Sunday morning stuff
Quiet weekend on the Rangers front.
Jim Reeves has some Rangers notes in his column today, including some discussion of a couple of new rows of seats that are being added by the dugouts at TBIA. Reeves implies that the new seats (resulting in a little less foul ground) is going to mean more losses for the Rangers.
And...that's about it today. After nothing yesterday.

More Seats?
Why would they want to add more seats? They have enough problems getting enough people in the ones they already have.

I don’t think this is that big of a deal. The lower amount of foul ground affects both teams.

Yeah
The main thing I get out of this is, once again, how ridiculous is it that 50 people have to lose front row seats so that freaking Selig and his entourage can drop in. Cuban is right on this one, screw the league office not the fans when it comes to their hard earned seats.
I kind of know someone who has a handful of those front row seats. They’re just a family, not purchasing them through a corporation like most of those who can afford to sit down there. The Rangers have been trying to do whatever they can to chase off individuals from that area, because in Hicks’ and his guys’ eyes, only corporate people belong down there, regardless of who can afford it. They’ve hung in there because they’ve had them since around the beginning of the Rangers, but I wouldn’t be surprised if one of those emails was from them. I bet they’re really pissed. But I bet that the Rangers couldn’t care less about that. Their problem is selling third and fourth level seating, not selling a few companies on seats in the first couple of rows.
Also, if you’ve sat down on that first row, it is incredible how crunched they are. So first the Rangers make those seats the least comfortable to sit in anywhere in the new stadium, for the people who pay the most, and they tell them it’s just arthitecture, and there’s nothing they could do about it. THEN they slide in a couple of rows in front of them and make them more spacious.
How do these guys retain any fans?

It's not like they're buidling a fourth deck or something to hold spillover. Adding more good seat alwasy seems like a good idea, imo.
Maybe I’m a seat snob, but I honestly don’t see the appeal of the upper deck seats.
Most of the time I’d rather watch on TV than sit way up in the nose bleeds. (Playoffs are a different story. I’d kill three puppies for a playoff seat to a Rangers game. ANY seat. And the World Series? Fuhgedaboudit. You don’t want to know the carnage I’d wreak for a seat to that shiznit.)

Thats not the point
Yes they are adding seats that are closer but in doing so are pushing the people who used to have front row seats to now having 3rd and 4th row seats. It may not sound like alot but it kinda is. And to say to them that it would cost about $8000 per seat more to move up 2 rows is ridiculous. Oh and on top of that money if the rangers do make the playoffs you aren’t guaranteed your seats so one of Bud Seligs cronies can have a good seat.

I understand.
And I guess I’m a bit sympathetic. But they’re not being pushed back, just pushed in front-of. They are still just as close to the action. Losing the cachet of having true front row seats does suck, but it’s not a huge ridiculous deal breaker to me, and the Rangers are at least trying to do something to make it right it would seem:
As a consolation, if they want to stay where they are in what will be the new third row, their seat prices will be reduced from their current $71 per seat to $45 per game.
They certainly didn’t have to do that.
As long as the seats in front don’t obstruct their views, it could certainly be considered a raw deal for those people, but it’s not a massive screw job or anything, imo.
The fact that the people who pay the premium for the new seats won’t have playoff rights is the much bigger deal, imo. Bud Selig needs to have his face burnt off in a fire. And soon.
The 40 Trumps All!!!

Buchholz manifest destiny
MLBTR says Olney had a one-liner on his blog:
“The Red Sox are preparing, full-steam ahead, to play 2009 without Jason Varitek.”
Imagine if Varitek signed elsewhere, and Teixeira landed with one of the increasing list of rumored bidding teams (which seems to grow longer each day).
It just looks more and more like a healthy, raking Saltalamacchia.
There will be a trade with Texas…it’s just about Boston freaking out enough to put Buchholz on the tabletop. Some chips are looking to fall right into place.
Go Strangers.

In case the above wasn't coherent...
I think Boston already wants Salty. And they’ll want him more if Teixeira signs elsewhere and Tek leaves, and of course if Jarrod keeps showing he’s healthy and swinging the bat well.
I’m on too much coffee.

plus i think they will ultimately realize that they have the pitching depth to make that deal, just like we have the catching depth to trade away. and when it comes down to it, they really really want salty and will be unable to say no to such a deal.

They have a lot more options than Buchholz for Salty. And I know that we’re making the case that Boston just loves Salty, but I wouldn’t get too carried away with that either. Salty is a really solid catching prospect, not Matt Wieters or Russell Martin.

Draft class
But Wieters was regarded as the #2 player in his entire draft. Salty obviously wasn’t.
by Brett Perryman on Nov 23, 2008 2:54 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think so
First of all, he was the best catching prospect in the minors at one point, but he was never viewed as a slam dunk, can’t miss franchise catcher like Wieters is, and he isn’t established like a Martin.
But more to the point, this big value dip and recovery is in this board’s head. He didn’t ever lose anywhere the value some here think he did, and the only reason his value has moved up any is that he’s healthy. The only reason you can even potentially get more from Boston now than at the deadline is that they may feel like their need is more acute and decide that it’s their best option. But even that is a little questionable. It’s not like they couldn’t anticipate then that they’d be where they are now. They just had the playoffs as a factor, really.

A bunch of midgets with no arms could pitch better than us. -iorange555
by boomer1 on Nov 23, 2008 2:53 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Yep
The only reason you can even potentially get more from Boston now than at the deadline is that they may feel like their need is more acute and decide that it’s their best option.
I watch the news for signs their need is getting more acute (eg, their offseason positional targets are signing elsewhere, other catchers aren’t becoming available), and actually there are few catcher trade options that have been aired out publicly.
Signs point to Texas. Let Boston sort out who they’ll sign FA-wise, including Tek, while Salty continues to rake in the Dominican, and the screws will naturally tighten.
Go Strangers.
by hightowersmith on Nov 23, 2008 4:01 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
My only contention with that
is that I have to think that there are some more catching possibilities that aren’t being aired out publicly. We’ve talked about some of them, but:
Baltimore – Hernandez with Wieters ready
Cleveland – Martinez or Shoppach, with Santana coming to join or replace the other one
Houston – Towles, with Houston not wanting to give the lead job and with their need for pitching and Castro comming
Pittsburgh – Paulino with Doumit stepping up
St Louis – Bryan Anderson
Colorado – Iannetta or Torrealba
Arizona – Montero or Shelton
could trade useful major league or major league ready catching right now if they wanted to. Some of those make more sense than others, and some of those teams with two catchers would probably like to keep two catchers, but Boston could very easily be willing to overpay on a smaller scale for someone less attractive than overpay on a dramatic scale. As I’ve mentioned a few times, the catcher position is following CF as a beefed up position depth-wise in baseball. They could very easily decide that a Montero or Torrealba does as much for them at the moment as a Saltalamacchia, and if they wait a little longer for their long term solution, it should come much cheaper than a Buchholz.
I guess I just don’t see them as cornered as you do.
by Brett Perryman on Nov 23, 2008 5:42 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
With the lack of catcher trades
I’m starting to wonder if the Rangers best option to maximize the value in the situation is to carefully weed out which [if any] is the best talent and address the two leftover C’s after all experimentation is over. Kinda like the monkeys that Proctor & Gamble retire.
by shroomer on Nov 23, 2008 6:09 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
That’s what I’ve been suggesting they at least consider. Especially so because I really don’t think that they know who is going to be the best guy.
by Brett Perryman on Nov 23, 2008 6:12 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
If that happened
there would be 500 post arguments here about how quickly they should fire the entire front office. I’d rather see them do that than make a trade just for the sake of making one, but here the sentiment would be extremely negative if one isn’t traded before April.

Wrong way to look at it.
What you lose in perceived trade value you gain in certainty that you kept the right guy(s). And since there seem to be more decent catcher options than usual this year, what you gain or lose in trade value is minimal anyway.

No
What they did last year was give Laird 344 at bats and all three of the other guys 291. You don’t see a difference between 291 ABs split up among those three and potentially all 635 split up between Teagarden and Salty? Or all of them through, say, June or July even?
Totally different situation.
by Brett Perryman on Nov 24, 2008 4:35 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Well
291 among 3 catchers is less than 100.
April to June/July ABs for, potentially, 3 catchers (and here we’ll assume Max is in AAA…I don’t think Wash takes him seriously enough frankly) gives you about the same amount at best, just guesstimating.
Go Strangers.
by hightowersmith on Nov 24, 2008 4:52 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs

291 isn’t enough. That’s what I’m saying. Laird used up too many at bats.
by Brett Perryman on Nov 24, 2008 4:54 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Between Saltalamacchia and Tea there are enough ABs, OK, if their developments aren’t impeded by frequent off-days.
I was including Laird in the analysis…three catchers on the 25-man roster.
Go Strangers.
by hightowersmith on Nov 24, 2008 6:42 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
One more thought on last year
and this isn’t central to my thinking, because, as I said, I’d take Laird out of the equation, and that takes you from 291 at-bats to 635 for two guys to share. But they really were pretty unlucky with all three young players getting hurt and Teagarden getting the Olympic opportunity. There were times where Saltalamacchia would have gotten additional regular at bats, but he was injured. Not to say they handled it right, because I don’t think they did.
I would compare it with Cruz. They screwed up imo and were unlucky at the same time. They should have committed to his opportunity early, but once they were ready to, he was hurt. Both factors worked against them getting a good enough look at him.
by Brett Perryman on Nov 24, 2008 5:38 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Also
I’m not rooting for them to hang on to all three young guys come hell or high water, just that if the deal isn’t out there to clearly take advantage of your strength you can easily proceed, and that I really don’t think that anyone knows exactly how these guys are going to develop. And like with Danks and McCarthy, for example, you often see divergent results from guys who seemed pretty close, and you often see them pretty quickly.
The Rangers have the opportunity to have both Danks and McCarthy and test them out and trade the other. While that may possibly lead to not being able to get much for the McCarthy, it also allows you to not make the mistake of trading the Danks of the two.
by Brett Perryman on Nov 24, 2008 4:43 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs

Not at all what I said
I said:
just that if the deal isn’t out there to clearly take advantage of your strength you can easily proceed
In case I didn’t say that in a clear manner, I’m saying that if you don’t get the opportunity to do that kind of deal, you don’t settle just because you feel like you’re backed into a corner.
Maybe the fact that I expressed the two thoughts in separate posts didn’t help, but they’re just two parts of the same idea.
by Brett Perryman on Nov 24, 2008 4:57 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs

however I think the BoSox are looking for the heir apparent to Tek and I believe they see Salty or TT as the best fit for that. How would you rank those catchers you have listed compared to our catchers?

by slc ranger on Nov 23, 2008 6:15 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I think
they’d prefer Chris Iannetta or Chris Shelton or Russell Martin. I think that Shoppach is probably pretty close to our guys.
I wouldn’t disagree that it’s very possible that one of our two guys make the most sense for them. But they can’t make Texas accept a deal they find attractive. And if there is someone else who would, especially given that the Giants do have nice pitching that they’re willing to trade, and most other organizations actually have greater needs for young pitching than Texas, I’m just pointing out that they may be willing to settle for one of those deals.
I mean look at it like this. Russell Martin would probably be their ideal guy. By the logic that they should overpay to get Salty, shouldn’t they overpay to get Martin? They have enough to trade to get him if they were willing to. And if not, you’re coming to the conclusion that I was, just flipped around. I said that it might be more attractive to overpay on a smallar scale, to adequately fill a position without doing something that makes you sick.

No, you can’t. He just hasn’t struggled at any level but MLB for a couple of years now. He spent a couple of months in 2007 in AA and was Nelson Cruz-like, then had the good stretch in AAA last year, albeit short, as you said. It’s just not surprising to me that he’d put up big numbers in the DWL considering the level of competition and that that he may well think he’s playing for a chance to move to a new organization and be the guy – and maybe in Boston. Those four games have been really bad ass though.

I just saw that Kinsler..
Cant be in the WBC because they wont insure players who were on the DL at the end of the 08 season. At least thats what was said…
Annoying if true, when utley had his surgery I thought for sure kins would make the team and make it a lot more interesting for me.

I went to 2 WBC games in 2006
USA vs. Mexico at the Dbacks stadium and USA vs. South Africa at the Giants’ spring training stadium.
While the games were pointless, it was a great atmosphere…especially the Mexico game. I thought it was great and I’d definitely go check out some more games if I still lived in PHX.

I was cleaning up my PC today, and came across that vid from 07. It had Kam being gross, Aki closing the meal, and Milly pigging out.
Maybe it is local to my machine…I’ll try to post it up somewhere, if I can find it.

Those facial expressions might be the best thing I’ve seen all day.
I especially like the greasy haired guy in the black shirt who’s kind of pushing the red shirted guy forward as human shield. That’s why you should never hang out with guys who grease their hair to high hell and then slick it back. Those guys will turn on you every chance they get. Every time. Guaranteed.

Maybe if he’d worked out more and taken better care of himself he would have avoided this injury.

If that's not a reassuring vote of confidence I don't know what is.
[…] All five candidates Jon Daniels interviewed … are now managing in the major leagues. […] Don Wakamatsu’s hiring by the Seattle Mariners […] Ron Washington is here, of course, John Russell is with the Pirates, Trey Hillman with the Royals and Manny Acta with the Nationals.
The five are a combined 341-468 (.422) [187-298 (.386) with the somewhat respectable Rangers and Royals thrown out] and a collective -785 run differential last year. I know that they are all teams with major warts (Rangers: pitching, Tom Hick’s; M’s: underacheivement, Nintendo; KC: heavy reliance on farm system to be subsequently traded away, Alex Gordon; Pirates: penny pinching despite purrty new stadium, getting jobbed by the Nady and Bay trades; Nats: general ineptitude, possible voodoo curse, ugly ass backstop) that cannot necessarily be rectified over an off season but still…
And I know Wak just got hired on but… Just doesn’t exactly pump sunshine into the notion the Rangers hired the best manager out of the five. It seems like the lesser of the five evils so far.

Do you perceive those guys who have been managing to have thrown away a lot of potential wins with their managing? I can’t say that I do. Not that they’re the awesomest collection of managerial talent ever.
by Brett Perryman on Nov 24, 2008 4:39 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Looking back at it, I didn't really make myself all that clear...
It’s not that I think that they’ve managed some games away, it was more along the lines of your last response (with which I agree) that they are not the most awesomest collection of talent out there. It seems that out of those five at least least one would have had a club within 10 games of .500 in their first year or two. (And for the record, I barely count the Rangers as being at that mark since the only reason they were as close to .500 as they were was because they obliterated other teams pitchers on a simple majority of the games. And when the offense wasn’t there, the pitching seemed to let the air out of the game most of the time. Both of these cannot be put squarely at the feet of the manager.)
I also realize that there is a lot of talent issues on every one of of those clubs: in the Rangers case, it’s hard to win games when the ball is always in play; in the Pirates case, it’s hard to win when you trade your two best players coupled with pitching problems and so on… I also think that it is a self fulfilling prophecy when four of those five teams are in the bottom third of the league in payroll. That’s not to say that you couldn’t win with low payroll (AZ, FLA, OAK, MINN all come to mind) but it is easier to cover up deficiencies in player development by throwing money at the right players rather than fixing what’s wrong with coaching. If there is going to be a small payroll, there has to be money invested in the right players and the right coaches.
I just find it discouraging to believe that those five were the best available options to the market (not just the Rangers) at the time.

I agree
They weren’t overly inspiring candidates. As you said, the fact that they all now have jobs says that Daniels was in synch with “MLB at large” on who the standard candidates for managerial jobs were at the time, but it says nothing about how attractive that talent was. I don’t think that we know a ton about any of these guys at this point, because their rosters were and continue to be some of the tougher ones to develop into a winner around the league, but not one of them has done anything remarkable as of yet.
