Friday a.m. things
The news of this morning, of course, is the trade and the roster moves, which we discussed yesterday at some length.
Richard Durrett runs down the moves and has some quotes in the DMN this morning.
Jon Daniels says that, from what they were hearing, there was a chance they could lose both Willie Eyre and John Bannister in the Rule 5 draft, which is what prompted the decision to add them to the 40 man roster.
The Boston Globe says that Jarrod Saltalamacchia is impressing in the Dominican Winter League.
Durrett also has some bloggy notes from Daniels, with Daniels saying the team doesn't know what they're going to do with Frank Catalanotto this offseason, and that they aren't optimistic about filling third base on the free agent market.

God forbid
We should lose Willie Eyre in the rule 5.

Ability and image will make Teixeira’s price staggering. He is a slugging (.552 percentage last season) and on-base (.410) machine whose boy-next-door demeanor and looks make him an ideal franchise face.

3B
With regards to trading for the M’s Beltre to fill 3B, I thought this would depend on the direction the team is looking to go once they hire a manager. Well, they have a manager, but no official word on what the team will do. In Keith Law’s chat yesterday, he said that Beltre’s peak value will be this winter, and assumes he gets traded. If the Rangers aren’t looking to free agency for 3B, then Beltre becomes all the more enticing (assuming they don’t fill the position internally). Of course, there are other trade candidates who don’t cost as much.

Yep
I’m pretty vehemently opposed to a Beltre trade because 1) it sends valuable prospects to a division rival for 2) one year of Beltre in 3) a year we’ve still only got an outside shot at contending in since we’re not signing any high-price FA’s.
Beltre: just say no.

Boston Globe
As others have touched on before, it seems that local papers are often PR machines for local clubs. This is due to the fact that, among other things, local papers rely on club sources for breaking news and need to keep a good relationship with the team. With the good press we’ve seen from Boston papers regarding Salty, it looks to me like the Sox are softening up the fan base for a trade. Here’s hoping something like Buch or Masterson/Bowden for Salty is becoming near.

I think this makes sense
If Theo has already decided to pay JD what he wants, he has to make sure that the media treats it as a win for Epstein. Success in Boston is very much about perception – if Salty goes in with the fans angry they traded for him, he’ll have trouble, and Theo will not have the necessary time to stick with him. But if he’s celebrated on his way into town, then the fans will give him the opportunity to succeed.
If we see the Globe reporting that Buccholz sucks, then we’ll know that a deal has been agreed on, or at least Theo is definitely going to do it.

Duran
I forgot about Duran. Prepare for the epic ST battle between Metcalf and Duran. Alternatively, the BoSox could sign Teix and trade Lowell.
I’ve been trying to come up with a trade scenario that fits with the Rangers. Mabye a Laird+Borbon for Lowell+Bowden+Cash could work for both? That gives the Rangers time to get Satly’s trade value back up and the Red Sox get a replacement for Crisp as 4th OF/insurance for Ellsbury. Lowell’s contract is up after 2010 when Young could move over.

Why would the Red Sox want a CF who is a year away from the bigs when they have a guy under team control for 5 more years?
Borbon is going to be a starter in the majors whether its here or elsewhere.

Yah they don't need Borbon at all.
Borbon’s value is as a plus defense CF’er, so he’d be wasted in Boston behind Tacoby.
They could have some interest in Byrd though as a high character guy who could back up all three OF positions (as well as DH a little) and give those guys some rest throughout the season.
But Lowell has a no-trade that he ain’t waiving to come here, so we should probably not waste too much time on it.

Metcalf
It is common for fans to blindly believe in a player’s ultimate capabilities despite stats, tools, and/or performance that indicate otherwise, and Metcalf is one of those guys for me. I don’t think he will ever be a stud, but I do think he is capable of hitting with enough power (keeping his OPS up around .775 – .800) and playing solid enough defense to make him serviceable for a few years. From the reports we have heard, he is hanging out with the Young, Kinsler, Murphy crowd this offseason, a collective of hard working overachievers, and it would not surprise me at all for him to have a very Murphian coming out party next year.

Metcalf
Here’s the thing…
Minor league OPS the past three years:
2006 — 623
2007 — 729
2008 — 670
by Adam J. Morris on Nov 21, 2008 10:10 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
like i said
I can’t really support it. But he definitely seems to become a better player in the big leagues. Power is the real wild card. Over the last two years, he has amassed 526 ABs in the minors and 217 in the big leagues, and he hit a HR every 43.8 ABs in the minors and every 19.7 ABs in the bigs.
I did notice that his OPS crept up steadily throughout the year last year in OKC, as he was recovering from the injury he suffered after a torrid start in spring training last year, so I would like to see what he can do in a full, healthy season. It isn’t ideal, but I don’t see many alternatives that I like.

true
but they were spread out over two years. in both cases, he came up and performed well above his minor league numbers, and in both cases he was up in the fall so he played a lot of games against our division rivals, which means they saw him enough to develop a decent scouting report on him.
There is a disconnect between what I have seen and his minor league stats. He seems to have a clue at the plate; he seems capable of being the sort of hitter who can stay above water against good stuff and then punish mistakes. Ideally, he starts off in AAA and if he gets off to a hot start, he comes up. The problem is we have no one on our roster who is willing and able to play 3B while we wait. If the market plays out right, Crede could be an option…
by clark on Nov 21, 2008 10:54 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Well above his minor league numbers..
All he did was have a power surge, which is even less reliable over a small sample size than the other batting stats. He has a .300 OBP in the mlb thus far.

Cat
Again I hate sounding like a Cat apologist or that I want him on this team. Thats not the case necessarily. But if we cannot find some other team to take his contract off our hands I really have a hard time thinking we are just going to release him and still have to pay him. I don’t think the rangers want to bring a young guy up who just sits on the bench and doesn’t play. And if we have to pay him I don’t see us releasing him, while still paying him, and then going out and paying some other veteran guy a million or so to come and barely play. Without looking hard at the roster I don’t think we will be in the position of having to make a decision on either Cat or some young guy whos out of options now that Loe and Littleton are off the 40. Now I won’t argue if you want to complain about dropping either of them in favor of Cat but its not an easy argument seeing as how cat isn’t really in their way. I don’t see us keeping 8 relievers which means those two were blocked by other guys already in the pen. Right now i don’t see any position player in the minors I think could not only play in the majors but play well in such a sparingly role or who wouldn’t be best served playing everyday in the minors.

Once we signed Blalock
that gave us 2 players who can’t play much defense and can’t hit lefties. We have space for one of them as DH, which would be Blalock.
Cat isn’t much of a bench bat, because he platoons the wrong side for our lineup. We really don’t need another guy who can only hit righties. Most likely we will have a 4 man bench, and we need a backup catcher, MIF, OF, and CIF.
I just don’t see how we squeeze Cat in.

I disagree about our bench
I think we only will carry a 4th OF, a backup C, a utility IF, and then Cat. The guys we have for utility IF can play all 4 IF positions. If you think about it MY and Kinsler don’t DH so when healthy they are in the field. Our backup IF will mainly be used I imagine at 3B. At 1B if CD needs a day off Blalock steps in.
Like I said I don’t necessarily want to keep cat but if the choice is keeping Cat and letting a guy like Duran play everyday in OKC or releasing Cat (still paying him his salary mind you) and having Duran sit the bench and maybe get 200 ABs then I say keep Cat. The money is already spent so why not do whats best for the organization. My feeling is whats best for the organization is not to have a young guy with potential sit on the bench when they could be playing everyday in the minors and either getting better for you or increasing their trade value to another team.

If Blalock can’t DH Cat’s it. Even moreso with JMJ gone.
