Wes Littleton traded to Boston

Wes Littleton has been traded to Boston for cash considerations or a PTBNL.

Jon Daniels is saying the PTBNL may not be named until sometime in the spring.  My guess is there is a list of guys the Rangers will get to choose from, and they'll spend the winter and some of the spring scouting them.

UPDATE -- Some reports say a PTBNL.  Some reports say two PTBNLs.  I shall seek clarification.

Rather disappointing

I really have always liked Wes Littleton.

Oh well, hope JD and that PTBNL is good

You know what I find funny

Boston has one of the best bullpens in baseball but they have a spot for Littleton and we have one of the worst but we can trade him and use others as a replacement.

the guy I'd like to get for Salty

is Jonathan Sanchez. I know the Giants probably wouldn’t have much use for Salty, but if we could get Bowden from the BoSox, then give SF Bowden + one of Blalock/Byrd/Murphy, I’d think that would be a deal that they would consider.

Sanchez is a guy that both the statheads and scouts seem to like a lot.

I like Sanchez, too. One of my faves.

If we are to be believe rumored values, then I think he’s a better deal than his teammate Cain who I think is overvalued right now.

Boy, if JD could use our OF/C depth to snag two guys like a Sanchez and a Sonnanstine, dump Padzilla to a team willing to take on his contract and then do something about 3b… I could really start to get super jazzed up

Because it's in the media

And Adam keeps posting trade ideas about this subject as well so we all keep talking about it. Boston needs or wants a young catcher and JD is asking for Buchholz so that is another big reason. There probably is a combination out there for a trade but is one team willing to go that far?

Return

If we’re getting two players in return (like the Boston press release says), then you have to wonder what level they’ll be. Probably someone along the lines of a David Paisano when we got him in the Danks deal.

Some decent Boston players worth considering (but might not be on the list):
  -Felix Doubront (LHSP): 12-8, 3.67 ERA, 115.1 IP, 115 HA, 24 BB, 118 K, 9 HRA (Single-A Greenville)
  -Zach Daeges (OF): .307/.412/.454 in 394 ABs, 72 BB/72 K (AA Portland)
  -Bubba Bell (OF): .285/.363/.478 in 312 ABs, 39 BB/61 K (AA Portland)
  -Jose Alvarez (LHSP): 8-9, 5.70 ERA, 107.1 IP, 118 HA, 37 BB, 86 K, 15 HRA (Single-A Greenville)
  -Travis Beazley (RHSP): 7-10, 4.68 ERA, 140.1 IP, 164 HA, 31 BB, 121 K, 9 HRA (High-A Lancaster)
-Cesar Cabral (LHSP): 2-5, 5.55 ERA, 48.2 IP, 55 HA, 16 BB, 51 K, 3 HRA (Rookie GCL Red Sox)
  -Jose Capellan (LHSP): 3-6, 4.65 ERA, 69.2 IP, 96 HA, 15 BB, 54 K, 7 HRA (Single-A Greenville)
  -Yeiper Castillo (RHSP): 3-6, 4.19 ERA, 58.0 IP, 46 HA, 29 BB, 62 K, 6 HRA (Short-Season Lowell)
-Caleb Clay (RHSP): TJ Recovery in 2008; 2.2 IP in GCL
  -Wang-Yi Lin (RHSP): 0-2, 4.63 ERA, 44.2 IP, 50 HA, 11 BB, 36 K, 4 HRA (GCL Red Sox)
  -Eammon Portice (RHSP): 4-4, 3.64 ERA, 71.2 IP, 62 HA, 26 BB, 80 K, 8 HRA (Single-A Greenville)
  -Chad Povich (RHSP): 8-7, 3.92 ERA, 126.1. IP, 115 HA, 34 BB, 110 K, 11 HRA (Single-A Greenville)
  -Manny Rivera (RHSP): 4-3, 2.24 ERA, 52.1 IP, 40 HA, 19 BB, 58 K, 1 HRA (DSL Red Sox)

There are tons more, and the Red Sox are loaded with low-level pitching to choose from. Not a bad return if you get to choose a couple guys.

I was just going to say...

that one of these things is not like the other. Doubront is still fairly well thought of, I doubt he’d be a PTBNL for Littleton. This looks like it could be a move to free up roster space for the Rule 5 draft.

Littleton was already DFAd to make room for 40 man additions for the Rule 5. Our 40 man is still full.

It just seemed like....

…..Littleton was never given a chance to succeed here. He came up in ‘06 and was amazing (yes I know, small sample size), and then was constantly being shipped back and forth between Texas and OKC. To me, it just felt like a poorly handled situation all the way around. I would’ve much rather had him around then the Jamey Wright’s and Willie Eyre’s of the world.

by Schrute Farms on Nov 28, 2008 8:32 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Littleton

He had a bad spring training in 2007. That was Washington’s first exposure to him. I think Wash decided right off the bat he couldn’t pitch, and that was pretty much that.

He didn’t get many opportunities thereafter, and he didn’t do a ton with those opportunities when they arose.

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 28, 2008 8:34 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's the way I see it also

He had a bad first impression with Worsh and it devolved from there.

Of course, The Electrician was handed the ball, regardless.

Indirectly

affects the evaluation by who he chooses to use. If the manager doesn’t trust you, why would the GM? (Assuming JD trusts Worsh, which is debatable, imo.)

Castro

Didn’t something similar happen to Fabio Castro? I thought Buck would not play him at all, so Castro was just wasting a roster spot (had to remain on the 25-man roster as a Rule V draftee). As such, JD got rid of him. I am remembering this correctly?

by Excel Hearts Choi on Nov 28, 2008 9:44 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You're remembering it correctly

That’s pretty much what happened, but the difference was that Castro was a Rule V draftee in JD’s first year as GM while working with a power hungry douchebag of a manager. While Wash may not prefer a pitcher, he would still play him if JD put him on the roster. It might not be in high leverage situations, but he would play, especially if JD told him to play him more.
