Kam Loe to Japan

Per Jerry Crasnick:

Texas Rangers pitcher Kameron Loe has become the latest major leaguer to leave for Japan, signing a two-year, $2 million contract with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of the Pacific League, said a baseball source.

Should be official today, meaning the 40-man sits at 36.  That means that Vallejo, Mayberry, Poveda, and Strop can all be added if the Rangers wish them to be.  We'll see if there are any John Bannister complications, as well.  The Rangers will get some cash in return, so this is a decent move to clear up some space.

Sweet

I meant to comment on the 40-man thread that I’d like to see Loe, Littleton or Mendoza dropped to make room for Poveda. We know what we have with those guys, and I don’t think many will shed tears over losing them.

I guess my question is, did we outright Kam or sell his rights to Japan? Either way, best of luck to him.

Quite a Raise

What was he making last year? $365k? Best of luck to him; met him and chit chatted with him a year or so ago, he seemed like a good dude.

(Because I have no idea where to get such stats), I seem to recall it was something just awful like .240/.280/.400

Not a big fan of this move

I still think Loe could have been a valuable member of the pitching staff. He posted a 3.95 ERA as a reliever the last 3 years in about 80+ IP. He also was not that terrible as a starter (posting significantly lower FIP and DIPS numbers than his ERA). As a ground ball pitcher, he seemed to be the victim of bad defense. He also seemed to make some real improvements in his brief time in the majors last year.

At the very least, this move will not come back to bite the Rangers anytime soon, since he won’t be pitching with another MLB team for a while. Either way, I would have rather seen the Rangers keep Loe at the expense of Poveda, Strop, or Bannister.

by Stephen Rushin on Nov 20, 2008 12:53 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He wasn't particularly good

as a reliever. ERA isn’t a good measure, because a lot of a reliever’s effectiveness comes down to how they handle inherited runners.

He had a 1.5 WHIP, and his past few ARPs were

2008 -3.3
2007 -3.2
2006 0

He simply has never shown anything in the majors.

Generally speaking...

…you let a guy go to Japan because he wants to go, and he isn’t really in your plans.

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 20, 2008 2:10 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well sure

it has been very clear for some time that Loe was not in the Ranger’s long-term plans. I wish Loe the best and hope he can do well in Japan and find his way back to the US. Nevertheless, I still think he was the victim of a bad defense, and he could have been a decent long-man or swing man. In that role, I think his adjusted runs prevented from scoring numbers are a little less important.

Either way, he probably wasn’t going to be an integral part of this organization going forward, so it isn’t a big deal. I would have just liked to have seen him in our bullpen as a long-man, but I guess with Feldman/Rupe/Nippert, there probably wasn’t any room for him. Oh well, he was always one of my favorite pitchers.

How lucky he is

getting to pig out on gyoza whenever he wants and with his wingspan he could be anywhere in Fukuoka and all he has to do is stretch his arms out and at least one of his hands would end up poking into a ramen bar.

I bet “Sukini Kyojin” automatically becomes the tallest person in Japan too. Hope he has a great time.

Per Rosenthal:
The Rangers have sold the rights to right-hander Kameron Loe to the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in Japan, and Loe has agreed to a contract with the Hawks in the two-year, $2 million range. Loe, 27, wants to be a starter, and the Hawks will give him that opportunity. He split time between the majors and minors last season, going 3-5 with a 5.59 ERA in 26 games at Class AAA and 1-0 with a 3.23 ERA in 14 relief …

That sounds more like Kam is on board with it. If that is the case, than good for him.

With the possibility of him coming back to the Rangers in 2 years if he performs well? Since everyone is calling Japan 4A, maybe it’s another step in his development. /semi-sarcasm

Well it's a possibility

that he could come back to the Rangers, sure. But, if he plays out the 2 year contract in Japan, he’d be a free agent and could sign with anyone.

He’s likely to make more money over there for longer than he would over here.

Ganbatte kudasai, Loe-san!

"Yeah, like I had a chance there" - Lancaster batter, after striking out against Derek Holland

Sad to see Loe go...

But it seemed as though he didn’t fit here. He wanted to be a starter but we wanted to make him a reliever. Its just the best for both worlds.

Now time to see a duel of the tall beasts of Botts vs. Loe in Japan. It will be something like Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla over there…I can see now all the people running from it

Loe

It isn’t that the Rangers wanted to make him a reliever, it is that he wasn’t good enough to be a starter. He had one main pitch, which he couldn’t throw for strikes. His breaking ball was too inconsistent to get hitters out as well.

Yep, he had ample opportunity here...

…I don’t think he has a right to leave Texas feeling he wasn’t given a fair shot at a ML career.

Physician: Primum non nocere

Batter: First, make no out

They didn't make him a reliever

But he was better suited for it. Thats why they wanted him to move to it

no brainer

It is a no brainer for Loe. He gets $900K for the 1st season ans a cool $1M for the second with a $200K buyout. It is doubtful he would ever get that kind of money in the MLs.

Nolan Ryan should be the Rangers president, GM, manager and pitching coach.
