LSB Community Prospect Project: #9

8 down, a lot more to go.

After 260 votes, Martin Perez has won the right to be called the LSB Community #8 prospect!

Over 50% again, but this next one is shaping up to be a real battle.

The list so far:
1. LHP, Derek Holland.
2. RHP, Neftali Feliz
3. 1b, Justin Smoak
4. RHP, Michael Main
5. SS, Elvis Andrus
6. C, Taylor Teagarden
7. C, Maximiliano Ramirez
8. LHP, Martin Perez

Time to move on to the vote for #9.

The polls are open, so go ahead and vote in the poll at the bottom and feel free to make any suggestions and/or criticisms in the comments below.

And please don't hesitate to tell me you want on the list for next time.

NOTE: There has been some speculation as to what the criteria are for this vote. Should guys who have spent time in the bigs be involved in "prospect" discussions? For the sake of this exercise we're taking what the guys have done in the big leagues and using the BA prospect formula of 130 AB's or 50 ip. If a guy is under those limits, he's still a prospect and he goes on the poll. It's that simple.

Yeah, after reading the last thread

I’ve got to agree. #10 is going to give me real trouble as well though… right this moment I’m thinking about putting Boscan there over Hurley or Beltre.

I should be happy it's not easy to rank these guys

but this is going to drive me crazy.

Borbon
Boscan
Hurley
Beaven
Beltre

And dirk can you add Gomez? Some people have been put off by his injury last year but every time he took the ball he pitched well and deserves to have his name mentioned. Even if most of these people won’t vote for him out of fear of his arm fatigue last year.

Seems about the right time to add him as well.

Another Name...

Since you’re going by the Baseball America Formula (130 AB/50 IP) instead of Rookie status, how about adding Warner Madrigal? He only reached 36 IP this year for the Big League Club.

Here's to players whenever they hit into double plays. It's the only time in professional sports where I can definitively say, "yes, I could have done better."

by YourNameHere on Nov 26, 2008 12:05 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yah, meant to add him this time. He's going on next along with Kennil.

Might wait a time or two on Weiland just cause, frankly, it’s annoying typing like 25 names into the poll everytime when nobody votes for most of the last guys on anyways.

Hurley

I voted for Hurley as well. He looks to me like a solid case of flunking out of the Rangers system, winding up with the (insert random trade partner here) and having relative sustainable success. With that, I have to vote for him as a top prospect.

When those flyballs go out of the park, no

I just don’t think he’s a right fit for our ballpark. He doesn’t really have overpowering stuff and his command is a little iffy. I’d pick Boscan over him because of his groundball tendencies.

He does sometime have the Benoit syndrome

of outrageously missing locations to the worst part of the plate possible, but he has some good pitches in the arsenal and his command is good when he is not channeling Joaquin. If he can refine the changeup a bit more, I think we will be more than happy.

Yes...

the Rangers have better prospects. They are listed as #’s 1-8. I voted for Hurley not because he used to be our top pitching prospect, but because I think he will be better than many are giving him credit for.

I believe someone else mentioned how funny it is that when someone gets close to the bigs then their prospect status does down. It’s easy to make an argument for Hurley in the top 10 imo.

This is where

their lower level pitching starts to kick in. I agree with your comment, and I’m not very comfortable ranking guys like Neil Ramirez and Wilfredo Boscan at this point, but the fact that they have so many who are really intriguing is one of the key positive features of this system.

It’s a bit of a trap, as you’ll usually see homer fans of clubs with mediocre-poor systems say that their system may not look great now, but because it’s really young, a lot of that talent will move up, and the system will really improve in the eyes of others soon. It usually doesn’t happen for obvious reasons.

But even with trying to be self aware on that, I would maintain that after this first group of players, the most exciting thing that they have working is that so many of these arms are legitimate prospects. When you hear respected national commentators say things like “it’s just remarkable how much pitching they have” you know that it’s not homerism.

Anyway, I just thought that it was time to point that out, as I had the same sort of thought that you did when I looked at the candidates here. I went with Hurley, fwiw, as he’s still a promising guy if he can regain his FB and stay healthy. Borbon is a good candidate, though, and I don’t see any problem with ranking him here, personally (I know you may disagree on that).

by Brett Perryman on Nov 27, 2008 1:11 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Ditto all that

I woulda gone with Hurley had he not gotten injured. Borbon’s cuspy obviousness isn’t edgey enough for me. Too tough to choose from Beltre and the 2nd tier arm swarm. So I went hardcore BITA+ and took the guy with the 98 mph cheese. I’ll probably be able to decide better once Borbon is off the board.

voted for Hurley

Out of guys closest to the majors that are still on the list, I would be most afraid of losing Hurley. He’s a guy who, if traded, could bite us in the ass like Chris Young or John Danks—talented, fly-ball prone, and just perhaps a tweak or a confidence boost away from being a good #2/3 starter. Borbon is good, don’t get me wrong. But if we trade him and he goes off and becomes Juan Pierre with a few more home runs it just wouldn’t irk me as much.

Obviously Boscan can be pretty good in a couple years as well, but I haven’t heard anyone saying he’s in line to be any more than a mid-rotation starter. Hurley pitched fairly well for a rookie in Arlington his first few starts, while Boscan pitched in the Northwest League. And for me Boscan’s distance from the majors knocks him a tick behind Hurley’s fly-ball tendencies. Remember—Helling was a fly-ball pitcher.

dont even bring danks into the convo because he was flat out horrible 2 yrs ago and until he learned the cutter he wasnt worth anything

chris young isnt a bad comp but he is helped more from the ballpark and the defense than probably any pitcher in BASEBALL

comps weren't my point

Both Danks and Young went on to be successful pitchers elsewhere after people were worried about their profiles as pitchers in our ballpark. In the case of Danks he learned the cutter, and Young was finally trusted by his manager to go out and pitch well (in Petco). People are saying the same stuff about Hurley’s pitching profile, and it’s legit. But I’d rather trust him to figure it out, because he is a talented pitcher.

My point was only that I voted for Hurley because he’s the guy I would least like to see in another uniform between him and Borbon, the other guy I had been considering.

Lots of people saw Danks coming.

The “Oh well he learned the cutter” is a nice and simple explanation for his sudden success, but he was a top10 draft pick turned highly regarded minor league prospect who flew through the minors averaging 9+ k/9 along the way and got a full year of major league experience to learn on the job in ’07. There was plenty of reason to be high on the guy coming into this season.

I don’t know that many saw him being this good this fast, but plenty of people saw this sort of thing coming for the guy. I don’t see how he’s analogous to Galarraga at all.

I think the thing people didn't see with Danks

is him becoming a top of the rotation guy (number 1 or 2 starter). I think as he was closer to the Majors, it started looking like he would become more of a number 3 type of pitcher.

by Chase Irwin on Nov 27, 2008 3:36 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Well at the time we traded him BA had just come out with their Danks comments

and basically said if he got a little better control of his curveball he’d have a good chance of reaching his ceiling as #2 starter. If you look at his numbers he kept his k-rate high and seemed to be able to make adjustments as he moved up level-by-level. Plus he was always very young for where he was pitching, which counts for a lot.

I think a lot of this is more indicative of the fact that we tend to sour on guys if they struggle even a little in their early exposure to AAA/MLB. The fact of the matter is that, apart from a tiny number of special cases, every pitcher struggles at some point in their ascent to the bigs. Stuff that worked for them at the lower levels because they were “Just that good” no longer flies and they struggle a bit. The good ones, though, find a way to adapt. But it seems like we don’t want o hear about stuff like that. As soon as a Danks or a Hurley gets hit around a little and no longer looks like the second coming of Denton T. Young, we roll our collective eyes and move on down the trough to some bug-eyed 19 year old who’s still all shiny and unblemished.

no doubt his age played in his favor

I’m just saying that it was more likely he would be a number 3 before he was traded. Top of the rotation guys are rare and he might have ended up as a decent number 2, but I think his slight struggles in Frisco and Oklahoma made him much more likely to be a good number 3. Even the BA article didn’t say it was a guarantee he would reach his number 2 starter ceiling.

I thought his ratios were strong and that there were a lot of reasons to be high on him going into ’07.

Also

saying he would be a good number 3 isn’t really a knock on him. To throw out a Major League example, I’ve debated with some people about how James Shields is a good number 2 starter. That’s not saying he’s a bad pitcher, he just isn’t quite good enough to reach that next level. That’s how I feel Danks was at that time. He went on to learn a cutter which helped him take it to the next level and then some, but its hard to project a pitcher learning a new pitcher.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

saw danks coming

re chedk his stats from 2 years ago

to say that he was going to be very good after he was horrible then is saying a LOT

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

WTF?

He was not horrible in ’06.

That’s dumb.

In AA:
10.64 k/9
2.86 bb/9
3.73 k/bb

Then in AAA
9.17 k/9
4.33 k/bb
2.12 k/bb

He did have some gopher troubles, but his ratio’s were strong. He obviously struggled a bit adjusting to the more professional approaches used by AAA hitters and the walks came up a bit, but he was a 21 in AAA with a history of battling through early struggles at each level.

How the fuck can you classify that season as horrible?
