Are there too many catchers on the market?
Kelly Shoppach may be on the block, and Cleveland might target Masterson...
Are the Indians a better team with Kelly Shoppach catching and Victor Martinez playing first base or are they better if they trade Shoppach to fill a need and keep Martinez behind the plate?
The Indians feel they have enough depth if they have to trade a catcher for an infielder or closer. They have Chris Giminez, Wyatt Toregas and Carlos Santana, the man who has done nothing but hit since being acquired from the Dodgers for Casey Blake, behind Martinez and Shoppach.
Arizona may have to put Miguel Montero on the market as well
With a depleted farm system at the upper levels and little in the way of both attractive and available major-league pieces, the trade market might not be as navigable for Byrnes as in past years, at least not for the most attractive of commodities, such as Atlanta second baseman Kelly Johnson.* * *
If they do make a deal, their most appealing trade chip likely is catcher Miguel Montero, whom some clubs might view as an everyday player but whose time has been limited due to the emergence of Chris Snyder.
Dodgers GM Ned Colletti recently denied rumors than that Russel Martin was on the market.
Plus guys like Ramon Hernadez and Jeff Clement may also be on the move (I can't find the links). Also, there are always short-term free agent options.
We may have the most catching to offer, but we hardly have the market cornered. If some of these catchers are really up for trade, this may turn into a buyers market. Worth keeping an eye on...

It doesn't matter
The rangers have the best catchers available when you combine age + talent level. Not only are they the best available but 3 of the 4 are young so whoever trades for them can say they have locked up their catching position for the next 5 years at least.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Well, I'd expect the addition of Shoppach and Montero to the market might decrease Laird's value a bit
Which is extremely bad news if you want to get rid of him like me.
But the good news is, Shoppach and Montero being out there shouldn’t do anything to the value of Tea/Salty/Max, as bigsteve just alluded to.
Just say no to Scott Olsen.

Actually, I think
that the demand for catchers is not that high.

this is why you don't trade for 2 catchers and then have 4
and this is why you don’t draft another firstbaseman or just simply another hitter
