Peavy trade update

Kevin Towers has apparently cut the list of possible Peavy trade destinations to three -- the Cubs, the Braves, and the Dodgers.

Towers says he expects this to be resolved within the week.

I have to think that, at the end of the day, the Braves will be the team that ends up with Peavy.  I think Towers playing chicken over Tommy Hanson, but at the end of the day, will accept Jordan Schafer, Yunel Escobar, and a non-Hanson pitching prospect or two.

The question then, I think, is what they are going to do with Adrian Gonzalez, given that they have a first base prospect knocking on the door, and given that, with the team seemingly going into strip-down-and-rebuild-mode, Gonzalez is the next significant veteran trading chip they could use to restock the farm.

Phew, glad to see that the Angels aren’t in this group. I don’t think it would have been a good thing overall for them to get Peavy, given what they probably would have given.

On that topic, how in the world would the Cubs be able to make it worth SD’s while? I can’t imagine what Towers wants from them. I think it would be interesting to see whether the Braves would give Escobar. I think it is much more doubtful than suggested here. He is their franchise SS, and they really, really like him and have absolutely zero options to replace him. They have enough talent, imo, that they can make it worth SD’s while without either Escobar or Hanson more than the Dodgers or certainly the Cubs could.

If ATL didn't include Escobar or Hanson

What would the package be?

Kelly Johnson, Schafer and Teheran? Maybe Gorkys too?

by LiamP on Nov 8, 2008 8:01 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

something like that. I think that Atlanta values Escobar quite highly, and I wouldn’t be shocked if it came right down to it that they’d keep him instead of even a Heyward. He’s a critical player. Kelly Johnson isn’t so much, so I don’t know how SD views him, but every one of those players is more valuable than anyone the Cubs are supposedly offering. The Dodgers really don’t have much either, unless they’re willing to talk about pretty important MLB players (and maybe they are). LA is also in-division, which seems like it would suck a little for SD.

Teheran is obviously a very intriguing guy, along the lines of our breakout guys from this year, and Rohrbaugh and Delgado aren’t chopped liver. And that doesn’t even get you to Freeman/Flowers. They have a lot to offer.

by Brett Perryman on Nov 8, 2008 9:45 PM CST up reply actions

I think Wren has already made it clear that Heyward is untouchable.

I’d be shocked if they dealt him. I mean, he’s got the potential to be so freaking good.

I imagine they’re trying to figure out a way to do the deal without Escobar/Hanson/Heyward being in it, but I really doubt SD does it without one of those 3.

by LiamP on Nov 8, 2008 10:32 PM CST up reply actions

Unless something else arises, SD would have to take an inferior deal to pass up what the Braves could offer even aside from those guys.

And they’ve made the same sort of comments about Escobar that they have Heyward.

by Brett Perryman on Nov 8, 2008 10:42 PM CST up reply actions

I didn't realize they said that about Escobar.

I thought it was just Hanson and Heyward that they said that about. My mistake.

by LiamP on Nov 8, 2008 11:18 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think he's said it just recently or in response to this deal

but it’s been their policy consistently with Escobar. Peavy is a big deal, and sometimes you trade guys you really don’t want to, so I’m not confident that they wouldn’t include him. I think it’s very similar to the Rangers dealing Kinsler. They really, really don’t want to deal Escobar.

by Brett Perryman on Nov 8, 2008 11:25 PM CST up reply actions

What type of offer from the Dodgers?

You’d think they’d have to include something like Kemp + one of their hot young pitchers (Billingsley, Kershaw) for them to trade within division. While I don’t care much for the Padres, they’re my “home team” and I wouldn’t mind see them get some exciting players like them.

Agree about the Cubs – I can’t imagine anything they have being worth a trade.

by JBImaknee on Nov 8, 2008 10:20 PM CST up reply actions

Well they’re obviously not going to deal Kemp plus one of those two for Peavy, so SD is either using them as a pawn against Atlanta or would take something less. I do think that they overrate Kemp though.

For what it's worth

I haven’t followed this very closely in the last few days, but the names that are being thrown out in the columns I’m sing out there from the Cubs even compare with (any of) the names from the Braves. Something doesn’t add up.

i saw the list that was floated out there and was thinking there is no way thats accurate. t

I saw that...

…and was mentally preparing my comments for tomorrow morning’s news roundup post.

In particular…why on earth would you put Murphy or Cruz at DH, and Manny in LF?

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 8, 2008 8:11 PM CST up reply actions

Gangsta factor

Manny and his dreads would look cool standing there in left, whereas Murphy or Cruz would just look like normal baseball players.

And who wants normal baseball players?

Not true

Murphy has the Greer look while Cruz has a rockin’ beard.

Good point

If Cruz comes to ST with that epic goatee of his intact, I propose we start calling him “The Pharaoh”.

Murphy doesn't look like Rusty Greer.

He looks like some kooky old billionare called up a mad scientist and said, “I want a 15/16th’s size version of Kam Loe who can play the OF!”

its not in the physical appearance

but in the grittiness of every step he takes.

On a side note, I stopped seeing Murphy as mini-Kam Loe when I saw Murphy without his hat. I always just pictured him completely bald like Loe and then saw that he actually has a full head of brown hair. My mind was blown.

ManRam

If we signed him as a DH would that be a bad thing?

His bat would be a monster in this lineup. Don’t worry about playing him in the field. If he is “injured” and only plays 130 games or so thats fine. He would be better than MB was in this lineup.

I know it won’t happen for many reasons but if it did it would be a great addition to the lineup.

damn, Peavy for that??

You know SD is upset Texas is not in this…we probably could get him rather easily looking at what these teams could/would give up.

why bring up the AG situation?

Are you implying that their possible logjam could affect the one we might have (Davis/Smoak) in respect to the trade market?

I don’t know if what I just wrote makes sense.

Cubs

I can’t see how the Cubs are in on this unless they plan to pull off a three way deal. Maybe sign Dempster and the tarde Marquis for prospects to send to SD in return for Peavy.

Signature! I don't need no stinking signature!!
