LSB Community Prospect Project: #7
6 down, a lot more to go.
After 245 votes, Taylor Teagarden has won the right to be called the LSB Community #6 prospect!
Over 50% of the votes for the winner yet again. Seriously, one of these is gonna be close one of these days. I swear!
The list so far:
1. LHP, Derek Holland.
2. RHP, Neftali Feliz
3. 1b, Justin Smoak
4. RHP, Michael Main
5. SS, Elvis Andrus
6. C, Taylor Teagarden
Time to move on to the next vote.
The polls are open, so go ahead and vote in the poll at the bottom and feel free to make any suggestions and/or criticisms in the comments below.
And please don't hesitate to tell me you want on the list for next time.
NOTE: There has been some speculation as to what the criteria are for this vote. Should guys who have spent time in the bigs be involved in "prospect" discussions? For the sake of this exercise we're taking what the guys have done in the big leagues and using the BA prospect formula of 130 AB's or 50 ip. If a guy is under those limits, he's still a prospect and he goes on the poll. It's that simple.

At least not yet you can't.
But one of these days we’ll meet up at some sort of Newberg/LSB event and I figure it’ll go something like this:
1. Get really drunk.
2. Fist fight in the parking lot over Kevin Millwood.
3. Hug it out twenty minutes later over Max Ramirez.
4. Head back to the hotel bar for a night cap and just see where the night takes us…

Hmm... that seems like the kind of thing best left for pillow talk, but if it happened on the walk back in from the parking lot between 3 and 4 that'd be okay by me.

i think, after ramirez in the #7 spot, that perez, borbon, boscon, and beavan should follow in some order. so which one doesn’t deserve a top ten spot?

Its gonna be very interesting once we get past #9. I think Max, Perez, and Borbon will be 7-9. Ten is where it gets real interesting. Hurley, Boscan, Beltre, Beavan, NeRa, Font, Kiker could all be in the mix.

I don't think the Sawx would be at all interested in something like that.
Buchholz is a pipe dream, imo.
He’s the kind of pitching prospect where if they’re thinking of dealing him I would have to take a real good look at his medicals cause if he’s right I just don’t see how they deal him right now.
Cause yah Catcher + Boscan for Buchholz is a “Great. Yes. Where do I sign?” type of offer.

(anyone have any aidar/anyone quotes about boscan?)
i just do not see them trading buchholtz at all…but i can hope, right?right?righ?

Has anyone else noticed how quickly our position player prospects drop off?
I never have any problems coming up with new pitchers to add to the poll, but the good hitting prospects are getting hard to come by. After this next wave of Engel, Borbon and Max, you could make a case that there’s not another position player worthy of a spot until the mid-twenties.
Vallejo, Moreland, Golson and Lemon all have their strengths, but it’s not any of them is a threat to break into the top 10. And after them you’re looking at a real serious downgrade to guys like Clark Murphy, Cristian Santana, Matt West, Johnny Whittleman, Tomas Telis, Esdras Abreu, etc… Guys with serious holes in their prospect resume.
Am I missing someone? Who are the next wave of position prospects y’all think should be added?
Actually as I’m writing this I just realized Joaquin Arias is still eligible. I thought I remembered him breaking 130 ab’s, but he’s at 121. I’ll add him next.

That's a good question.
I think he’s been in the majors too many days to be considered a rookie (meaning: I believe he spent 45 days on the Rangers’ active roster during the 25-player limit period), but I’m pretty sure the BA rules only look at IP (36.0) and so deem him still eligible.
I dunno.
What do y’all think?
Should I look at service time or just IP/AB’s?

For our purposes it doesn’t seem right to discount a player because he was on the roster but wasn’t used for whatever reason.

Yah, okay.
I’m fine with that. Though it’s more of a relief pitcher thing than an unused thing in Mad Dog’s case. It always feels odd voting for a reliever who was up for 3 or 4 months but didn’t get to 50 IP, but since we’re gonna be comping our list with BA and that’s how they do it so I’m okay with it as long as others are as well.

I don't have clark as high as some apparently
he has some major flaws in his swing.
I am high on Tracy (where I wasnt before) and Bianucci (also has some major flaws in swing) Santos Pina and Osuna. I think I am in the minority when it comes to still liking Ben Harrison (who is tearing up AFL and could get drafted in the rule 5) and Tim Smith. Arias would be top 30 if he was healthy but I am not counting on that.

Nah. His swing is still a work in progress, but it’s not as flawed as you are suggesting. He definitely needs to work on staying closed, but his swing itself is pretty decent. He has good bat plane and strong/quick wrists that produce plus power potential.

JParks is right
Re-reading BA’s draft profile, Clark’s issues arent as serious as I remembered:
“tends to open up too early in his swing, spinning off the ball” ; “has a habit of blocking his hands and getting them almost locked beyond the front edge of the plate”.
Baseball intellect piece:
"He looks to take an aggressive hack at the ball and it appears, should he make contact, it would be after he let it travel deep into his hitting zone. All this lends itself to solid power.
The tendency for him to swing and miss could be from a number of issues. It often appeared he was too far out in front, meaning he was possibly fooled on some sort of breaking pitch. "
He hit for a nice ave in AZL but his HR #s were low continuing a trend from his (presumably injury-related) disappointing SR yr.
The flaws do seem easily corectible and his his high batting ave and low hr totals in AZL may indeed indicate that he was concentrating on correcting his deficiencies.

A Mike Piazza comp for Max or a Ken Griffey Jr comp for Beltre or a Carl Yastrzemski comp for Borbon. Anyone can throw out any name they like for “comps” then it will float around for a while and probably shouldn’t have been noted by anyone but it is much easier for a reader to visualize even if it is a less accurate picture. How someone who hasn’t touched full season ball is getting votes over a guy who has OPSed in the quads in AA is beyond me.

I just read BA’s profile on him and he has 3 plus swing-and -miss pitches (fb 93-96, slider, splitter), which, in my book, would rank him as the #1 closer prospect in the system. Even though he is injured, and thus unlikely to be taken in the Rule 5, I can’t understand why Bannister was chosen over him for the 40. He was thought likely to make it to the majors last year before his injury…

Perez for me too...
I go Feliz, Holland, Main, Perez at the top 4. Out of those 4 we oughta find 2 or 3 real quality pitchers to solidify our rotation who badly needs it. Perez is the furthest away, but probably has the highest ceiling but I think he is still in that category of pitchers. Smoak is close to that level but give me the potential ace over the probable all star firstbasemen…

That may be the case...
but Smoak is probably the surest thing this organization has. Smoak is Teix all over again. I really see little chance of him not being an all star 1B.
There is a better chance of Feliz, Holland, Main, or Perez not turning out to be as good as we all hope they will be.

huh?
Perez is the furthest away, but probably has the highest ceiling
Its like as soon as people get to AA they no longer posses any “ceiling”. I don’t see anything Perez could do that Holland, Main, or Feliz are incapable of. Say what it is “I don’t know as much about Perez so he could be awesome” or “I don’t really have a reason but I like Perez”. I think Perez and Main have brainwashed people or something.

Kinda agree
I figure the dirkapoll next summer will either see some adjustment or confirmation on the Main/Perez front. There’s no reason, though, not to at least consider there’s some positive reality behind the multi-source hype.

3 plus pitches at 17...
I think he has the potential to be the best pitcher in baseball if the stones fall just right. The guys at AA have matured a lot more and therefore don’t have as much to improve. Perez already has an impressive arsenal and is so young I think that makes his ceiling a little bit higher than the 20 year olds. I’m not knocking the other 3…I had them ranked above him, I just don’t see as big of a drop off between him and the other 3 like this poll has indicated, partially because he is the youngest.

Oh and this from Hindman's prospect previews...
I asked Jon Daniels if he had to choose between Derek Holland and Perez, he couldn’t bring himself to make that call, though he suggested that Perez probably has the biggest upside of any pitcher in the system.
So yeah, if Holland is #1, Perez shouldn’t be 7 spots behind him, IMO.

Ok, but
I think there is less separating #1-#7 in the Rangers system than perhaps any other system in baseball right now.

Its not all about ceiling
Beltre and Perez combined have the highest ceiling in the system, but they aren’t 1/2 in the rankings.

Vallejo getting some love
3 votes? I’d like to see one of your explainations.
I had a paper route when I was a kid. I was supposed to go to 2,000 houses. Or two dumpsters.

Now, now
Jamey ranked him 18th last month at mlb.com
Obama thinks he is a good talker, but he is often undisciplined when he speaks. He needs to understand that as President, his words will be scrutinized and will have impact whether he intends it or not. I dunno, I haven't gone down that far.
Low to mid-20’s I’d guess.

"I dunno, I haven't gone down that far"???
Ouch, what happened to the Lemon love? Not enough left to go around after the Jeter/M-Ram love?

I still love the guy and think he has a good shot to be an above average 2b with good OBP skills and decent pop.
I heart him real hard and I’m rooting for him more than probably anyone else in our system, but I try to rank guys honestly and we have so many high ceiling guys in this system (particularly arms) that it’s hard for me to make a case for him before the late teens/early twenties.
But I’ve only gone as far as my top ten right now, so I really don’t know. He might sneak into the mid-late teens for me.
I think the moral of this story might be that I take my prospect rankings way too seriously.
But, hey… That kind of thing is really fun to me.
