Well

Yup
In addition to the horribleness of the polls/bcs with no playoff, the conferences have some pretty stupid rules as well.
For instance: if Tech beats OSU and looses to OU (entirely plausible), Tech, OU, and UT will be in a three way tie for first place. The tiebreaker? BCS ranking. Seriously. I can’t wait to hear Mac Brown whine his way into a big game again.

Really?
Do you know how well Texas travels? We bring a TON of fans to BCS games, and a TON of money to the city that hosts whichever one we get into. You’re out of your mind if you don’t think that matters to whomever picks the teams.
Mack doesn’t whine, he argues our case, and is successful at it. AND he was right that year, as we beat Michigan in that bowl game and clearly deserved our spot. “Whining” is what you did in your last sentence…

Thanks for the bitter and irrelevant response.
My point was that relying on the openly flawed BCS ranking as a tiebreaker sucks. It promotes whining and arbitrary decisions.
Your point about how well Texas travels was a nice start though. I really hope you believe that a competitive system should decide the best football teams by the fervor and affluence of their fans.
Making decisions based on which teams have the most supportive fans is an excellent example of why the BCS is so screwed up.
Also, there are like 20-30 NCAA football teams that travel better than Texas.

irrelevant my ass, bitter absolutely
So we didn’t deserve to be in the Rose Bowl in 2004? The Rose Bowl that we won? And are you saying we don’t deserve to be in a BCS game this year?
Texas is, without a doubt, a top 5 football team in the country this year. Why on earth should we be left out of a BCS game? If there is a 3 team tie at the top of the Big 12, why should we not get the opportunity to play for the conference championship? Our schedule strength is tougher than anyone else in the Big 12, which is widely considered the best conference in the country this year.
20-30 teams!!??!! Name em.
Point me to a Mack Brown quote that is “whining”. He is paid a hell of a lot of money to coach this team, and he believed that year that his boys belonged in the Rose Bowl. And he was right. Just as he would be this year.

I'll be interested to see...
If Gary Patterson bolts if TCU gets that BCS bid. I heard someone else mention this on TV yesterday, but if they do, what else does he have left to do there? Clemson, Washington, et al could be bringing his name up in the offseason if they get to one.

Gary Patterson
He will not leave to go to Washington. TCU gets better players than they do because Texas is ground zero for recruiting. Also, Washington is a complete mess. I doubt he will leave to go to Clemson either. TCU is set for the next couple of years. I think he will hold out until a prestige college offer such as Notre Dame or a school of that prestige comes along. Urban Meyer hit the jackpot a few years ago with Florida but Clemson is not in that caliber. TCU should be on top of the mountain west for years to come and if Gary Patterson was smart he will stay around until he gets better offers.

TCU...
will be at the top with Utah and BYU for the foreseeable future, I agree. However I do believe they are losing 9 of 11 starters on defense after this season. It will be interesting to see how they are able to rebuild that defense next year.
I know there are some big Frog fans here that are more knowledgeable about the program than I. How does their recruiting look and who is on their 2nd team right now? I’d be curious to hear your thoughts?

I think Patterson getting a BCS bid would actually do more to
keep him at TCU rather than entice him to leave. They would undoubtedly get a recruiting bump, money would be flowing into the program, and he’d be due an even bigger raise than what he got recently.
Plus, he may look at what happened to Franchione when he left for what he thought was “better things” and decide he has it pretty good right now.

the TCU job is a good one no doubt
But, if a school like Florida opens up for Patterson like it did for Meyer — he’d jump at it.
I do think though that it would have to be a top tier school. He’s not going to leave for a school like Clemson or Washington (although that’s not as bad of a job as it looks right now).

University of Tennessee
I bet Patterson is at top of their list. That is one Head coaching position that Coach Patterson would consider. Garry Patterson has turned down offers before to stay at TCU. Kansas State and Clemson (two schools that are the most interested in Patterson) I believe are weak offers and are about on the same level of football prestige as TCU only differences is that they play in a BCS conference.

Penn St.-Florida NC game
Even if Texas wins out, I’ll bet the Florida jumps them (if they win out). Penn State’s got nobody left.
Tech’s still got two losses left in them — if Texas isn’t brain dead in the first half, that game’s not even close.

BCS
Penn States lack of tough schedule and their lack of a strong win in their only real test makes them not as strong in my opinion. Also they don’t have a conference championship game in the Big 10. If Tech does in fact lose twice then Texas would play in the Conf Championship game most likely against a Top 15 Missouri team. Another impressive performance there and they would jump Penn State.
Florida does look like a good bet with the way they whooped Georgia. But they do have the SEC championship game left and that could be a trip up.
Personally I think its gonna be a Texas/Florida championship game. Alabama is going to lose to LSU this weekend and then to Florida in the conf champ game. Tech is going to lose to OSU and OU and Texas is going to leapfrog Penn State to play Florida in the MNC game.

if Penn St's undefeated
i don’t see how you could have 2 one-loss teams jump them in the standings. They would be #1 in the human polls, and it would take a very poor showing in the computer rankings for them to slip to #3. Seeing as they are already #4, I don’t see how they fall much further – particularly with Michigan St. still on their schedule.

But seeing how terrible the Big10 is, and the computers obviously show that, i can see a one loss team jumping Penn State….even if the voters collude to put them at 1 if they win out…

If those two 1 loss teams are texas and Florida and that undefeated team is Penn State...
Its very possible. Penn State has played one decent team this year. One. And they didn’t look like the number 3 team in the nation in that game. At home against Ohio State on national television they barely survived. Texas just went through one of the most brutal stretches of scheduling in college football. I can’t think of a more brutal stretch in the last decade. Against #1 OU at a neutral site, then at home against #11 Mizzou and #7 OSU, then on the road against #6 Tech. The only loss out of that is on a last second play. If they go undefeated the rest of the way and play in the Big 12 championship game they are going to the MNC there is no question about it.
And Florida is similar to texas. Not quite as tough a schedule but They have kicked LSU and Georgias butts pretty handedly. If they beat an undefeated or one loss Alabama in the SEC champ game they will play in the MNC game no questions about it. Im sorry but just because the Big 10 used to be good doesn’t mean they can live off that glory this year when there are more deserving teams.

But you underestimate the human voters…sentiment for JoePa….12-0…etc etc

Voters
I don’t underestimate the human voters. I merely see where this is heading. The computers recognize Penn States mediocrity. Thats gonna be huge in this. Penn State may get 1st place votes but texas and Florida will also get them and the formula is based on the amount of points you have in the polls. So even though you may be #3 if you are close in points the computer rankings will put texas and Florida over the top.
And the Big 10 is a BCS conference in name only this season. What a total abortion of a conference.
