to do. There was a good piece on the Hardline today about the Mavs last decade of 1st and 2nd round picks. Only ONE (Josh Howard) guy is still with the team, and only 3 (including Josh Howard) is still in the NBA. Wow.

in the trade that was essentiall a young devin harris with a longer deal, for an older kidd with 1 1/2 years on contract, the mavs also gave up 2 1st round draft picks. of course they aren’t consecutive years, but still.

The reason I said irreverence. Is that I felt the remark by you by saying “I don’t even like the Cowboys” was disrespectful. By you stating this on a blog that is Pro Dallas Cowboys. I felt the lack of due respect.

I don't give a shit about the Cowboys

I catch a game now and then but that’s it. I don’t like football because I don’t like football players. Going to HS in Texas will do that to you, I guess. There’s nothing wrong with the game itself so I can watch it from time to time, but I can’t really “get into it”.

Bitter?

I went to HS here in Texas, and I don’t hate football players. What a weird statement….

They never went to class

…yet somehow make the honor roll? They beat the shit out of a kid in the hallway and nothing happens to them? If I do the same thing I’m sent away to in-school suspension? And God forbid if you mouth off to a football player and he starts a fight with you. Oh Jesus you’re in trouble, especially if you WIN.

So yeah I’m bitter. Are you going to say that football players aren’t spoiled children who get everything handed to them? That they do shit without any consequences?

Those kids in HS are the same ones playing in the NFL today.

by Black Francis on Nov 16, 2008 1:29 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I think that's a very broad generalization

So, yeah I’m going to say football players aren’t spoiled children.

Sorry you had some bad experiences, but that doesn’t mean all football players are assholes.

Well

At my high school, that wasn’t the case. There were a handful of football players on the honor roll, but they were guys who went to class and worked hard.

Of course, at my school, basketball was king and football was the redheaded stepchild.

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 16, 2008 1:46 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Clearly

…I was generalizing a bit. There were some smart football players back at my high school, and some pretty cool ones too.

But there were a lot of psychotic ones, as well, and the issue I have with that is that they never got into any trouble whereas the rest of us would and did for the same kinds of behavior.

And how many of us went to Division 1 schools? I saw the same shit in college.

That’s all I’m going to say about it. I mean, we all know what human nature is. If someone’s treated like a god from an early age, many times that’s asshole creation.

I went to a Div. I school

My roommate one year ended up trying to walk on as a kicker. This was at UT, and I believe it was John Mackovic’s first year as head coach. They didn’t have any legit kickers, and had a sort of open casting call for walk-ons who had kicked in high school.

Anyway, according to my roommate, during two-a-days in August, Butch Hadnot brought one of the new coaches his transcript that included his grades from that summer’s classes. The coach looked at it, then said, “You know, son, we can help arrange for you to transfer.”

Well My School Sucked at Football

..so may have been pretty desperate to keep what recruits they had in action, I guess. If you go to a UT or a Texas Tech, you’re probably going to have enough depth that you can get rid of people based on character problems.

I only ran into those guys in freshman level classes and now and then in bars, but it seemed to me not much had changed with them.

by Black Francis on Nov 16, 2008 6:45 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Let's just ignore them and see if the suckiness goes away

We should be rebuilding. The days of contention are gone. This is not the Utah Jazz that made it into the playoffs every year with Stockton and Malone. We should start with moving Jason Kidd, and then, the ugly contracts. Moving Terry and Dampier should help a lot.

The Mavs'

under Avery’s ego-dominated, iso system with Harris were 30-13, good for around 3rd in the West when Harris got hurt against the Nuggets, with two tough games against the Celts and the Pistons coming up. We’d beaten the Lakers (minus Gasol), Detroit, Phoenix, New Orleans, San Antonio and Utah.

We went 5-5 after that to go into the break, they made the Kidd deal and we slumped down the stretch, couldn’t beat a good team (just the Suns and the Jazz in our April spurt) barely making the playoffs.

Why the front office made that trade? Because we looked like shit without a true PG in an iso system.

Look what Harris is doing now, having adjusted to a Nets’ system. His last two games, he’s scored 38 and 30, doing that by using his speed and penetration which the Mavs could’ve used in a bunch of games down the stretch, to get to the line.

by tyd3311 on Nov 15, 2008 10:05 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Harris is averaging 21 pts, 5.4 ast (1.8 TO for a 3:1 ratio), 4.2 reb a game, and most importantly can actually guard the ball, while our backcourt of Kidd, Terry and Stackhouse has to be among the two or three worst defensive backcourts in the NBA. To say that that guy wouldn’t help them is just stupid.

if for no other reason than that would leave you with Terry, Kidd and Harris in the BC.

Harris was pretty clearly the second most talented player on the team last year and it was clear he’d thrive under anyone but stupid Avery the suck bag. I hate him so much.

Stars are struggling too :(

It’s ugly on the Hockey front as well. We’re last in the Pacific Division with a 5-8-3 record.

It’s like Captain Brenden Morrow said " Everyone needs to look at themselves, and if you think you’re giving 100 percent, you’re not and you’re fooling yourself if you think you are. Until everyone is under that same belief, we’re going to keep playing ourselves into this hole."

Brenden went on to say

"Everyone’s feeling the pressure," Morrow said. "The quickest fix is just to get on a roll and start winning. We’ve got to get things going in the right direction, and Saturday has to be that start for us."

Stars play the Phoenix Coyotes tomorrow night and have a chance to pick up 2 two divisional points.

Stars need to get back on track with a win

The problem is that the Mavs don’t have the stuff to get through a playoff run. They’re a team of jump shooters that aren’t exactly filled with great shooters. They have no heart. They play no D. They show a complete lack of clutch instinct.

Worst-case, Dallas tanks for the draft. Of course, Griffin would be up there if things go absolutely horribly. I like DeRozan as an athletic guy. Thabeet would be an improvement over our current centers (no more Damp contract). I’m not sold on Curry (yes, the kid can score but tweener much?) but would be fine with Brandon Jennings or Damion James. Lower would be Tyler Smith, Chase Budinger and Darren Collison. Ty Lawson and Pat Mills scares me a little with short man’s disease.

Or else, we just aim on clearing up cap space to join in the LeBron sweepstakes. Kidd will be off the books, so will Howard and Damp. The Diop wasting of the MLE sucked. Dirk might take a paycut (earning 20mil will be down, you’d think.) Stackhouse will be off. Jet still has a while to go, I think.

it's gonna be 1990-1998 all over again...

i don’t see them making the playoffs this year.

big money guys on their team…

kidd is an expiring contract at 21 mil (good, but please don’t trade him for another person with a longer contract!)

dirk makes 19 mill per thru 2010/11 (slight plus)

howard makes about 10.5 mill per thru 2010/11 team option on that last year (push)

dampier is signed thru 2010/11 too, making 9.5, 10.1, 13.1 per (pretty bad)

terry is a disaster, signed 4 years thru 2011/12 at 9-11.5 per (really bad)

stack is an expiring contract at 7 mil (great)

so the mavs PROBABLY can’t move damp or terry unless they wanna take on other bad contracts. they lose 28 million between stack and kidd unless they trade them for longer bad contracts. howard and dirk are here for 3 more years at reasonable rates.

how about our future draft picks (assuming nellie can break his streak of bad drafts)

mavs traded 2 first round picks in the kidd for harris trade. so i guess that means they don’t have a 1st round pick in 2009 and then in 2011.

how great was last year’s draft for the mavs?

shan foster (51) he is now in the italian league

2007
nick fazekas (34) was released so they could make room for van horn in the kidd trade. he now plays in the belgian league. Marc Gasol was picked AFTER him by the lakers. so was Ramon Sessions!
renaldas seibutis (50) played in greece last year. Ramon Sessions was taken after him!!!!
milovan rekovic (60) plays in the russian super league

2006?

maurice ager (28) has played 6 minutes with the nets this season. Paul Millsap was taken fater him.
danilo pinnock (58) is out of basketball ( i think)

2005?
none

Damp is not guaranteed in 10'

He has to essentially play 25 minutes/game for 82 games in 09’-10’ for the following year to kick in.. that makes his contract very tradeable.

Kidd, I’m sure we will let him expire.

Terry is really the only terrible contract we have.. Diop at 5 m/year is reasonable enough.

Stackhouse’ expiring 7 mil is great, but only 2 million of that is guaranteed.

by tyd3311 on Nov 15, 2008 6:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Kidd

Why would the team let him expire?

Can’t his expiring contract fetch a first-round pick? And isn’t it a pretty tidy trade right after the season’s over?

sure the mavs pick up expiring contracts, but it wouldn’t really help them any because wally don’t really fit anywhere on the team. and if the cavs continue to do well, their 1st round pick would be a late pick. hickson, i don’t really know much about him, but he wouldn’t play much right now with dirk, damp, diop and bass on the team. he IS signed for like 40 years at 1.5 million per though.

Correct me if I'm wrong

I thought in trading an expiring contract the rule about taking back a matching amount is null.

In other words you can trade an expiring contract for a pick alone.

Is that not so?

i never heard that

i’m pretty sure that the only time contract length comes into account is the rule that you can’t trade for a player and then trade him away too quickly

The point is

You either let him walk or gain a young cheap player/first rd pick.

by tyd3311 on Nov 15, 2008 7:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

you let him go

because maybe you DO get a draft pick, but you also get another HUGE contract for more years or multiple big contracts for more years.

let him walk and have that 20million cleared from the books.

everything is NOT fine

but there is plenty of time to turn this ship around. The Mavs stuck close to a great team in Houston before falling apart in the 4th; dominated several great teams – the Spurs before they lost Parker (true not as great without Manu but this is a Spurs team that even without Parker just beat Houston) which they won; the undefeated, unquestioned # 1 team in the league Lakers without J-Ho, the second best player on the team, for 3 quarters before falling apart in the 4th, and the Magic for 3 quarters before once again losing it in the 4th.

The game vs. the Bulls, a talented team that hasn’t played up to their potential, and the winless Clippers once again without Josh Howard are the bad losses. With those two as wins, we’d be looking bad at 4-5, but not terrible as we do now. We’re flat out bad on the road against bad teams and we’re even worse at home against great teams.

Give it another 10 games. Remember, in 2006-2007, this team started 0-4, which is considerably worse than 2-7, and went on to win a team record and league best 67 games.

you forget to mention

that there is a downward spiral the past few years

“lost” the nba finals
lost in first round of playoffs to the #8 seed (as a 1 seed)
lost in first round of the playoffs (as a 4 seed)
fired coach, don’t have a first round draft pick coming, 2-7 so far, getting older but not wiser

The biggest mistake they made

was not adding fresh talent after the Finals loss..

by tyd3311 on Nov 15, 2008 6:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

i know

we keep hearing that “it’s pretty much the same team that went to the finals”

it’s also just about the same team that lost in the 1st round twice in a row

Obama vs Palin in 2012. bring her on!

by gossamer on Nov 15, 2008 6:44 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Well

It is the same team that went to the finals.

But with an older, slower, not as good Jason Terry.

An old and slow Jason Kidd instead of Devin Harris.

The mystery-pack shooting guard instead of Adrian Griffin.

An older, slower (and it looks like, done) Jerry Stackhouse.

An older, slower Erick Dampier.

That team that went to the Finals 2 1/2 years ago wasn’t exactly young.

And it has gotten older and slower since then.

Which means it is less athletic and more vulnerable on defense than it was then.

Stack's been done

"He’s basically told himself unconsciously that he can’t be any good unless he catches 130 games a year. If he played with the baseball smarts of a guy like a David Eckstein, he’d maximize his talent and be an incredible player." - Andy Seiler, Texas Rangers Analyst

Meh

The team won an ungodly amount of games and certainly had the talent to make it back to the “Finals” to “lose” to whatever team Stern deemed more worthy of the title.

They just ran out of gas and ran into an unpossibly hot GS team that matched up very well against them.

I can’t fault them for running that core back out again.

Well

I didn’t form this opinion after the title or Golden State loss.. I believe you always have to be getting better, no matter what, even if you win the title.

by tyd3311 on Nov 15, 2008 8:00 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

We could have just as easily

lost to San Antonio that year, and you know that.

and my problem wasn’t with the core we brought back, it was the crapiness of the roster past 1-6, and Damp and Diop are included 1-6.

by tyd3311 on Nov 15, 2008 8:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

We had a viable chance

last year before we unloaded Harris, of getting through the West. We’d beaten or split most of the Western playoff teams up to that point.

Regular season.

by tyd3311 on Nov 16, 2008 1:26 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes

but things showed we could still beat them. We were swept by the Dubs in regular season in 06-07

by jonthefon on Nov 16, 2008 11:27 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

right

but why do a trade. typically a couple reasons for a trade

1) make the team better now

2) make the team better in the near future

3) save the team money next year

i don’t think the trade did any of those for dallas

Obama vs Palin in 2012. bring her on!

by gossamer on Nov 16, 2008 5:28 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Or

4) panic trade.

by jonthefon on Nov 16, 2008 9:37 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

or

5) preparing for a rebuild and cap flexibility come 2009-2010.

So Far, This Is A Team...

…of no-driving, jump-shooting dudes who are one step too slow to play zone defense.

The thing that killed me about this team under Avery was how they settled for jump shots. They would go up in games and then start clanking shots from all around the offensive end and either slowly or rapidly give away their lead and get demoralized both at the same time.

I thought that surely things would change under Carlisle. So far, though, they’re still the same bunch of clank jockeys they were under Avery. Combine their clankiness with the fact that they seem unable to catch up to even one skip pass when they play zone and I just don’t see a way forward for this team to be anything other than a lottery team.

But I also believe that it is early in the season and early on in getting used to a new coach. But so far it doesn’t look promising.

The difference between Don Nelson and Donnie Nelson.
Undrafted rookie Anthony Morrow had 37 points and 11 rebounds in his first NBA start and Golden State beat the Los Angeles Clippers 121-103 on Saturday

by tyd3311 on Nov 15, 2008 6:27 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...

I think the actual difference is that one’s a coach and one’s a GM.

by LiamP on Nov 15, 2008 9:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No

One has an eye for talent and other doesn’t.

by tyd3311 on Nov 15, 2008 9:45 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Im pretty sure

Don Nelson was the coach and GM of the Dallas Mavericks.. and I have read that he is pretty much making the personnel decisions in Golden State.

by tyd3311 on Nov 15, 2008 9:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes he was, but that's not particularly relevant.

I don’t keep up with Warriors basketball, so I have no idea if what you’re saying is true or not, but I find it hard to believe. Mullin is talked about pretty highly and is generally credited for building that roster.

Either way, even if Nellie was involved in personnel decisions, I highly doubt he would be involved much in the scouting and signing of an undrafted rookie.

Chris Anstey, Nick Fazekas, Van Horn, Podlakzinism, probably loved shawn bradley.

daddy nelson

is the one that loved bradley.

for the most part bradley was good, just a little overpaid

when i say for the most part

i mean his first 5 seasons. he was solid. my knock against him would have been the whole illegal defense problem he had. the next 2 years, he would have been a good player off the bench, dallas just never had a decent starting center (until damp got here). bradley’s last 2 years, he was suckage.

knock him all you want, but his 1st 5 years he got about 9-10 points per game, 7-8 rebounds per game and 3 blocks. that’s nice to have.

you can trash him for not always trying his hardest or being lanky, but he gave the mavs 5 solid years, 2 decent years and 2 crap years.

Raef LaFrentz`

was a solid fit in Nellie’s system. He could shoot, he could finish inside (no post game though) and he was a decent shotblocker (but mediocre defender overall).

Only problem was he had a big contract, so he was unloaded at the right time.

over a consistent run of Mike Dunleavy’s every year with no pure superstar.
