OT - San Antonio

Since the rest of the week is likely to be pretty slow, I thought this may be a good time to solicit some San Antonio advice.

My family is meeting in San Antonio for a post-Christmas, pre-New Year's vacation.  We will make a stop by the Alamo and the riverwalk, but I am hoping someone can share some tips from a local's perspective on the best restaurants (especially Mexican/Tex-Mex) and attractions in S.A.  I am also open to any day-trip ideas.

Thanks in advance!

Have to stop by Lulu's

For chicken fried steak and a cinnamon roll…..a FOUR-pound cinnamon roll. :)

Heck yes to Lulu's!

The food is great and even if you can’t finish the cinnamon roll, you can use it as a weapon in the event you’re attacked later that night. The same goes for a Chris Madrid’s hamburger.

If you’re into Texas history, the missions in San Antonio are pretty excellent.

What's the German place

near the Riverwalk? That place had pretty good food last time I was in SA a couple years ago.

I was born in San Antonio

I have nothing to offer other than that. I’m very displaced now.

The riverwalk is awesome.

If you fish...

Canyon Lake is a nice place to fish for smallmouth and largemouth bass.

Also, there’s a year round trout fishery in the Canyon Lake tailrace.

Witte Museum on Broadway

If you have kids, or if you just like museums in general, the Witte is pretty good. They even have a mummy. It’s one of those places I just have to go to whenever I’m in town. For sentimental/nostalgic reasons mostly. Plus it’s close to some other good stuff like Breckenridge (sp?) Park and the San Antonio Zoo. And just down the street is Cheesy Jane’s (a good burger and milkshake place) and some good used book stores.

If there kids involved

4-12 years old the Witte Museum is fantastic. Lots of interactive science stuff and a great treehouse out back. The website doesn’t do it justice — makes it look like an art museum, but it’s not at all (click on the exhibits link and you’ll see some of the stuff).

The Witte is right next to Breckenridge Park, is pretty cool for a family thing. Good picnicing for a large group, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Food downtown (Market Square)

First, visit the old shops and “urban oases” refreshment stops in La Villita, alongside the River Walk. Then for curio, crafted goods, and really good sit down TexMex or country Mexican style cooking, head to Market Square for:

Chris Madrid's

best cheeseburger Ive ever had. I go there everytime I visit San Antonio. Highly acclaimed!

My favorite texmex place is a little hole in the wall called El Tipico; best cheese enchiladas ever.

St. Mary's Street used to be great for live music

10-12 years ago, anyway.

Utah, huh?

Is the skiing that good, or did it just take that long to escape from the mormons?

;)

Good to see you again dude.

ill give ya hint...

it wasnt the skiing.

mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days. it did snow which was really cool.

all the young mormom girls are hot and ready to go but consider the ice cream parlor as a hardcore weekend funstop.

the need more bars and brass poles.

that was my utah experience.

also cheap coats at 2nd hand stores, savers is awesome.

carry on….

Throw a rock in any direction from anywhere in the city

And you’ll hit half a dozen good mexican/tex-mex restaurants.

Great Restaurant in SA

and by far the best one I’ve ever been to on the Riverwalk (which most suck) is Boudro’s.

I highly recommend the blackened prime rib. Excellent seafood choices too.

You don’t have to get dressed up, but reservations are suggested.
