Maddox hired w/o face-to-face interview
He first spoke with club officials by phone Saturday and accepted the job without a face-to-face meeting.
Per the DMN..
Rangers hired Maddox w/o a face-to-face interview. Not knocking it.. just saying this definitely means it was Nolan's call.
Contract looks pretty good.. two years + option year.. a little over $50k/yr more than what MIL was gonna pay. It will be interesting to see if Wash is really the guy, or if he starts the season on the hot seat.

I don't care if they talked to him or not
If he gets results that is all that matters. It is kind of suprising though.

He must be one hell of an over-the-phone interviewer.
I don’t see the big deal over this. Seems like he was pretty obviously the guy they were targeting all along.

I'm not surprised
to see that level of money. I would have been shocked if he got the 3 years 4 million Adam mentioned earlier. Not that he wouldn’t necessarily have been worth it, I just couldn’t see going that far over the max assistant coach league when, most likely, you didn’t need to.

Do you think there's a third Maddux brother?
I bet there is. And I bet he, the third Gumbel brother and Cooper Manning all get together every winter on some island and express their life stories to one another through medium of interpretive dance. I bet it happens. Bet on it.

Yeah
Supposedly he was a badass wide receiver, but spinal stenosis cut his career short after high school.
As a big, lumbering white guy, It’s hard to imagine he could have been a superstar receiver, though.

So.
My interview was a conference call.
A lot of interviews are like that these days…

Something tells me
someone with the organization had some kind of contact with him prior to Saturday, and I’m not just talking about contact via his agent.

They probably didn't know who each other were
and just innocently discussed pitching philosophies and thoughts on the Rangers young starters.

On another Maddux related note, here's something else I found in a Brewers forum:
Maddux seemed to be good with players off the scrap heap who have bounced around or came in from a different organization. He didn’t have a lot of success though with the young guys who came up; whether that is an indication of the true talent of the players who came up or whether it is Maddux’s style that doesn’t work with rookies I don’t know. But I have heard third-hand that Maddux is difficult for young players to work with because he is always tinkering with them and changing their mechanics, even when they are warming up in the bullpen. So maybe with a new wave of young guys starting to arrive they might benefit from a different approach. I guess we’ll see.
Again, it’s not like I got this from a totally reputable source but it would be pretty depressing if this was true.

Gallardo was pretty butt nasty.
Who else did the Brewers really bring up during his tenure there?

Manny Parra, Carlos Villanueva.
Villanueva wasn’t a fantastic prospect but IIRC he was a C/C+ level guy according to Sickels.

And what has become of the young pitchers that Rick Peterson worked with in Oakland?

I consider
Parra and Villanueva to be successes frankly, considering what was thought of them as prospects and how they adjusted to the majors. Something tells me that the guys he’s talking about sucked. We’ll see though. Even before Holland & co. get there he’ll be working with McCarthy, Hurley, Harrison, Hunter, Feldman, Nippert, Mendoza and Rupe, all pretty unestablished.

Just thinking about it
Hendrickson was fairly highly touted, and he didn’t pan out. That’s about it. Sheets is great, as is Gallardo. They also got Doug Davis back on track, along with those relievers mentioned.

I agree with you on Parra and Villanueva
I was just trying to answer Dirk’s question there.

Found at Sickel's site
Greg Maddux will probably retire sez Boras. So, if he wants to dabble in coaching would we have an inside track on him? Maybe assign him to Spokane as a pc next June?
And here’s some video of Justin Smoak playing in the AFL. LINK
I toggled the HD off to make it play smoother on my slow-azz computer.

Why not
He is about as good as it gets as far as pitching mechanics are concerned and having him around would be great. Have Nolan give him a little pep talk, have his brother say some kind words about how he’s treated here, and have Hicks write a big fat check to seal the deal.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Greg Maddux will be spending a lot of time in the lower minors, whatever he decides to do. Did Orel spend any time in the minors?

Wash
is definitely on the hot seat. None of these coaches are his guys. If he starts poorly he is gone and I’m sure Jackie Moore will take over.

Atlanta Falcons
They hired Thomas Dimitroff without the benefit of a face-to-face. And so far I don’t think the Falcons or their fans are complaining.
They did conduct a webcam interview with him, however.
