A question about Twilight
I realize that this will make me seem old and out of touch, but there's something I'm not sure about...
Who is the target audience for "Twilight"?
The Hannah Montana tween crowd?
The high school crowd?
College age people?
All of the above?
I'm confused...someone explain for me...

Well...
you know that our father read Twilight, but I’m not sure that he’s the target audience. And our niece signs “Best of Both Worlds” by Hannah Montana.

My wife has read all 4
Shes 31. Her sister, age 24, and her friends read all 4. They loved them They went to opening night and it was mainly high school and younger girls. And then there is my wife’s best friend’s flamboyant husband. He’s 42 and loves them. So to answer your question. I have no idea.

My wife...
has also read them all and she’s 32.
Although by her own admission it’s more of a tweenie type age group the book is trying to reach.

Twilight is what would happen if Harry Potter fell in love with The Notebook and then they decided to be true to themselves and never to give into their carnal lust because that would be wrong.
In other words…

and 40 year old housewives who wish they were 15 year old girls.
by venturafearsnolan on Nov 28, 2008 9:06 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
It's rather simple, really.
“Young Adults”—i.e. 10-14 year-old girls were the target audience of the books. The movie appeals to them, but has stretched its claws out to ensnare slightly older girls who dig the guy in it. Girls think he’s good-looking, and he was apparently (I haven’t seen any of them) in the Harry Potter movies, where he stole their hearts years ago.
So, essentially, the target audience is bored 10-20 year old girls, which means every 10-20 year old girl.

Teenage girls
My wife has a friend with a 16 year old daughter. Apparently, the girl was balling her eyes out one day because she realized that her real life boyfriend will never measure up to the guy in the book.

Twilight's target audience
Is I think mainly teens and any other females who like romance/fantasy. And douchebag actors who (seemingly purposely) look like they just got out of bed a half hour ago when they appear in public.

OT : I'm sure many...
aren’t watching the UCLU/ASU game, but did anyone just see that play? QB was going to throw a pass but a ASU player hit the ball loose as his arm went forward. A UCLA lineman actually picked up the ball and then looked around to see what the call was. A ASU player then came by and swated the ball out of the UCLA linemans hand and ASU ran it in for a touchdown.
Here is the problem, the UCLA lineman was looking around to see what the call was because he’s deaf and can’t hear a whistle, even if there was one. Damn that is a shitty way for your team to score. Take advantage of the deaf guy!

Oh god.
I randomly caught #2 on TV one night. Jesus Christ on a stick in the rain was that thing terrible. It was OTT in every single way possible.
But I was drinking and I reveled in the horrendousness and it actually wasn’t that bad of an experience. I mean the movie still sucked and was dumber than a 7 foot long Styrofoam dildo and I’d in no way shape or form recommend it to anyone anywhere ever, but enough stuff blew up and enough completely cheesedick one liners were uttered that I didn’t change the channel once I got into it. Definitely better than Ballistic: Ecks versus Sever or The Ringer or Million Dollar Baby or any of the true unredeemably bad crap out there that can’t even be watched in a so bad it’s funny kind of way.
No effing way would I ever watch it sober, though.
And there’s even less of an effing way that I’d see #3 in the theater. There’s a better chance of me being at the very first midnight showing of Three Fast, Three Furious rocking my “I’d like nothing more than to take Vin Diesel into my mouth” baby doll t-shirt.

It's kind of weird actually
I loved the Interview with the Vampire series, and as a general rule vampires are a-ok with me.
However, by the time I really heard about Twilight, it already had a rabid fanbase, and it also had a huge number of people who just thought it was terrible. So, I decided not to read it, lest I get sucked into the rabid fanbase. At this point I doubt I’ll ever read it.
I don’t have anything against it, per se, I just… opted out, I guess.

Let the Right One In is one of the year’s best movies, a minimalistic Swedish film, an excellent coming of age story and romantic tale that just happens to involve one of the main characters being a vampire.

The concept behind...
Brokeback was ridiculous and sounded like something would make up as a parody, but it was decent, too, I guess, though I’m anti-infidelity and any movie that sort of says “infidelity is okay if it’s for love” bothers me. So, who knows, maybe it’s okay, but the concept sounds ridiculous.

Yes! Let the Right One In is amazing
I just recently saw this movie. Apparently it’s only playing in art theatres right now, but theres a good DVD rip out on torrents and such hence how I watched it.
Anyways, it’s one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. It’s that simple. It’s a gem.
It’s just great.
I cant even describe why it’s so good..minimalistic describes it well. It’s also one of those extremely rare love stories done right in the movies.
It has a “twist” in the novel mind you, that I dont like at all. But I just pretend that doesnt exist lol.
It’s one of those movies thats so good I take note of the director so I can keep tabs on his future movies..
Heres a trailer, which doesnt really do it justice as it kind of portrays it as a slam bang thriller, which it isnt..

u really overrate lebron
and this is coming from someone who considers lebron to be slightly better
lebron is not a better shooter, he’s a better slasher but his main knock is his jumpshot
he’s a better rebounder and passer but he’s not a better defender. part of the reason bron is a better rebounder though is his position. not to mention his team is overreliant on him to do everything. im amazed at how his team competes year in and year out with that craptastic roster, part of it is the snails pace they play, they’re a boring team to watch

what stats matter? what you see with your obviously very trained eye?

For one thing
You have to put everything in context. Thus, while stats don’t “lie”, they don’t tell the whole story, and certainly not those stats.
It’s honestly like you telling me that BA/HR/RBI is the absolute measure of a baseball player.
There are a variety of concoctions that people have made to normalize basketball stats—many of them are on the pages you linked. Each has their flaws, but to suggest something silly like a higher FG % means somebody’s a better shooter is just laughable.
By that logic, Shaq is the greatest shooter of all time.
And if TRB is how you judge the best rebounder, then it’s as simple as putting Shawn Bradley on a team full of midgets.
You do have to watch the players occasionally, unfortunately, or at least use stats that attempt to normalize performance.

OKay
so, bascially you are saying Kobe is better than LBJ because you said so? There must be something else…
I know if you watch Lebron with the junk he plays with and see how he makes that team infinity better, that he should be considered one of the best players, if not the best in the game right now. The stats help show that he is the better all around player which in turn helps make his team that much better. Add that, with his superiority in clutch situations (i don’t care how he scores, as long as he scores), i think it’s pretty clear he’s the best player in the game and he certainly should have been the MVP last year….
Kobe is great, i’m not saying he isn’t, but he’s the 2nd best player in the game IMO.

In any case
Yes, I was blowing a bit of smoke. LeBron is stronger, a better rebounder, and probably a better half-court passer.
He’s not a better shooter, not a better defender, and certainly not more clutch than Kobe, though.

id say basketball
more then any other sport is one where you have to watch the games to get the players full effect on the game.
it’s what lets you know a player like zach randolph or stephon marbury suck in comparison to tim duncan and jason kidd

because despite their “Big 3”, they’re also comfortably soft and injury-prone.

I'm happy with the game.
The key is finishing. They never finish. Ever. Like never ever. And they may never learn how to, but if they do, they can hang with anybody. One thing I’d look into however is trading Howard. They look fine without him.
Fire Todd Dodge. Seriously. 45 given up in the 1st quarter. Wow. But still we're better than Washington! Oh and, SUCK IT WESTERN KENTUCKY! 1-10 baby!

Howard to ATL for Marvin Williams/Acie Law/Randolph Morris.
Probably not realistic but, neither is the idea that Howard will be traded so…..

They don’t. They look good against the worst teams in the league. When they play somebody good, they look really bad. There are only two people on this team who can shoot.

nobody will step up in the clutch like they can. If Mavs can build a good lead, I’m confident that elsewhere, they can hold it. (unless maybe its the Celtics or Cavs).

I guess
I just don’t see it. Kobe is, in many ways, better than Michael freakin’ Jordan. I just think he gets shit on because of Shaq and Denvergate.
When you’re talking the absolute best players of the last 25 years, you’ve got MJ, Magic, Bird and Kobe, with Shaq knocking on the door and Kareem only out because I include him in the generation before.
I think LeBron will definitely be a Hall of Famer, but I guess I see him as more Karl Malone than MJ (in terms of greatness, not playing style). We’ll see. Maybe I’m wrong.
by brettgardner on Nov 29, 2008 1:06 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
kobe is 6th at best
below shaq and duncan for sure along w/mj magic and bird. if we only go back 25 years he’s ahead of kareem but his career was winding down
i personally think lebron will finish (at least in my book) higher in terms of career then kobe. of course it’d be nice if he can get a better 2nd fiddle (mo williams is ok but anyone other then lebron and he’s not) but it will be interesting to see lebron when his athleticism starts to fade, it’d be great if he can develop an awesome post game and start playing more PF or combo pf/sf
as for kobe’s all time ranking on another site we’re doing a top 100 project he finished i think top 15 which is about right for now. dirk finished 41st behind steve nash and sidney moncrief which both pissed me off

Nash over Nowitzki?
Guess everyone’s overestimating what Nashy’s done playing D’Antoni and Nellie ball.
by jonthefon on Nov 29, 2008 1:24 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Below Duncan?
Oofa. Can’t agree with you at all there. As for Shaq…I don’t know. He had 11 seasons of utter dominance. Since then, he’s been good at best. Kobe, on the other hand, has only gotten more refined with age.
Part of the comparison is unfair, I think. After all, I judge “greatness” in part by how a player carries his team and wills them to win. That’s a lot harder for a big man who can’t handle the ball coming down the floor to do. Guys like Duncan and Shaq, while overpowering, have to be in their spots to win a game. Kobe, MJ, Bird and Magic can be anywhere.
In any case, I put Kobe 3rd on that list ahead of Magic. That’s right.
by brettgardner on Nov 29, 2008 1:27 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
jeez you're insane
over magic, wow i cant comprehend that, magic is my #3 of all time and prime shaq is probably a top 5 player ever too
you’re really overestimating kobe
and duncan can and has willed his team to victory, that 03 title team really didnt have much, a young ginobili and an aging on his last legs david robinson. stephen jackson was hish 2nd best player. duncan killed in the playoffs and took down the lakers. plus duncan has been the best defender of his generation
bball may be different today since it’s more guard dominated but give me the dominant big man every time and if im doing an all time draft im taking wilt #1, if i for some reason decide to go crazy and take a guard 1st im passing michael (crazy right!) and taking magic. love the mismatches

I think you’re underestimating him.

if i was i think more people would share your opinion that he is better then shaq or a duncan or a magic, facts are he’s not. plus he still needs to prove he can win w/o shaq, i think he will probably win at least 2 more titles but im still probabl not gonna change my stance on the duncan or shaq or magic thing
by studcrackers on Nov 29, 2008 1:41 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Ugh.
That whole “win without Shaq” thing is so ridiculous. Nobody talks about Shaq not winning without an All-Star guard. Fact is, most championship teams have really good players.
And I think many people would agree with me that Kobe is more valuable than Duncan. You can’t say that it’s a “fact” one way or the other. Just opinions.
by brettgardner on Nov 29, 2008 1:44 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs

b/c it’s probably true but for a career duncan has been more successful

More successful?
What do you mean?
by brettgardner on Nov 29, 2008 10:14 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
he's won 4 titles
and has been the best player on his team since his rookie season. he’s always been 1st or 2nd team all nba and all defense
he’s anchored the best defense in the league his entire career and is the best defender of his generation, it’s a crime he doenst have a DPOY. he makes bruce bowen look better then he really is
he also is always able to raise his game in the playoffs, really the man’s only shortcoming is ft shooting and that only plagues him from time to time
kobe has won 3 rings but could probably only argue his was 1b to shaq’s 1a in the 3rd title and he was the big reason they lost against detroit and that the lakers lost last year vs. boston where he shot 40% and the reason it didnt look worse was because one game where he shot 60%

Kobe is in the prime of his career.

You've got me thinking, that's for sure
I definitely tend to forget the greatness of Kobe, which is probably due to Shaq / Denvergate subconsciously. When he lost his Sprite ads …
That’s pretty much the only reason I watch the NBA though, is to see what people like Kobe can do. Sure, I’ll root for Dallas and follow general NBA ebbs and flows.
At any NBA game, somebody is going to bring it. It boggles my mind how consistently and easily NBA players score. Now you could cue defense jokes, but I think with the way roles have specialized, you’ve got people whose sole purpose for being paid is to stop somebody else, often specifically. 70 or 80 points is a bad night, with 100 being topped regularly.
You also make a great point about the spacing. Duncan and Shaq’s games are inherently predictable. Perhaps that makes them that much more dominant.
But when I see Yao turning and dunking on a 7’ athletic dude on Washington and follows it up with a beastly roar, that shit has to make you chuckle. I hate the Rockets, but I can sit there and watch Tracy McGrady drain 3 after 3 when he gets going. There’s just nothing like it.
