pretty quick hour

I thought this was JN’s best show – his mood and energy seemed easier on the ears than normal. Jamey sounded pretty psyched up to talk Rangers for once. The show benefitted greatly from him biting off a larger chuck of air-time than normal.

Meno is normally waaay too wordy and monotone – this time was no different – but on top of that he lacked passion and his audio level was recorded so low I had to squint my ears sometimes to hear him. An unhinged Meno is an interesting Meno. Ted was Ted.

BTW, Beavan did indeed stay in extended for a few weeks making his CLN debut on April 29th – a 6-inning shutout performance.

by shroomer on Nov 4, 2008 12:39 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Beavan.

Yeah…what I meant was that he wasn’t held back in extended to pitch short-season ball, but instead assigned to a full-season club for his pro debut. I should’ve been clearer.

I assume your initial comment about my energy in past shows is a suggestion that it’s normally been too low (true?), but what about my mood was lacking before? Was I too grouchy? Not grouchy enough?

I ask not to challenge your observation — but to understand it. Sort of hard to know how you come across.

You just sounded

excited about the possibilities of the offseason instead of weary of how the big league team was doing, like all of us.

In past P-casts

you sounded tired and willing to let the others carry the burden of the energy and air-time. In my mind I always pictured you as having just got home from work, sitting at the kitchen table in your suit, tie loosened, one hand still clawed around the handle of your briefcase while you look distractedly out the sliding glass doors watching Max play with Erica’s dog in the backyard. Like you can’t wait for this to be over.

Hmm

I never got that impression from JN…I haven’t listened to this one yet, but I never thought Jamey was disinterested in the podcast.

But to your point...

I suppose I do tend to let others get more fired up about their position in things like this. It’s not disinterest as much as it is my nature, I guess.

very funny.

Thanks Jamey you got me intrested in the Rangers minor league system whe I found the Newberg Report several years ago. Since I’ve found several outlets for the minors and Ranger talk in general.

p.s. I was on a cruise a few years back and bumped into Nick Masset and his family, they had nothing but kind words for you. That is when I realized you not only know about these kids but get to know their families as well.

has been beaten to death but such a seminal moment in Hamilton’s career was when Blalock, Young, and Kinsler all showed up to his initial press conference. I know the team didnt win anything this year but the chemistry on the team is definitely something that does not need to be developed.

When Adam just spits out this is a losing org, that is just so gratifying.

This is truth. As fans, you have to own it. When you face down the bad news, the solutions start appearing, or you can at least understand free agents passing on Texas.

All in all it’s going to get better.

The main thing dominating this one is there’s no news.

These things are great though. They’re such a great compliment to participants’ written media.

A little off-topic

but I just saw this on rotoworld:

Nationals sent first baseman Dmitri Young outright to Triple-A Syracuse.

This kind of thing should happen more often, but it seems like teams are afraid of embarrassing their veteran players. There was absolutely no chance of Young and his $5 million salary being claimed off waivers, and the move frees up a 40-man roster spot for the winter. Young will still go to camp as a non-roster player, and the Nationals figure to carry him on Opening Day if he works hard and gets himself into shape.

Is this something we could do with someone like Frank Catalanatto to free up an extra spot on the 40 over the winter? He could still come to Spring Training as a non-roster invite? I had no idea that was possible.

The podcasts are great and I hope we get monthly

snippets throughout the off-season.

Jamey, you always sound like a broadcaster to me. My only criticism would be your reluctance to lob criticism at the organization when criticism is due. I listened to the podcast last night while I was reading other things so I don’t think it was covered but a great topic would have been Nolan’s decision to bring back both Wash & JD.

Adam, you sound like Gerry Fraley’s little brother who has a cold.

The podcasts are very appreciated and a great idea. We’re looking at FIVE more months until this season starts and these podcasts help the fans keep their hands warm thru the off-season.

Thanks to You

Just wanted to thank all of you again who sent questions in for the show and your continued support for the podcast. We will definitely do more of these Q&A’s during the off season while we “patiently” await pitchers and catchers in a few months.

Also, I like these threads because of the instant feedback we get on the shows content and our performance. It’s nice to know someone out there is actually listening to all this nonsense!

Two different answers.

I think he brought JD back because JD has done a spectacular job in the areas most important to getting us back to contention.

I think he brought Wash back because the team played hard for him, but he’s on a shorter leash.

by Jamey Newberg on Nov 5, 2008 12:11 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

What exactly did JD do after Nolan became his boss?

He drafted Smoak (who fell to him) and Ross and then he….

did what that constituted a “spectacular job”?

I hope Washington is on a short leash and as for this team playing hard for him, I saw a team cash in their chips come mid August (19-29 to close season).

Is it not possible in your mind

That Nolan is actually helped JD convince Hicks that building from within is the way to go? Not that Nolan came in and put poor little JD in his place?

JD had his nuts cut off

Amazingly, most of the dumb ass decisions (other than bringing back Washington & JD) this organization has made ended when Nolan was hired.

by Josey Wales on Nov 5, 2008 12:38 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

You have nothing to base that on

except for your own delusions.

Nolan could very well agree with JD’s desire to build from within. It may have been your other favorite whipping boy Hicks that was holding him back.

You just don’t know.

It was Nolan who

said that both JD & Washington were coming back.

Tom Hicks also said that he could guarantee John Danks would not have been traded if Nolan was here at the time.

That tells me that JD now needs to run all trades by Nolan before those trades can be made.

I have ripped Tom Hicks in the past

but I have also said hiring Nolan Ryan was the smartest thing he has done in 10 years.

Hiring Nolan in the first place and then throwing JD under the bus by saying John Danks would still be a Texas Ranger if Nolan was here when that trade was proposed tells me exactly what he thinks about his ability to make a trade and exactly why JD was castrated.

That they won’t trade 1st round pitchers ever again.

Hicks says a lot of dumb things

Sorry I was sidetracked, Jamey.

by shroomer on Nov 5, 2008 6:17 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I've tried really hard to think about what it

was that JD did under Nolan’s watch that was so spectacular.

Nothing was done in the first 1/3 of the season to help the major league team.

We started the season with 4 catchers that can play in The Show and ended the season that way yet our pitching staff (built by JD and JD alone) gave up 967 runs.

Nolan fired the pitching coaches (not sure if that was a positive or not) and we had more vets than rookies playing the meaningless games of September.

Sitting back to observe

would not necessarily include taking in all the prospects acquired in the last couple years, though. And none of what you mention here casts a dark shadow on the long term plan, which Ryan seems to have bought into.

2008 draft

one of the best in baseball, and Daniels signed Smoak, a steal of a pick, for a very good price and a minor league contract whereas a couple other teams spent more money and gave a ML contract to players ranked similarly or lower.

I think Ryan took a look at the prospects and liked what he saw. I also think he likes some of the people Daniels has brought on board in the front office and scouting, and what the org has done in Latin America. Despite the big black eye at the major league level during his tenure, the organization as a whole has a much stronger foundation than during Hart’s time.

I think Daniels has Ryan’s confidence, and I think that Ryan gained that confidence as he got to know the details of what’s been going on.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on Nov 5, 2008 11:55 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

C'mon tball...

didn’t Smoak fall into the Rangers lap?

Was this really some kind of a find by JD or was he the beneficiary of good fortune?

Besides being the beneficiary of good fortune on Draft Day, what the hell did JD do after February 1, 2008 that was so spectacular?

"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

by Josey Wales on Nov 6, 2008 12:04 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Beneficiary?

The Rangers did make other picks on draft day, and the draft is not viewed as one of the best this year just because of Smoak. And it was the signing of Smoak I referenced, but you glossed over my point about that, of course. And everything else I mentioned, too, since it doesn’t fit your narrative.

I still don’t understand why you’re fixated on Daniels after Ryan’s hiring now. But I shouldn’t be. You’re already preparing your stance that any success the big league club has in the next few years will be 100% credit to Ryan’s collaring of Daniels, or some such theory. No, it just can’t be possible that Daniels, after some early blunders, had grown into his job and Ryan respects what he’s doing. Nope, not possible.

It’s almost as if you’ve given up on saying Daniels is completely incompetent, so this is your new spiel. He hasn’t done anything since Ryan was hired, which must somehow prove that Ryan isn’t letting him do anything, right? You’re really straining here. The simplest explanation is that Ryan likes what Daniels is doing and that’s why he supports him.

Well, since

most of the moves made in prep for 2008 had already been made prior to Ryan’s hiring, what is it that you think he should have been doing? He didn’t make any deadline deals, which was probably a good thing if the return value was not there. Your strangely focused question is peculiar to say the least. Why would Ryan be evaluating Daniels solely on actual transactions made after he came on board? Surely you think more of Ryan than to think he’d be that limited in his eval.
