Cubs out of options with Hill?
Chicago Sun-Times reporting that Rich Hill's lost 2008 season killed his trade value. He'll be out of options next spring.
I would be in favor of overpaying the Cubs to acquire Hill. If we could find a match it would be a risk worth taking. Just part of the turn over every rock to improve the club scenario.
Bring in Hochevar, Hill and Nippert and see what Maddux can do with them.

Maybe we should
have a Winter Meetings thread that has all these rumors in one place?
just a thought…..
But, Hill is a guy I’d be interested — depends on the price though of course.

Hill
has continued to look ugly in winter ball. I have no idea what happened to him. I would say offer a year of Byrd for him, but we may actually be able to do better…

That actually sounds like a decent deal
Although I’d rather look into sending Byrd to Cincy for the Homer first…
Just say no to Scott Olsen.

Byrd
Byrd has more value in trade than Rich Hill right now
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

I'm not KOK, but
I would guess that the fact that Hill has actually put together a pretty good ML season (195 IP, 2.90 K/BB, 4.32 FIP in ’07) and Bailey has done nothing but get shelled at that level would have something to do with it.
Of course, Bailey’s also six years younger, has better raw stuff/upside, is under club control longer, is cheaper…

the preceding post was a great success.

So...
Our rotation would be Millwood, Padilla, Hochevar, Hill, and Nippert?
by Adam J. Morris on Nov 5, 2008 4:15 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
No
Our rotation is likely to be:
Millwood, Padilla, Harrison, Hurley and McCarthy.
So, I would start Hill and Nippert down in OKC (nice AAA rotation with Holland likely there). At the trade deadline unload Millwood and Padilla and bring the best two at OKC.
Feldman would be spot starter/long man.
Go Cubbies and Go Rangers!

Hill and Nippert
They are both out of options. How do you propose to get them to AAA? Particularly Nippert, who can become a free agent even if he cleared waivers.

Penny
How about we give Penny (only 30 and from Oklahoma) a one year, $7 million deal? He would then have the same amount as he would have made with the Dodgers, and can be flipped or resigned if he is proven healthy.

yikes I didnt know how bad penny was this year

Hill
Check his ’08 stats, including winter ball…
And then look at his 2007 season. He is the ultimate buy low candidate.
by clark on Nov 5, 2008 5:24 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Absolutely yes
Maybe we can sucker them into trading Hill for Marlon Byrd…hehe. There’s 99.9% chance they turn it down but it’s worth asking.
I’m a big believer in the buy low-sell high theory. Billy Beane has been doing it for ages. So I do think guys like Hill are worth taking a chance on. And why I wouldn’t be opposed to trading Teagarden for a top pitching prospect. Injury or no injury, he still hit .225 and slugged < 400 at AAA last year.

Maybe...
I though I was crazy when I thought of this but here it goes anyway.
Rich Hill for Teagarden
how about Hill for Salty?

Scratch that
Cubs don’t need a catcher.
by chrisR on Nov 5, 2008 6:54 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
what they do need
is a right handed hitting bat in the OF, preferably one who can play all 3 positions.

how did we go
from proposing teagarden for bucholz or bowden to rich hill. thats ridiculous. you were crazy when you thought of it. and youre still crazy now for thinking its a good idea. jeezus christo.

Hill...
I just don’t think he’s an upgrade over the 8 or 9 guys the Rangers already have that will battle for a spot in the rotation.
