Mayberry traded for Golson
The Rangers have trade John Mayberry, Jr., to the Phillies for Greg Golson.
This is a swap of disappointing first round picks who play the outfield.
Sickels gave Golson a C+ a couple of weeks ago. Lots of tools, no one knows if he'll ever hit.

Feel sorry for him?
Why? Because he decided to behave like a spoiled teenager when he got drafted instead of taking professional baseball seriously?
He gets a massive fail.

Thats exactly why i feel sorry for him
He probably made some wrong decisions and now he’s paying for it.

I don't feel sorry for anyone who makes bad decisions
after getting a $3 million check as an 18 year old. If I were going to feel sorry for anyone, it’d be the Padres, but then they should have known better, or their fans, but Padre fans are generally too dumb to know what happened.
But then again, I’m just a mean, cold-hearted person.

Maybe
Boston simply didn’t want Mayberry or Boggs. Or maybe that has nothing to do with it, since the Philadelphia SBN blogger writes that Amaro preferred the power potential of Mayberry to the tools of Golson.
Giving it some thought, this trade probably isn’t done in isolation. It either enables something else, or is a backfill for something else. Least curious, it could just be filling the system with an AA outfielder so Frisco has a flycatcher.

Don’t know much about Golson, but a speedy, defensive CFer with no bat seems to have a lot of value to some teams. Maybe (with a little work) we can turn this guy into a Coco Crisp clone and flip him.

BA's 2008 profile
"Golson’s5-tool package makes him the system’s top athlete. His plus plus speed stands out the most…and he can get to first in 4.0 seconds. He has above average: raw power, CF defense and arm strength. Pitch recognition and breaking balls are his weakness as a hitter. Led the minors with 173 SO in 2007. Reminds of a young Ron Gant but needs to make consistent hard contact and take pitches to progress past AA. The phillies think he can play a ML CF right now…

12) Greg Golson, OF, Grade C+: Most people will think this ranking is too low, but I still have serious doubts about his bat. Has made some progress but discipline remains dreadful.

Sounds like a guy that could benefit from working with Rudy. He’s younger, faster, plays better defense and has a plus arm.

good observation. if you take out june and july, in which he only had about 100 ABs total, his numbers were pretty damn good. he started off on fire, perhaps the league learned how to feed him breaking balls, but he seemed to rebound well in August.
This is one of those minor deals that tend to make me nervous, but I like this one.

okay
this is my guess.
A few years ago JD realized that catchers were going to be the valuable commodity in the near future, and now, that is going to pay off big for him. And well, he’s collecting him some centerfielders now, and soon enough he will be able to use that wealth for trades.
Yep. JD’s superpower is to see the future trade market for certain positions.

you get a guy who is 2-3 yrs younger than JMJ with the same type of label… A 1st rounder with alot of talent who hasnt figured it out. Why not have a guy who’s younger?
I really, really doubt a guy like JMJ was going to get any time whatsoever in our OF. Id like to see someone point out how the heck he was gonna get anytime out there with 4 team controlled OFs already ahead of him and Byrd and Borbon also likely ahead of him. Give this guy another year to see if he cant figure out in AA and he’s still a year or two younger than JMJ.
I really dont know anything that JMJ has done in the minors to point to him ever really being a big league player

i think JMJ will turn out to be an average ML OF'er
and Golson will be a 5th OF’er at best. Would the trade still be worth the risk at that point?

I think
some people are overthinking this with the trade spinning, master plans, etc. This team has Hamilton in one corner and a slew of decent players in the other spots, but no pure defensive CF outside of Borbon anywhere on the radar (Beltre just turned 19 and is still capable of single digit walk seasons). These two are very similar in that they are on the cusp of the majors and have a good deal of physical talent, but are still pretty raw and both stand a good chance of never making it because they are not gifted hitters. The Rangers need the CF, Philly likes the corner guy for their situation.
There is presumably some scouting preference involved, but this is just a depth chart move for equivalent, fringy players, imo. Maybe one of them will make it, but no one has any idea which one, including us and all of major league baseball.
by Brett Perryman on Nov 20, 2008 10:49 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I think Maybery is a pretty safe bet to be a lefty-mashing okay-defensive COF in the bigs.
But those are dime a dozen. You can literally get right handed sluggers who can’t hit RHP but slug LHP off the waiver wire.
Golson is much less likely to be an effective big leaguer, imo. But there’s actual ceiling with Golson. I could see Golson maturing into an effective big league starter. It’s just not very bloody likely is all.

JD's comments via DMN
He said that the trade of Mayberry for Golson was about a change of scenery for both players. The knock on Golson is a bunch of strikeouts in the minor leagues. Daniels said he’s a five-tool player and if they can get his bat in order and make him a smarter hitter, he could reach his potential. I say it’s worth the try. This could work out for both teams.

I like it. JMJ has zero chance of ever becoming a above average ML player. We picked up a younger player with better tools that can play CF. He might never pan out, but if he does, his upside is much higher.

I was never a fan of Mayberry
I kept hearing about his raw talent, and there is no way a player with a major league father, and a Stanford Cardinal ought to be raw. Raw means incapable of learning baseball with the access to coaching that he has had.
I don’t want to hear about College players raw talent. That will work for High Schoolers, or Latin American players, not for first round draft pick College students.

Yep
Just can’t understand why anyone picks a major college player who doesn’t have developed hitting skill. That’s the whole beauty of drafting a college player to begin with, that you have a better idea that he’ll hit than you can a HS guy.

Yeah, a college prospect
might be fine in the 30th round, but it was insane to hear the Rangers drafted a college project who needed to retool his swing as a first round pick. When I heard that nonsense I was wondering whose brilliant idea that was. Whoever brought that up should have been fired on the spot.
How does a major league franchise think thats a good idea, especially a couple years after the Drew Meyer fiasco.
