Mayberry traded to Philadelphia

The Rangers traded John Mayberry Jr. to Philadelphia for outfielder Greg Golson. It's a swap of first-round picks. Mayberry was drafted in the first round in 2005 and Golson in 2004.

Golson spent last season in Double A and made his major league debut as a September call-up.

don't know anything about Golson. Anyone got a scouting report on him?

After looking at his stats, I am disappointed that we didn't get more for JMJ and maybe we should have given him one more year to develope, but this move really doesn't make much sense to me.

Was his home field pretty hitter friendly? Because his stats were considerably better at home.

Though I’ll admit, I’m a little disappointed we didn’t give Mayberry one more year to straighten it out.

#7 phillies prospect last year

7. Greg Golson, of Born: Sept. 17, 1985 • B-T: R-R • Ht: 6-0 • Wt: 190
Drafted: HS—Austin, 2004 (1st round) • Signed by: Steve Cohen
Greg GolsonBackground: The Phillies have preached patience with Golson since signing him for $1.475 million as the 21st overall pick in 2004. While he still has a long way to go before he’s a finished product, he took another step in the right direction in 2007. He finally reached Double-A in late July, and set career in hits, doubles, homers, RBIs and steals.

Strengths: Golson’s five-tool package makes him the system’s top athlete. His plus-plus speed stands out the most, as he can get from the right side of the plate to first base in less than 4.0 seconds. He also provides above-average raw power, center-field defense and arm strength.

Weaknesses: Golson’s ability to recognize pitches remains his biggest liability. He especially struggles with breaking balls, and tends to get tangled up thinking about what he should do at the plate rather than just seeing the ball and cutting loose. His 49-2 strikeout-walk ratio in Double-A is indicative of his problems, and he led the minors with 173 strikeouts.

The Future: Golson possesses the tools of a young Ron Gant, but he’ll need to show he can make consistent hard contact and take pitches if he’s going to move beyond Double-A. The Phillies think he can play a big league center field right now, and if everything clicks offensively, he could move extremely fast.

I went to high school with this guy

and played baseball with him. If he can put all his tools together, he could be a good major league player. Of course, you could say the same about JMJ.

Holy Crap!

rotoworld is FAST! Some notes:

Greg Golson-OF – Rangers Aug. 31 – 10:12 pm et

Phillies purchased the contract of outfielder Greg Golson from Double-A Reading.
The 22-year-old Golson had his most promising season since being drafted in the first round in 2004, but he still hit a rather mediocre .282/.333/.434 with 23 steals for Reading. The Phillies will use him primarily as a pinch-runner. It seems unlikely that he’ll get any starts.
Greg Golson-OF – Rangers Apr. 6 – 3:55 am et

Greg Golson had three hits, including a triple, and four stolen bases Saturday for Double-A Reading.
Golson still oozes tools, so the Phillies continue to keep their fingers crossed and hope that he’ll turn into a baseball player. The 2004 first-rounder hit .273/.305/.426 with a 173/23 K/BB ratio and 30 steals while spending most of last year at Single-A Clearwater

Gaah!
Rangers acquired outfielder Greg Golson from the Phillies for outfielder John Mayberry Jr.
We’re not all that surprised that the Rangers traded Mayberry when they’re facing a crunch for 40-man roster spots. However, Golson does nothing to alleviate it, as he’ll be placed on the roster after making his major league debut in September. Golson’s tools still impress and the Rangers are always looking for center field options, but there’s little reason to think he’d be able to handle more than a fifth outfielder’s role. He struck out 130 times in 106 games while hitting .281/.333/.434 in Double-A last season. He’s a far better athlete than he is a baseball player.

Rotoworld seems mighty impressed, eh?

Golson

I saw Golson in person with Reading this summer. I have to say that his ceiling is definitely higher than JMJ. It might take all 3 option years, but Golson is worth a shot. He just turned 23 in September, so he’s got those extra years.

As for pure skills, the game I saw had the true range of Golson-like performances. He struck out, played a great center field, and hit an absolute bomb to left. The guy was clearly the most athletic guy on the field. However, it just looked like he was relying purely on the athleticism and not on any learned baseball skills. That’s a big worry, but I think time is in our favor. I say this is a good move to try and get a higher ceiling player. We weren’t counting on JMJ being a starting corner outfielder anytime soon anyway.

But I agree that it is the type of move that JD does well at. I trust him with these types of deals.

I also like that he did something – it engenders confidence that he’s not gunshy. Making trades like this shows teams like Boston that JD is willing to make a deal if the deal is fair. And it continues to develop the Phillies – Rangers relationship. The Phils are a comparable NL team to the Rangers – similar size markets, similar style ballclubs. I like the fact that JD is developing relationships in the league like that.

Half assing

I was referencing the results, not necessarily his attitude or work ethic. He’s too old to not be producing at a very high level in AAA. Golson is younger, more time to work things out. I fail to see any reason for Mayberry optimism at this point.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on Nov 20, 2008 11:43 PM CST up reply actions

Mayberry was a big risk for a Jason Botts like experience

This organization has had far too many guys with flawed hitting approaches that do well in the minors and don’t do well in the majors. Botts. Cruz. I think JMJ was one of those (though to be fair, his hitting approach didn’t really do so well in the minors either).

Those guys are just headaches for an organization. You play them, they struggle. You bench them, you have crazy bloggers having fits because they’re not getting the opportunity they “deserve.” JD is smart to eliminate the aggravation before it sets in.

If you don’t think a player has the potential to be a major league contributor, you need to get rid of him for someone who has that potential. It isn’t surprising that the Rangers gave up hope on Mayberry – he just looked like a 4A player. I know you liked him, but keeping him around because he may be able to hit lefties in the bigs isn’t that strong an argument. Should have just kept Sosa then.

I really agree with you. He’s the Drew Meyer of outfielders.

by JBImaknee on Nov 21, 2008 12:04 PM CST up reply actions

Neither Did I

I guess we agree on something. That was a deal that really did seem dumb at the time with the whole lefty vs. righty issue. When everybody acts like both prospects are on a similar level of playing ability why trade the guy who throws from the left side when lefties historically play better at the Ballpark. Seemed goofy then and just flat out depressing now… but what you can’t get in your head is that Daniels has improved since then.

I just wonder how you can think something like this is dumb. I can understand not liking the deal but however you cut it the thinking behind the deal is solid. They both have similar problem issues but Golson is younger and more toolsy… so not only does he have a longer time to figure it out but he should have a much higher ceiling then Mayberry if they both do. Even if you think Mayberry is overall better of a prospect at least you should be able to understand the thinking behind the trade and why it’s not “dumb”.

by TRanger on Nov 21, 2008 6:47 AM CST up reply actions

I think its "dumb"

because Mayberry was never given a shot to play in the majors and overall, Mayberry has much better stats than Golson even if he is only 2 years younger.

I would rather have just kept JMJ and given him a full year at OKC. Not really impressed with this kid, but then JMJ wasn’t exactly tearing it up either. Oh well.

So.. how do our CFers stack up defensively?

Borbon: pulled from game November 17th.

Golson: acquiring November 21st.

Is there a Borbon trade coming?

so most likely Borbon had a slight tweak of something….

But its more fun to speculate… Let me go get mu tinfoil hat and we can go look for aliens too….

OT

It looks like a 3 team deal is going down in the NBA:

Knicks get: Tim Thomas, Cuttino Mobley, and Al Harrington

Clippers get: Zach Randolph

Golden State gets: Jamal Crawford

Mardy Collins goes somewhere. Unclear at this point.

So NY gets some “meh” players who might help them win but, more importantly, all expire in time for LeBron.

Crawford will help GS. I guess Randolph will make Clips a little better.

by brettgardner on Nov 21, 2008 12:11 PM CST reply actions

I'd

Either trade him for a 2nd or buy him out.

If you’re looking for a player trade, I doubt you’d do much better than Malik Rose.

by brettgardner on Nov 21, 2008 12:25 PM CST up reply actions

Also

Maybe it’s crazy talk, but I wonder if we took Tinsley’s contract off their hands, would Indiana give us Rush for Stack?

by brettgardner on Nov 21, 2008 12:34 PM CST up reply actions

Looks like it's just Crawford for Harrington.

But Ny newspaper says Knicks are working on a trade that would send Randolph to Dallas…

If you put everything together… Randolph to the Clips, Kaman to Dallas, but who to the Knicks?

How about a SG Cubes? Randolph will help, but now he’ll make Damp even more useless.

I dont believe there is anyway we end up with Randolph

It does seem

Like a flip scenario, no? Randolph+ to be parlayed into Kaman and Mobley, perhaps?

Now THAT’d be something worth talking about.

by brettgardner on Nov 21, 2008 2:13 PM CST up reply actions

Im thinkin'

Randolph to the Clips, Kaman to Dallas, and Tim Thomas, Bass, and Stackhouse to the Knicks.

Singleton and Williams.

May play Diop and Kaman together every now and then as well.

Oofa.

That’s a lot of black holes on offense.

If we’re going to make a trade, we need to concentrate on a decent SG or at least a good backup PG.

by brettgardner on Nov 21, 2008 2:28 PM CST up reply actions

That will come next

When we trade Dampier.

I like Damp at this point. He’s a very good rebounder, which is something we need if we’re going to be “running”.

But

If we have Kaman, and can get something useful with Damp, we will be better off.

Looks like they delt Randolph to the Clippers

for Thomas and Cuttino..

Which would have to make Kaman available, but means it would probably cost Josh Howard.

From a salary perspective

This deal works:

Clips get: Randolph/Dampier
Knicks get: Thomas/Stackhouse
Mavs get: Kaman/Mobley

Leaves Knicks with just Jeffries $6M salary after 09-10 season.

OK going to get hammered for this

if Golson can hit the 280/330/ 440 like he did this year in AA it is almost a carbon copy of Carl Crawford for his career.

Crawford also average 100 K’s per year and bout 30 BB.

Teach this kid to have a little bit better approach of breaking pitches and he has all talent to be an amazing CF.

Not to say it will happen, but that is his ceiling if not better.

It falls back to take the younger talent that is the better defender at the harder to fill defensive position. I like this move even more….

I saw Mayberry with the South Bend Silverhawks against the

White Michigan Whitecaps a few years back. The umpires for the league were on strike and the umpiring for the game was horrible. Mayberry hit a first inning home run that was at least 40 feet fair and the umpire called it foul! LOL…. The whole home crowd booed even though it was in Grand Rapids… My friend and I just looked at each other in disbelief and joined in on the booing of the ump.

Well, late that game he hit one out in dead center and we gave him a standing ovation. Ubelieveably, the fill-in umpires got that call right!

Not sure what I think of the trade…… hopefully its not like that HR call.

hi t ball.... :)

Neither one was a cheap shot either, he knocked the stuffing out of the ball both times. While I was obviously rooting for West Michigan, I don’t like to see calls like this one. I do wish him success.
