Cowboys game/NFL thread
The day isn't going too badly for Dallas. IIt would be a nice bonus to see the Bengals somehow pull something out against Philly in OT. But if Dallas wins tonight, the entire NFCN would be behind them now. Philly would either be even or a game back with a game left with them, and Washington would be even with them. TB would be a game up on them, but they are one team with whom they have a tiebreaker. Atlanta's loss would put them even with them.
So... this is pretty much the season tonight, much like the Bucs game was. If they win they can probably afford to go 4-2 down the stretch, which is very doable. A loss to Washington would mean that only a subsequent crater by them would likely allow Dallas to feel comfortable even going 5-1 against the tough schedule.

My concern for Dallas offensively
assuming that Romo’s finger doesn’t cause him problems, is Flozell. He’s just been awful since he hurt his hand (or it got infected or whatever), and Washington figures to bring lots of pressure. If he isn’t a problem, I’m going to be pretty disappointed if they play poorly on offense.

Im expecting a big game from the defense
and Anthony Spencer is particular, his breakout game.

one thing about Quitter that i liked
is when the oline started messing up he would go Max protect. Wade/JG don’t do that too often. Don’t understand why not with TO and now Roy out there…

it's such a weird hang up he has
isn’t it better the way it worked out? why do you care that bill parcells left if everybody kind of agrees that it was a good thing?

wow.
now, i’m being questioned on my opinion of a guy who sought out for the Giants GM job during the season and preached to every one his players not to quit when in fact, he’s the one who quit during the season…

why do people take criticisms so personally
if you can’t defend your opinions without getting into a tizzy, don’t state them publicly
and if you think he quit during the season, then that is defensible. I feel like you came to the conclusion after the fact judging from comments. I thought you meant quit as in he didn’t stay on with the cowboys.
I kind of think it’s a bit odd to say he quit in the middle of a playoff run. Doesn’t really make much sense. Even if he was looking at the Giants GM job, why would he deny himself a shot at a title? I’m sure he looked at the dynamics of a playoff run that year and could have concluded that the cowboys had a very good chance of making the super bowl.

Yeah but that's
part of why I say that I’d be disappointed if Flozell doesn’t struggle. Kosier being next to him should make him more comfortable (besides hopefully upgrading the line in general), but he can’t keep ends from running right around him.

That works out well for Dallas I think
With a win Dallas is a half game up on Philly, so assuming Dallas plays well enough to get to 10-6, Philly doesn’t seem likely to pass them at 10-5-1.

Brad Johnson included
…I’ll never understand that Rams game. They are getting dismantled 28-3 by the 49ers in the first half. This comes after 44 and 21 point losses the last two weeks with Bulger. Was it just a fluky combination of Dallas not adjusting to their mess and the Rams celebrating their coach being gone?

My working theory from watching those games. . .
. . . is simply that Haslett had some good wrinkles to pull out and the league has neutralized them pretty well as time’s gone on.

It's just that
the performance difference is so drastic. You wouldn’t think that game plan / scheming tweaks in the middle of the season would account for alike a 50-60 point swing in performance from the rest of your season, both before and after.

Steven Jackson
had something to do with it too. I think that New England loss and the loss of Jackson once again just killed the momentum.

OT for a moment...
Texas HS football will play its second round next weekend, with one of the match-ups being Highland Park (miles’ alma mater) and Kimball (which, for those who don’t know, is in Oak Cliff, a shall-we-say less affluent part of Dallas).
And Kimball won the coin flip, meaning the game will be played at Sprague Stadium in the heart of Oak Cliff.
Kimball’s going to get its ass handed to them, but they’re making the SMU crowd travel to the real Dallas. Sometimes, life is funny.

Well

But 2-8 start means you have to go 48-24 the rest of the way to get to 50 wins, which is probably what you need to make the playoffs in the West.

You keep Kidd and trade Dirk.

Why keep Kidd
Even if you move Dirk for an expiring contract, you still aren’t going to be far enough under the cap to do anything this offseason, I don’t believe.
by Adam J. Morris on Nov 16, 2008 7:22 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
But you can only get yourself in deeper
by trading Kidd.. and I also believe there will be a market for Dampier.

Actually...
…looking at it, if you move Dirk for expiring contracts (say, Allen Iverson) at the deadline, you are about $10 million under the cap heading into next season (assuming it is around $60 million next year).
You could get another $5 million under if you waive Stackhouse and only pay him the $2 million guaranteed for 2009-10.
by Adam J. Morris on Nov 16, 2008 7:25 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
And if we trade Dirk
Get draft picks or a good young player along with expiring contracts, you’re pretty much locking yourself into a top 5 pick, getting an elite talent.

and give an offer sheet to a player like Marvin Williams. Im not sure the Hawks can afford to keep him.

Ugh
A plan that involves dumping Dirk so that we can use our cap space to go get Marvin Williams, and hoping him and a top 5 pick this year salvages the 2009-10 season (when we don’t have our first rounder).

The cap space will mainly come into play summer of summer 2010. When signing Bosh could stem the loss of that draft pick.

I think the Mavs are better than a 25 win team...
…which is what 3-7 projects to.
However, I don’t think they are a 50 win team, and win you get in an early hole, you have to play at an even higher level the rest of the way.
If they play like a 50 win team the rest of the way, they end up with 47 wins, not 50, which is likely not good enough to make the playoffs.
by Adam J. Morris on Nov 16, 2008 8:01 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
i think there is a flaw with that theory
it’s possible for a “50 win team” to have a non representative subsection of the season. If you thought the mavericks were a 50 win team to begin the season, then a 3-7 start followed by a 9-1 start shouldn’t dissuade you of that

by ab03 on Nov 16, 2008 8:04 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Sure
But what I’m saying is, if this is a 50 win caliber team, and they get off to a 3-7 start, they are likely to win 44 games the rest of the way, not the 47 they’d need to get to 50. In order to get to 50, they’d have to play like better than a 50 win team.
by Adam J. Morris on Nov 16, 2008 8:06 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
you're not getting it
the 3-7 is part of the 82 game season. i’m saying 3-7 is part of the ups and downs of a 50 win season. i think they are a 50 win team, whcih means that even if they have a 3-7 stretch, they are capable of having a 9-1 stretch to offset it, while playing .630 ball the rest of the way
""If they'd have told me you can make the team but you've got to shine the shoes, I'd have been there shining shoes." -Bradley
by ab03 on Nov 16, 2008 8:09 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't disagree with that
However, if they are a 50 win caliber team, then over any 72 game stretch, they should be expected to win 44 games.
A 50 win caliber team isn’t more likely to win 47 out of 72 games because they went 3-7 in a 10 game stretch. It is like saying, well, this coin came up heads 5 times in a row, so of the next 95 flips, only 45 should be heads and 50 should be tails.
by Adam J. Morris on Nov 16, 2008 8:12 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
This is
A really silly argument all around.
by brettgardner on Nov 16, 2008 8:12 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
there is obviously a flaw in your argument
the coin flip proves it. if you flipped a coin 10 times, and got heads 7 and tails 3. You would still expect that over a 100 flips, it would normalize to about 50 – 50. independent probability would still be 50 – 50 but it shouldn’t change your overall prediction about what the end result will be just because a subset bucks the trend.

by ab03 on Nov 16, 2008 8:15 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It depends
In an independent group of 100 flips, that does not include the 10 flip sample, yes, you’d expect 50/50.
However, if you randomly sample a subset of 10 flips within a group of 100 flips, and find in that subset of 10 flips that there were 7 heads and 3 tails, you would predict that the total of all 100 flips would be 52 heads and 48 tails.

I can’t tell. But whenver he is THROW AT HIM.

somehow i don't think that's the only one of the day
but that was due to decision making, not pinky

decision making?
how was that due to decision making?
that was a bad throw that just sailed on him…

decision making isn't the right description
but it wasn’ that he was aiming for a spot and his pinky affected it. i think it was just a timing issue

I wouldn't normally classify it under "decision making."
But it’s certainly a debatable definition.
Like the decision to double pump.

Oh fuck me.
That double sucks, because now people will use that to pretend DeAngelo Hall isn’t awful.

He almost had it timed perfectly.. but yeah he went a fraction of a second early.

when is felix supposed to be back?
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
