OT: Michael Crichton
This will probably cause some arguements because of some of his beliefs regarding global warming but I thought I would post this story. Michael Crichton has died at the age of 66 from a "short" battle with cancer. Not sure how long "short" is suppose to be but he was apparently keeping it private. Really enjoyed his books but, unfortunately, they were all turned into horrible movies, in my humble opinion.

I've read a lot of his books
and I am amazed at the phenomenal number of subjects he wrote about so well.
He’ll be missed.

That really sucks.
I was a big fan, even if his last couple of books did make go a big rubbery one.
Jurassic Park is one of my all-time favorite books.
His travels book was pretty damn good, too.
I’ll miss the freakishly tall bastard.

State of Fear
Though I don’t necessarily agree with him on this subject I really enjoyed this book. His arguements were clear and sensible. They provided his arguements without being too condescending. As mentioned, I will miss his style of writing and the different subjects that he provided so much clarification (though usually one-sided) on.

Eaters of the Dead
That was one of my favorites from him.

OK movie too
I’m not talking Oscar-caliber stuff, but a billion times better than Congo. Congo was a decent book and one of the worst movies.
Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

Congo
Absolutely loved Congo. Granted I was about 12 or 13 when I last read it but I could read it over and over without it losing the suspense. Agree about the movie, though. Horrible movie.

Its sad
Back when he was young he was a molecular biologist at the institute I work at now. I’m certain that experience helped lead him to write Andromeda Strain soon thereafter – one of my favorite sci-fi books. Very smart guy and very entertaining author.

Wow... I can't believe it
I had no clue he was even sick.
When I was 10 or so, Crichton was the writer who got me out of reading the Redwall/Goosebumps/Animorphs/kid phase of books and into real novels. Even now although I don’t think I’d consider him my favorite auther he is the only author that I have to get their newest book right when they come out.
Out of everything he wrote Timeline and Sphere were probably my two favorites, but I enjoyed all of his novels.
RIP

That's crazy
Crichton was my transition from kid books, too…. all bc of Jurassic Park. Sphere was next, then Andromeda, Eaters, and I was hooked.
What a bummer
RIP
At this rate, he’ll be throwing 107-110 by 2012

wow
I used to look at him as an idol. So accomplished across two fields.
And, just to clear something up, his views on global warming weren’t all that controversial. Maybe the extreme left think so, but otherwise he just called for a measured response to a much more complicated problem that got too simplified in the media. For instance, he didn’t deny global warming, he just had problems with pegging it as man made and thinking that reversing human trends would magically solve the problem.
that nuance, he brought to pretty much any field he wrote about. truly brilliant guy.

i did a research paper
on rising sun in high school. my teacher hated it. and was pissed. the assignment said, “literature” but she assumed “classic”. to me rising sun was a classic and literature. whatever. i wrote a brilliant paper on japanese business practices.
i did another paper on The Pit and the Pendulum. she hated that too because it was a short story and not a book. whatever. bet i was her 1st student to study spanish capital punishment from the inquisition to the present.

I've always been annoyed
at how certain people have tried to demonize him for his global warming views. It is a complex issue, and when people on either side allow politics to affect their interpretation of the issue it muddies the water and you don’t get proper dialogue about how to address the problem.

Its not even funny.

I love them both, personally.
It’s one of the very few instances where I loved the book and then when the movie came out I loved it too.

A favorite when I was in high school
After reading Jurassic Park I read just about every work of fiction Michael Crichton had written to that point.
Andromeda Strain
Sphere
Terminal Man
Congo
Rising Sun
Disclusure
The Great Train Robbery
I read these all in a very short period of time and enjoyed them all. Later on I read The Lost World and wasn’t as impressed (the move was horrible). I was even less impressed with Airframe and Timeline. They seemed like screenplays that had half-heartedly been turned in to books. I haven’t read anything since Timeline.
Crichton was a pretty amazing guy. Along with being a novelist and a medical student he directed a number of movies including the adaptation of his book The Great Train Robbery. He also directed a favorite of mine, Westworld.

I just finished reading Timeline
it was kind of corny, and not up to his usual quality. But I enjoyed it nonetheless. I had trouble getting worked up about Airframe.

I read Sphere
in 5th grade during “mandatory reading time” no joke. I was hooked. Of course I had to go back and read it again later cuz I didn’t understand some of it, but I loved it.
Timeline is probably my favorite of his though.

Which I still watch for some reason. I guess I just have to finish it out even though it’s not what it used to be.

Seems like forever. Is there anyone left from the original?

It's been on since 1994 I think
As far as I can tell the only original people left are a couple of the nurses who have always had very small parts. A couple of weeks ago Maura Tierney left and when she did they showed this closet that had the name tags of all of the folks who had left over the years hung on a wall.
