LSB Community Prospect Project: #3

2 down, a lot more to go.

After 271 votes, Neftali Feliz has won the right to be called the LSB Community #2 prospect!

That was about as one sided as I think I've ever seen one of these.

The list so far:
1. LHP, Derek Holland.
2. RHP, Neftali Feliz

Time to move on to the next vote.

This one should be a little more tightly contested.

The polls are open, so go ahead and vote in the poll at the bottom and feel free to make any suggestions and/or criticisms in the comments below.

And please don't hesitate to tell me you want on the list for next time.

NOTE: There has been some speculation as to what the criteria are for this vote. Should guys who have spent time in the bigs be involved in "prospect" discussions? For the sake of this exercise we're taking what the guys have done in the big leagues and using the BA prospect formula of 130 AB's or 50 ip. If a guy is under those limits, he's still a prospect and he goes on the poll. It's that simple.

by TheBZA on Nov 20, 2008 1:56 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yup

Weird, how we vote for two pitchers that could be great but might just be OK yet Smoak, who is pretty much a given to succeed, falls to #3. Don’t get me wrong, I too voted for Nefti and Holland at 1 and 2, but why? I know the answer – our pitching sucks – but still, a baseball player’s a baseball player. Guy might not be in the lineup except for 1 in 5 games.

Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

by WyoRanger on Nov 20, 2008 4:20 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why

Because great hitters are relatively common compared to great pitchers. Its far more likely Smoak realizes his potential than Main, Feliz, and Holland combined. But any of those three hitting their potential will be far more valuable than Smoak hitting his. You really only get about one pitcher a year in MLB gaining the “Ace” label. There are always a half dozen or so hitters who get that.

I don’t think this is just because our team can’t pitch – I think its just that great pitching is a rare thing. Of course that rarity means that the odds that any of these kids gains that level are very small. But unlike any Rangers prospects who I can remember (other than maybe Volquez), these guys all have the potential to get to that level. Just having guys at this point is a rare thing, having hitters like Smoak in the minors isn’t.

I think it is very hard to compare hitters and pitchers for this reason. But I value “great pitcher potential” very highly, especially once they have shown it at multiple levels in the system.

Joining the Smoak bandwagon

Despite the small sample size, Smoak’s AFL performance has eliminated the one small concern that I had about the guy – namely, can he hit with a wooden bat against very good pitching?

If he had a few more at-bats, then he would rank 4th in the AFL in OBP, 11th in BA, and 13th in OPS. His offensive numbers are superior to the AFL numbers of Wieters, Austin Jackson, Blanks, Halman, Arencibia, Valaika, Mills, Doolittle, Wallace, Reddick, Arencibia, Cardenas, Trumbo, Triunfal, and de Jesus. The “prospect” with AFL numbers that are most similar to Smoak’s 370/482/565/1047 is Daniel Murphy (397/487/619/1106) who played 49 games for the Mets last year and batted 313/397/473/871 in the majors.

I like Main, but Smoak has perennial all-star written all over him.

I never doubted

that he would hit with a wooden bat. All you have to do is look at this swing. He really creates a whipping motion with the barrel. Loose wrists, until they stiffen up at contact. I just never imagined he would make THIS kind of splash.

He should be in the top 30

The guy is on the 40 man roster. I imagine JMJ would have gone in the low 20s; so GG should as well.

Don’t need to put him on the vote list for a while though

Good to hear.

I probably would have too, just because I can’t imagine Mayberry ever being more than a 4th outfielder for the Royals.

I'm up for making this a big one

Deepest and best farm system in baseball means the fans have to step up their games in a community prospect.

Ceiling

Depends if you’re voting for ceiling. Golson’s ceiling is higher than Vallejo’s and arguably higher than Borbon since he has some pop. It’s just the plate discipline that absolute dooms him.

Golson

Just updated my prospect rankings, and he sits at #25. That’s 7 slots higher than JMJ was, so it’s not that significant either way. The overall tools are just better.

You are such a rec whore this time of year with these polls. There is nothing worse than looking up at the rec diaries and seeing nothing other than your ugly mug.

Um, I think you mean, "Handsome Visage", but point taken.

Maybe at this time of year I should change my profile pick to something more prospecty.

I’ll see what I can do.

I can send you a link to buy one of my handmade Derek Jeter bags.

They’re less than $1,000 each and each one is guaranteed to be as awesome as one-and-a-half jump throws.

I remember at the end of last season

everyone gave AJM crap for ranking Smoak so high….look who’s the man now!

AJM

had him real high, like 3. And people gave him crap cause Smoak hadn’t played a game yet for the Rangers…looks like AJM was dead on.

There were many here

who ranked him that high, not just Adam. I don’t recall anyone saying he wouldn’t rank near that high, just that they refused to vote for him until he signed.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on Nov 21, 2008 1:03 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Exactly...

I had him ranked 3rd as well. I do remember a couple LSBers that refused to put him that high only because he wasn’t signed. I don’t think anyone here ever doubted the talent Smoak has.

It wasn't because

he hadn’t played a game with the Rangers.

It’s that he wasn’t signed, and wasn’t even a Ranger.

the only crap

I remember about ranking smoak was because he was unsigned and not a Ranger. Nothing to do with his tools.
