Varitek offered 1yr
Looks like Boston is making a soft offer to Varitek. Link to article
Theo doesn't hold onto fan/locker room favorites just for the heck of it.. see Nomar, Manny, Pedro, Damon, etc. This appears to play into the notion that Boston will need to acquire a young C this year. Even if Varitek accepts, they'll still need a young C to work in for 2010. Salty playing well in the AFL couldn't have come at a better time.

Nice
Now imagine the riot on the board if boston trades bucholz for a non-rangers catcher.
the preceding post was a great success.

Maybe Russel Martin.
Other than that I can’t think of a catcher who’s even rumored to maybe possibly be on the market who I could see Boston trading Buchholz for.
And I wouldn’t riot if they traded Buchholz for R-Mar. He’s better than our catchers.

He's not rumored
The GM shot it down real quick. I truly believe it was analysts trying to start some smoke.

Yah, hence the rumored to maybe possibly be on the market bit.
I don’t think R-Mar’s going anywhere, either.
But his name has at least been put out there in the (by the?) media, as opposed to guys like Mauer, McCann and Weiters who haven’t even been hinted at.

it was put out there
and the GM quiclky ended any talk of it
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

A GM making a statment like that to the media means next to nothing to me. I mean... What else is he going to say?
But I never gave much credence to the idea they’d be trading Martin anyways. Just didn’t make sense and had that whiff of pure media speculation to it.

well exactly
the whole situation to mee SEEMED media driven/created
they dont have any catching prospects of note at the upper level (traded santana for casey blake)
no obvious replacements
why move their most consistant player/a guy that they have no in-house options to replace him to boston when they have options for SP as it is?

Well
Maybe getting another catcher for one of the lesser guys (that yeah, are more likely what the rangers could get anyway), thus eliminating the trade chances.
Just saying all this discussion about boston.. going to be some bitterness if it never goes down. From me at least.
But yeah, the catcher market isnt all that strong, which im glad for.

if that happens, do you think it is on JD
I’m not assuming an answer, I’d be pretty on the fence about it, especially if it was for one of the names already out there (none of whom I think are better prospects than salty)

No
I trust JD in this scenario. My frustration will just be with the general situation and missing out on a chance, even if its boston that ultimately declines to offer one of their top guys.
With the apparent 0 significant FA acquisitions and neeting to add starting pitching without giving up the SP prospects… the catcher deal is just so key to the offseason.. it seems like it might be the only major thing to happen, and the MLB team needs a ready to go top prospect badly.
But obviously the reason boston fits so well is because of the top guys, not 4-6 on their SP prospect chart.. if they wont give up the top guys then there are plenty of teams to talk to for the second tier quality.
Of course, if somehow boston gives up a top guy for a lesser catcher Ill be mad, but thats highly unlikely.
So basically… Im desperate.

Teahen to Cubs
for Fontenot and Marshall. Discussions per MLB.com
What’s Murphy’s value in comparison to Teahen?
I wouldn’t mind adding Marshall and Fontenot … or just Marshall.

That certainly would have been a nice pickup
When I saw that rumor yesterday I was wondering if Cruz would be close.
Good deal for the royals, I used to like teahen but his upside just isnt that high and they need the starter.

oh, duscissuoins
I thought it was done.
well, if marshall is available i hope the rangers are involved.

Wow
Both Fontenot and Marshall for Mark freaking Teahen?
Seems like the Cubs are getting donkey f*cked if they do that deal. Not that Sean Marshall and Mike Fontenot are going to be stars or anything, but Marshall seems like a useful bullpen peice, and is still only 25, while Fontenot had a freaking .395 OBP in 243 AB’s this year. By comparison, Mark Teahen has sucked at just about every facet of hitting baseballs outside of his mirage year of 2006.
Poor Cub fans.

that won't happen
it reminds me a lot of the byrd talk from last year. byrd, by the way, is significantly better than Teahen and can play CF. The problem is he only has one year left before FA. I have wanted Marshall for the Rangers for years.

Evidently Byrd won't work
They’re looking for LH bats, per the story.

This is like a slap in the face to the Captain
I mean, i honestly believe that he deserves a one year deal (since he was horrible last year), but at least i thought that they would give him like a 2 year deal to become a backup to another catcher they just picked up yet still be able to play like 3 days a week

I can't wait
to hear Boras’ indignant reaction. He would have called a two year offer a slap in the face. this will be a golden shower.
by clark on Nov 24, 2008 12:17 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Problem with varitek is
That hes not going to get the offer he is looking for anywhere around the league. His stats for the 2008 season were 131 games, 13 HR, .220 BA, .313 OBP, .359 SLG. This line, along with the youth movement in the catching department, is not going to get Tek the type of deal him and boras want. He would be smart enough to sign that one year deal back with the red soxs

And for that very reason
he’ll get 3-years/$25-30m from someone. Remember, his winning % last year was over 60% … whatever that means.
