But he's still going to sign with Boston, and that's probably just as well. Hopefully, it results in Buchholz for Salty.

Buchholz angle
Didn’t even think of that!
Things are breaking well so far…their offer for Tek seems low and pro-forma, Teixeira’s list of suitors remains long, and they’re in on FA pitchers. And now we hear they’re front-runners for Tazawa.

Explain to me again why
Teixeira has anything to do with them needing a catcher and being willing to trade a pitching prospect for one? I know this isn’t your conclusion but what has been suggested in papers repeatedly. I just don’t see the connection.
Even if it isn’t Buchholz, the likelihood that Boston feels more able to afford giving Texas some pitcher(s) it wants would seem to really be buoyed by all of this. Just need to keep knocking on wood I guess.

It's shakey...
The theory seemed to be they face less pressure to boost the offense at catcher if they sign Teixeira…like, maybe they could just throw a Laird or Castro in there.
They’ll probably go a couple different routes for more offense, though.

Shaky indeed
To assume that they’re going after Salty for an immediate boost to their lineup – especially when compared with adding some sort of big FA bat – is pretty misguided to me.

Haven't you seen
his winter ball stats? How many HRs has Teixeira hit this week?

Im sure hed love to play in boston with daisuke.

the preceding post was a great success.

from NPB Tracker (best english Japanese Baseball site)
Just when it looked like the bidding war for Junichi Tazawa was going to end before it started, the Rangers stepped in and made things interesting. Texas director of Asia-Pacific scouting Jim Colborn met with Tazawa for nearly two hours, and reportedly made the best offer yet received. No details have been disclosed so far.
We now have reports on official offers from:
Atlanta
Boston
Seattle
Texas
Most published reports mention that Boston is still the favorite to land Tazawa, but reports that he’s already made up his mind may have been a little premature. Tazawa has been quoted as saying he wants to make a decision quickly. Judging by the press he doesn’t seem interested in Atlanta or Seattle.
MORE INFO regarding the boston offer (earlier)
Sponichi has published a detailed account of the contract Boston offered to Junichi Tazawa. The article also quotes "They want me to come over, and I understand how I can develop. I feel like it’s a good team". Nikkan Sports is reporting that Tazawa has already decided on the Red Sox, and says that he’ll be able to officially sign at the beginning of December.
Some highlights:
3 year, $3M contract (that’s $1M/year)
Major League contract
start off at class AA
remain a starter
personal translator
The dollar figure is a little surprising — there were numerous reports of a $6M offer earlier in the day. Maybe there is a bonus or incentive package that was left off of this report. We’ll learn more over the next couple days
.
also can someone google translate this:

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

But the dollar amounts
being talked about are not scary by any means. Reasonable risk, a better one than Fukumori.

Okay.
There have been some pretty good ones, though. Nomo, Saito, Okikima, Otsuka, Sasaki, Kuroda, Matsuzaka, etc. have all been effective to varying degrees at one time or another.
And he’s a different case than most of them because of his age. Most of them have been older pitchers used up by the pro leagues for years and years before they get the chance to be posted.
I really don’t know what to think.
But I hate to make generalizations based on what other dudes from his country have done.

If it is 3 years / 3 million
then he basically costs what a low first round college pick would cost. The only aggravating part is the 40 man roster spot.

my question is
does this lead to (more) japanese guys signing directly out of HS now?
the angels tried HARD to sign dice-k (IIRC) out of HS — and multiple teams have been attempting to for a while but w/ no luck

heh hes a HUGE celebrity
and posted for their version of playgirl evidently?
but a lot of his reasoning for not coming seems to stem from the fact that he is half iranian (father) and he has some major issues with US/Iran foreign policy
came out recently and said he wanted to win 200 games in the NPB…i think hes married to a high profile actress as well
