NFL Game Day 11/23

What do you think, Rhynes, can we get Terrence Newman on the air?

Well, he is on the playing field today, at least.

More special teams suckage?

LB Justin Rogers (back), an SMU product who is one of the Cowboys' better special teamers, won't play.

So

Did everyone go to Luby’s after church today?

Dude, Luby's rules.

Their rolls are out of this world.

You know, it is funny...

…how much this team is reminiscent of the Switzer-era Cowboys of 97 or 98…

The team would be flat and play below its performance level, and everyone wanted to blame the problems on bad playcalling by Zampese (and now Garrett) rather than the players playing like ass.

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 23, 2008 12:44 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

i mean

the players are probably playing alright. but i’m not sure what you can do when you have a pass happy offense and a qb with an injury that hampers his throwing.

Its the Head Coach

Phillips won’t get on any of his players if they’re not playing well. He cuddles them more than anything…

In Smoak We Trust

by Smoak Some on Nov 23, 2008 12:46 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Much like Switzer

And Jerry encourages that, because he makes it clear that he’s the one in charge, not the head coach, and Jerry perpetuates the coddling.

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 23, 2008 12:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yep

Jerry’s in control. He runs everything. Thats why we won’t see another coach like Jimmy on this team, because he would try and take control away from jerry. Thats why we won’t see a bill cowher on this team, which everyone thinks could happen

In Smoak We Trust

by Smoak Some on Nov 23, 2008 12:50 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Well

We said that once before, and Jerry broke down and brought Parcells in.

Parcells got things back on track, and then Jerry decided things could go back to the way they were, where this is Jerry’s personal plaything.

Jerry sucks.

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 23, 2008 12:52 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Hell, if i went 5-11 every year

But the good thing for jerry was that the year parcells left, dallas went 13-3, which jerry gets credit for.

And parcells didn’t have complete control….you think TO was his idea?

In Smoak We Trust

by Smoak Some on Nov 23, 2008 12:55 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Of course not

Parcells didn’t want Owens here.

I’ve heard it suggested that Jerry started asserting himself a lot more than last year or so, which is what led to Parcells leaving.

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 23, 2008 12:56 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Come on. Parcells didn’t want Owens here. Everyone knows that.

And when you start referring to every college football head coach as “Quitter”, you can call Parcells “Quitter.”

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 23, 2008 12:58 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

Jerry started getting tired that Parcells was getting all the glory for changing this team around, so Jerry slowly started taking back power.

Right now, it just shows me that I don’t think he will ever hire a controling coach again

I don’t know about tremendously. The offense has made exactly one play, and that was the typical Romo and Owens make a lot out of nothing ad lib.

But the defense has stepped up twice after goofy long passes, and this Polk has made two awesome special teams plays. The offense still needs to get it going though.

by ab03 on Nov 23, 2008 1:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Just seems like such an easy explanation

When an offense is playing poorly, it rarely matters what sequence of plays you call. He obviously passes a whole lot on first down and runs a lot on second down, but it’s not like there is no reason behind it.

by Brett Perryman on Nov 23, 2008 1:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The thing is

That it hasn’t worked. I mean, the standard play sequence is incomplete on first down, run for short distance on second down, leading to a third and long. A lot of the time he isn’t putting his players in a position to win.

by jf55510 on Nov 23, 2008 1:17 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Again though

running on first down hasn’t worked when they’ve done that either. When you aren’t playing well, play calling is going to suck.

What I’d question is whether there is something more that he could do to help the offense just execute better. Develop players, somenow get the Ol to stop committing pre-snap penalties, stuff like that.

Where’s Martellus today?

How about

A screen, a dump pass, a run, something that gets you between 4 and 6 yards which gives you options, other than a a pass on 3rd and 10 on 3rd down.

by jf55510 on Nov 23, 2008 1:23 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, a run was going to do that

i don’t see the point about complaining about a play that had the WR running free 15 yards beyond the line of scrimmage.

and a run on 2nd and 10 wasn’t going to get you 4 -6 yards. don’t know where you got that pipedream

A run

A run isn’t the only option, it was just an example. Are you telling me that there aren’t plays in the play book that are designed to get you 4 to 6 yards? Otherwise, why not just run 15-20 yard pass plays every down? The play calling has been atrocious this season and it is clear that JG is not the future for this franchise.

by ab03 on Nov 23, 2008 1:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No

No, they should have some variety of play calling. It is all predictable. When, as if par for the course, the offense gets zero yards on first down, they are going to run if they passed on first down, and they are going to pass if they ran on first down. When they do run on second down, you can guess the play with about 80% accuracy. This is a predictable offense, its only saving grace is that they are talented and are getting points in spite of the play calling.

How am I am hypocrite?

by jf55510 on Nov 23, 2008 1:55 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

no you can't predict a damn thing

you say each play is predictable without actually predicting any of them

they ran pass pass pass and then pass run pass. then i think it was run pass pass.

i believe one run was off tackle right and then up the middle. how does that comport with your theory?

by ab03 on Nov 23, 2008 1:58 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Huh

My theory is that the play calling is bad. Once, the first down play is run, you can guess the second down play with an extremely high degree of accuracy. Thusly, they don’t gain yards on second down leading to a third and long.

How am I a hypocrite?

by jf55510 on Nov 23, 2008 2:00 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

by ab03 on Nov 23, 2008 2:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That

I am not saying that is the wrong call. The second and long pass is fine. What has been bad is the pass. Instead of trying to get yards on second to make third down manageable, they are trying to get 30 yards on second down.

by jf55510 on Nov 23, 2008 2:06 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I

I am complaing about the play call. I don’t have a problem with a pass on second and long, I have a problem with what pass is called.

by ab03 on Nov 23, 2008 2:05 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Well

Romo hasn’t been that accurate on those routes. So, you are asking him to make a throw he hasn’t shown he is able to make. He has been accurate on the long balls and dump offs. On intermediate balls and most short passes, he hasn’t been accurate.

by jf55510 on Nov 23, 2008 2:07 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

so you want him to throw more dump offs?

there are no dump off routes. there is no route where all of the receivers stay about 7 yards away from the LOS.

you call the play. qb decides whether to throw it to an open receiver or throw it on a dump off. this is far from a playcalling issue

There are plenty of passes that are similar to a dump off. You have a screen, a quick out to a reciever, among others. There are plenty of underneath routes they could run but don’t.

Don't get me wrong, he was a good corner

Its just that was the summer in which the 49ers just spent money. He, on that day, became the highest paid defensive player in the league. It was like us giving all that money to ARod just to get him to sign with us.

I do agree with zywica, i really think its a system problem that clements is not good anymore. Its just he really hasn’t impressed me that much as a player anymore

What i mean

That when he was with the bills, he was good. Thats what i mean by was.

Now, with the 49ers, he “isn’t that good of a CB” anymore. I got a friend who’s a 49ers fan says that hes just too passive and not aggressive anymore. I don’t know if its the system or clement in general, but hes not as good as he was with the bills.

In Smoak We Trust

Here's the problem Longhorn

As everyone talked about this week, SF does not press their corners. They play off and don’t jam receivers at the line. Whether Clements is a good corner or not, their technique isn’t to do what’s given Owens problems. A lot of people were predicting a big week for Owens as a result, and that happened.

We’ll have plenty of chances to find out for sure, though, with the teams they have coming up. And hopefully Romo will get healthy enough to give him a full chance.

Nice

We are 2/3 through the must win leg.

I kinda half expected this game to 45-7 Dallas or so. Our offense is always there with Garrett and with Wade taking over the defense, we can be really strong.

It’s too bad the Giants didn’t lose to Baltimore. I thought Baltimore would beat them because that team is just salty, and evidently it was a closer game than the score. Because I expect they’ll lose to AZ, and we have our head up match left to possible gain another game on them, which would leave us just 1 back hypothetically.

I’m kinda pissed TO got the ball so much after his whining, but whatever,

Not really

When Martz is going against Wades defense, we’re likely to stop them, sometimes.

When Garett is going against their defense, they dont really stop us.

Thus, we win the game.

Pretty simple.

If it’s all about talent, then I dare you to make Maurice Carthon the playcaller for the Houston Texans or New England Patriots.

They will be 5-11 the first season, period. With Tom Brady. Period. Theres no debating this.

But dont take my word for it, the proof is in what teams do. They dont care about the draft, and they do care about hotshot young OC’s. Look at the Texans who had to go out and hire A) Kubiak and B) Shanahan..

And all they looked at is young OC’s, so once again I say talk is cheap, what teams do is revealing.

The end of this first half is pretty interesting.

Awwww.

That’s really too bad. Rackers tried to boot the shit out of that and hit it funny. Moose made an excellent analogy, the idea of having the big-head driver and taking a giant swing will usually lead to a shank.

"Please. What the hell do you know about starting a sports-related website and then deciding to leave it to work on other things and then? How dare you, sir." -- Michael Schur, aka FireJoeMorgan's Ken Tremendous, to Will Leitch

Damn

Giants opening it up on AZ.

Eli is really, really good at taking opportunities. Then that defense is so good, it’s really tough to beat them.

Hopefully at least Washington loses today out of our direct WC competitors.

Damn.

How many more years does Favre have in him? You watched any highlights from today’s Jets game? He still has a cannon…
