Cowboys aftermath

PHEW!

With six games to play:

NFC East (all but clinched): NY Giants 9-1

NFC West (all but clinched): Arizona 7-3

Carolina leads the South at 8-2, and one of the three North teams will win their division, which means that you should be in pretty good shape with respect to those teams. Aside from that, the WC standings:

Tampa Bay 7-3
Dallas 6-4
Washington 6-4
Atlanta 6-4
Philadelphia 5-4-1
GB, Minn, Chi, NO 5-5

First of all, you have the H2H tiebreaker with the one team ahead of you, which is great. You also have the H2H against GB, so the only two teams you figure to face up against here, you at least do have that first tiebreaker.

In the division, Dallas is now tied with Washington. Tiebreakers with Philly are almost sure to not matter now with their tie.

Conference records:

Washington 5-3
Atlanta 4-3
Dallas 4-4
NO 2-4
Chicago 4-4
Minnesota 4-3

Remaining games:

Dallas: SF, Sea, at Pit, NYG, Bal, at Phi
TB: at Det, NO, at Car, at Atl, SD, Oak
Washington: at Sea, NYG, at Bal, at Cin, Phi, at SF
Atlanta: Car, at SD, at NO, TB, at Min, SL
Philly: at Bal, Ari, AT NYG, Cle, at Wash, Dal

First off, I think that we need to see Carolina beat TB and Atlanta, since they're two up on us to begin with and probably aren't going to get caught by us and still make the playoffs.

Second, if Baltimore can win at home against the Skins and Eagles and lose to us on the road, that would be great.

Third, unfortunately, we're the only ones who still have to play a top AFC team unless the Chargers suddenly find it. And we have to play them on the road.

Fourth, the Giants play all of the NFCE still. Hopefully we won't lose a game there to either of our rivals. Too bad none of the OOD teams have to play them still.

It's still no slam dunk at ten wins, as the Bucs stand a good chance of going 4-2 themselves and staying ahead of us for that last spot. But at least we're back in the middle of it.

Comments closed in the other thread before I could reply to DShepp

Love the copy/paste.

DShepp, I don’t think our arguments are that much different.

My argument is that from a week-to-week basis, I think the Giants, Panthers, Cardinals and (yes, even the) Bucs have been better. Obviously having Romo back is going to be big for this team, and the offense is going to be better (duh).

But the offensive line is still struggling (although they looked good in the 4th quarter tonight), Roy Williams has yet to get involved in a serious way, and the secondary is still the same secondary.

My argument isn’t, and has never been, that the Cowboys aren’t good (double negative, but I hope you know what I’m getting at). I only think that the Cowboys fall into that same category as the Panthers, Bucs and Cardinals, and maybe the Falcons: good, not great.

And from a week-to-week basis, I just feel that the Panthers, Bucs and Cardinals have been better. Does that mean that I think they have a higher ceiling than the Cowboys? No. But I do think they’ve been more consistently good.

"Still the same secondary"

Do you mean the secondary of the first 3 games when everyone was healthy and they did a good job against Cleveland and Green Bay (but admittedly, not against Philly)? Or the secondary that has been banged up since then?

by GhettoBear04 on Nov 16, 2008 10:42 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I mean the secondary, period.

Though this secondary has improved exponentially since Roy Williams went on IR.

Roy Williams

How much did you expect him to be involved thus far? His first two games were with Brad Johnson as QB. he was coming to a new team in the middle of the season and having to learn a new offense on the fly. Now he has not only had to learn a new offense but get in sync with the regular QB. His role will expand as the season moves along. he was brought in here to be a force at the end of the season not right now.

I'm sure they were mentioned in the other thread for accolades but

Ratliff, Newman and Scandrick played great IMO. Newman came out for one play and they got us on Moss. Henry had Randle-El in the slot, and they get 20+ on him on an easy play. Scandrick has been really impressive overall imo.

The part that really hurts

Is that we got 6 guys who regularly contribute in ‘05 (if you’re being kind to Burnett and Spears) but absolutely nothing from ‘06. ’04 sucked also, and ’07 hasn’t done too much yet. ‘08 I’m feeling good about, though.

I think you’re in good shape if you get 2-3 really solid contributors per draft, but to hit on so little makes winning hard.

I actually disagree on the latter.

They weren’t awful, but a QB who isn’t Tony Romo would have been havine a lot of trouble behind that line.

They were good in the run game, though, which is, I feel, their real strength.

Agree

The Cowboys had more quick route stuff in than I’ve ever seen with Romo. Those slant INTs came on plays where they were trying to get the ball out, like, immediately. Their early gameplan looked like they were playing the 85 Bears/90 Eagles/00 Ravens, etc. with the sort of passes they were throwing.

Two out of three

Stellar defensive efforts since Wade took over..that’s what I’m looking for.

I’ve pretty much realized in recent weeks, DC is every bit as important as OC. This fixes up some holes in the thoery. Why are some OC’s very good, then on another team very bad? Because if that teams defense sucks, the good OC cant necessarily overcome it.

Season saving win, and the tough one. Now need to hold serve against SF and Seattle. Both those teams still scare me on offense because of Martz/Holmgren. However at home they are less threat.

Then you enter the 4 tough games. The ones Cowlishaw claims are going to sink the Cowboys (his recent column stated the Boys would likely be 8-4, but then would be sunk by that 4 game stretch).

I think, if you say the Cowboys aren’t likely to take 2 out of 4 of those games you’re probably crazy. Then you just hope 10-6 gets it done. But if they get to 8-4, they’re once again playing with house money and I’ll sure as hell be a lot more relaxed.

There’s not one of those 4 games I dont think we can win. Including the Giants. Pitt is not what they used to be, that game is the easy one.

I note this is the yearly “3 games in 11 days” stretch for the boys. I thought before Sundays game, how much more we’ll known in 11 days..

So as long as you have the OC and DC

Head Coach and players can be mediocre and you still can win.

Yes

Head coach is totally meaningless.

I laugh every time I look at Coughlin and all the credit he gets in NY. That dufus is no less dufus than he was when the NY media wanted his head on a platter not so long ago.

But now suddenly he’s such a great coach. Gee, what changed???

Also, there are no mediocre players, in the NFL..there’s very, very, little talent differentiation…everybody is 6’4" and runs very fast. Everybody.

The QB is the one place you see the most, obviously..

But the change is I used to put it all on the OC. I’m coming to realize in the last few weeks, DC is probably just as important.

Jen Floyd Engel

I used to stick up for this chick but now I cant stand her.

First of all, something innately bugs me about women commenting on a male sport like football, as if they know something about it..they cant play the game..

Second it bugs me when a young female especially harshly criticizes..like football coaches or something.

Jen has really been ripping on Wade lately and it annoys the crap out of me. You know, what the hell does she know about football??

Whether she’s right or wrong about it. I just dont want to hear it coming from her..

But anyway, I just thought it was funny because in Wades postgame presser, she asked some obnoxious question about if the penalties frustrated Wade (she’s trying to be negative about the team/Wade as usual) and he just gave the iciest answer..just said “Yes, penalties frustrate me” then looked around for the next question. Wouldn’t even look at her. I dont think he likes her..it was worth a chuckle,

Texas Tech

I was interested to find out TT had got a new DC midway through last season.

This didn’t surprise me that much..the difference in Tech this year (besides some luck) is probably that they’ve got a defense.

Leach’s offense was always there, will always be there..but what changed was probably the DC…

You so often see sudden improvement traceable to a change at a coordinator..

We’re stuck out there in Lubbock…350 miles from anything and probably have the Heisman Trophy QB, the best WR in the country, the best OLine in the Big 12, a decent defense that’s not going to kill you, one of the top 10 coaches in the country AND WE STILL CAN’T FIND A FUCKING KICKER!!!!

I think the Heisman winner

comes out of the Big 12 because it has been such a banner year for the conference. Maybe I’m a homer but I think Harrell has the inside track as of today but it’s shaky ground.

ESPN has had a hard on for Colt McCoy all year and Harrell was the much better player when they matched up. The Tech / Texas game this year was something like the 5th highest rated game in ABC television history and their most viewed game of the year so just about everybody that mattered saw it.

On that biggest stage at the biggest moment, Harrell outshined McCoy and then won the game in spectacular fashion.

Harrell has to play at least as well as Bradford this weekend to salt it away. If Tech wins the game, Harrell wins the Heisman.

I was at the game

To see 70-80K shit-talking douchebags get the life hoovered right out of their hatin little lungs was immensely satisfying, almost orgasmic.

Am I wrong for getting more joy out of their pain than my team’s win? If it is wrong, I don’t wanna be right.

Hip hip schadenfraude! Hip hip schadenfraude!

We had some pretty good volume chanting DEFENSE when the Skins had the ball during the 4th quarter. Could anybody hear it on TV?

Those who would sacrifice liberty for safety deserve neither.
