Way OT - Abilene Christian University Football

Amid all the wackiness of the BCS, I just wanted to remind everyone that there is a playoff system at all other levels of NCAA football. And a team from not too far away stand a pretty good chance at winning a title very soon.

Yesterday, Abilene Christian University took on West Texas A&M in Abilene in the 2nd round of the Division 2 playoffs. ACU entered the game 10-0. West Texas was 11-1 with their only loss coming to ACU. The game was amazing. The final score was:

ACU 93 WT 68

It's not a basketball score. It's the score of the football game.

Here is a story on the game:

ACU vs. WT

I was actually at the game yesterday in Abilene and it was phenomenal. Four hours of video game football. ACU scored on 13 of 15 possessions. The first possession they didn't score on, they missed a field goal. The second possession they didn't score on they punted but the punt was fumbled and ACU recovered. So, they were never stopped! The running back for ACU scored 7 touchdowns. And this is not to mention the amazing stats from WT. Their quarterback almost threw for 600 yards. Amazing game. Maybe the most amazing part about it is ACU didn't really break a sweat in getting to 93. And they let up on the gas midway through the 4th quarter. They could have gotten to 100 if they had wanted.

biased view

Okay…perhaps I’m biased here. I’m an alum of the University, a current graduate student, a full time staff member and part time faculty. I’m good friends with a few of the coaches and have had a great opportunity to spend some time talking with the head coach (who is much more than a coach…he is an amazing role model to those young men).

Our offense team is GOOD. This game obviously shows how great of an offense we have…but it also makes our defense look horrible…when in reality…we’ve only given up 19 points per game. We played the 2nd best offense in D2 football…and our offense couldn’t stay on the field long enough to give our defense a rest. only because we scored so quickly…I think we had 3 straight 1 play scoring drives…each of them around 50 yard plays….one of them in which our running back HURDLED the line. Our defense isn’t great….but they can make enough plays to give our offense more than a fighting chance to put up some big numbers.

This next game is going to be a real test…Northwest Missouri State is pretty good…we beat them to open the year…but it should be a great contest.

What is interesting enough…just like the Rangers…it takes WINNING to put fans in the seat…and when you have a team that is exciting and is one of the best in the nation…the stands are packed…and the atmosphere is GREAT! What a blast…I hope to have that kind of experience again at The Ballpark in Arlington…it happened before…I was at that first home playoff game in ’96.

Yeah, I'm an alum too

I’m from Abilene and graduated with my undergrad in ’02 and my grad degree in ’05.

This week will be another test but our offense can’t be stopped. The story of the season was always going to be about whether or not the defense can come up with key stops. They did Saturday. If they can again this Saturday we should move on.

good to see they’re doing well. They were a joke back in the day when I was there.

Alum here too

Except that I went to WT. Until I left in 03, the Buffs were horrid (lost homecoming 66-3 to Tarleton). After that Carthel came to town and made WT football into what it is now. Well, Ryan Leaf gave it some publicity too (both good and bad). The RB from ACU must be All-World.

was ryan leaf that bad

IIRC the prob was he asked a player for a pain pill

dont knwo if he GOT it or TOOK it but if he got fired for ASKING thats a little much…

anyone w/ any insight?

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

Bernard Scott is all-world

I will be very interested in how he transitions to the NFL, because he will get a shot. He does not have the size for an every down back in the NFL but he could be a Leon Washington, Reggie Bush-type of guy that you use as kind of a hybrid player. He has great speed and great vision.

I've read...

that he is potentially a 4th round prospect.

Pretty Amazing....

My younger brother and I are grads (‘91 and ’87). He drove down to the game and kept me updated by text message. I was a little disappointed in the multiple laterals on the last kick-off. I’m not sure the reason for that action.

The story in “ACU Today” of Coach Thomsen taking the team to Promise Keepers is the kind of news old grads like to hear. It is not just a football team, but a group of coaches and men trying to uphold the mission of the University.

Hope they can keep it going this week.

By the way, anybody “Drink Milk” as an undergrad?

Drank Cider here-Kinsmen

Coach T is the real deal when it comes to developing football players holistically. He brings in the players he knows can win and compete…but he doesn’t just leave it at bringing in football players.

The lateral was NOT coach T’s call. He called for a knee and was not too happy with that…but they’re 19-21 year old kids who got caught up in the moment. It happens….

Letting up on the gas

If they did that then what was the reasoning behind the last kickoff?

Don't know

Most of the crowd around me was screaming for them to score 100. I am sure that is what the players were thinking “Wouldn’t it be cool to score 100.” I was embarrassed, though. I mean, we are not Nebraska or OU or an Urban Meyer-coached team. We are ACU and we won the game, let’s just sit on it and show some class. It didn’t happen, and part of that might also be due to the fact that we were playing our biggest rivals in WT.

Last year

ACU lost in the second round because they let off the gas. They were winning by 3 touchdowns in the second half, and ending up losing in overtime (by an outrageous score as well). I guess they weren’t taking any chances this time.

WT scored at the end of the game, prompting the kickoff

If WT wanted to just end then game then they should have run the clock out instead of trying to score on their last possession. I didnt see anything wrong with them trying to run back the kickoff. That whole game was played like a game of Madden 09, it would have been fitting to have them run back the kickoff to score 100.

Running back the kick

If they had just run back a normal kickoff return that is one thing but the way they did it with all the laterals was pretty stupid.

Agreed

There was a bit of showboating going on…but they still scored 93. If WT didnt want them to score again, then they had the opportunity to stop them. I didnt think it was a big deal.
